Paul Ryan Shaved an Hour Off His Marathon Time in a Radio Interview
Paul Ryan likes to keep fit. He hopes you can tell. *wink* So it is only natural that he would be an awesome marathon runner. So awesome that in a recent radio interview he claimed to have run a marathon in under 3 hours. Via Runner’s World:
“Yeah, I hurt a disc in my back, so I don’t run marathons anymore. I just run ten miles or less.” When Hewitt asked Ryan what his personal best is, Ryan replied, “Under three, high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something.”
Being a running magazine, Runner’s World went about verifying the claim. Cue the sad trombone.
It turns out Paul Ryan has not run a marathon in less than three hours—or even less than four hours.
A spokesman confirmed late Friday that the Republican vice presidential candidate has run one marathon. That was the 1990 Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota, where Ryan, then 20, is listed as having finished in 4 hours, 1 minute, and 25 seconds.
His camp claims it was an easy mistake.
“The race was more than 20 years ago, but my brother Tobin—who ran Boston last year—reminds me that he is the owner of the fastest marathon in the family and has never himself ran a sub-three. If I were to do any rounding, it would certainly be to four hours, not three. He gave me a good ribbing over this at dinner tonight.”
Oh ho! A good ribbing! Seriously though, the Ryan brothers turn into Tommy Flanagan when they talk about sports.

This is a post…because?

Yes, this is real important stuff. Much more important than asking how Obama got into Columbia or what his grades were while there. Or asking where the Fast & Furious communications between Holder and Obama are. I love the desperation of the libs right now. It’s all just falling apart.
September 1st, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Pssh, that’s nothing. Obama’s first pitch, bowling scores, bicycle riding, and golf swing alone are enough to keep me from voting for him. It’s embarrassing.

Suppose because this rape is a “method of conception” villainous cunt’s marathon exaggeration is more newsworthy than his budget which would raise the deficit $4.6 trillion over a decade.

September 1st, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Hahahahahahaha. Yes, go on deceiving yourself.
September 1st, 2012 at 10:56 AM
No but that doesn’t stop Paul Ryan from telling people that at campaign rallies…just remember, it’s not a lie if you believe it

The first Fast & Furious is still my favorite. Not sure who the hell Holder is, but what fast and furious was he(she?) discuss with the president?

You’ve got politics in my sports. One time thing, right?
September 1st, 2012 at 11:02 AM
I have no love for the Democrats but why lie about something so inconsequential? Full disclosure, I wanted Christie or Rubio, but I think Ryan was a bad pick. He voted for a lot of deficit increasing legislation during G.Dubs presidency, so for him to turn around and be a deficit hawk is like some girl tearing through 76 dudes and then turn into a born again virgin. Mitt could have done a lot better than picking a Wisconsin personal trainer as his VP.

Much more important than asking how Obama got into Columbia or what his grades were while there
You’re not familiar with FERPA, are you?
September 1st, 2012 at 12:50 PM
but you can look back through its history and conversations always go on tangents. especially in election years. come back in 2013.
September 1st, 2012 at 12:53 PM
For those not in the know, FERPA is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. Basically put, no one other than the student can access their records at a college unless specifically given permission by the student. Demanding Obama’s records at Columbia is no more relevant or legitimate than Democrats demanding that Romney release his tax returns.

the demand may not be relevant, but of the two types of info, romney’s is more important to the electorate, or oughta be. unless obama has lied about his columbia grades, cuz lying’s bad, mmmkay?
September 1st, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Why is it important that we know if Romney is exploiting loopholes in the tax code? It hasn’t been overhauled since Reagan was president, he’d be an idiot not to exploit the loopholes. It’s not illegal.
There is a difference though, you’re right. There is evidence, perhaps circumstantial at best, that Romney has exploited tax havens and paid less than he otherwise would have. I’ve yet to see any evidence other than wild-eyed assertions by a bloodspitting fringe that Obama was anything but a normal student at Columbia. It’s trolling for negatives because they simply don’t like the guy. Why they don’t like him I’ll let others explore.

um, i did say ‘to the electorate’. i agree for the most part that if a rule is badly made, it’s not wrong to exploit it. but taxes are touchy and appeal to mouthbreathers who read headlines only and are happy to be told how to think by their favorite anchors

You’re right vez. I agree.

a great reason to release the returns, to prove the circumstantial evidence wrong. it’s like when those accused of taking steroids deny it but don’t sue accusers for defamation

Maybe if you ran sub 6 and though it was sub 5. A sub 3 hour marathon is something very very few people can do, and I don’t see how you can make that mistake. It would be like saying “oh I shoot sub 80 when I golf” but you actually have never broken 90. You can’t really do that on accident.
September 1st, 2012 at 1:18 PM

I don’t think it’s the same thing. If Romney has exploited tax shelters, it may be somewhat unethical, but it’s not wrong. And in a lot of ways it makes good sense in terms of business and personal finance. We don’t look askance at corporations that have their corporate ‘headquarters’ in Delaware after all. Steroids can have a profound effect on a player’s ability to execute their occupation. If Romney used tax shelters and loopholes, it reflects little upon his ability to be president. In fact I would argue that it demonstrates an understanding of the tax code which only helps his credentials. It’s an odd argument to make I know, but it’s all by way of saying that I don’t think it’s the same thing as an athlete who takes steroids.
September 1st, 2012 at 1:22 PM
my parallel was to erase all doubt by releasing them. whether he broke the law or not, refusing to release them looks bad, and as you know that’s all much of the public needs to make a choice and/or to whip up the spin machine
September 1st, 2012 at 1:23 PM
Fuck things that matter…. he lied about his marathon time. We need MORE OUTRAGE
September 1st, 2012 at 1:24 PM
i like this…lets see some of the golf scores in washington. i smell a lot of vanity handicaps…
September 1st, 2012 at 1:25 PM
oops, that was unclear. romney releases returns to prove all was fine, to satisfy image-conscious electorate = athlete denying steroid accusations putting his money where his mouth is by going after the accusers in a meaningful way
actions not words, bottom line

spence, you a kansas fan? the band not the rockchalks
one of my favorite albums is two for the show. live album. only like three songs that were radio hits, the rest i never heard until this album, so i guess the studio versions would bore me. but this album is amazing

I’m okay with voting for whoever can play the closest to their handicaps at Congressional. I could talk myself simply into voting for an honest politician* rather than by party.
*except Santorum, who seems both honest and insane when I’ve heard him

By comparison, the fastest time to qualify for Boston Marathon is 3:05 right now. And I think 2:50 or 2:55 gets you guaranteed entry to NYC.
September 1st, 2012 at 2:20 PM
yea man…kansas is awesome. great prog band.

You’re obviously not familiar with FMRPA.
For those not in the know, FMRPA is the Family Marathoner Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.
Fuck politic. All these ass holes have completely fucked up our ffederral government with legislation that’s way too far-reaching and intrusive. I say cut EVERY SINGLE DEPT budget by 25% and let’s see what happens.
They’re all jackasses.

someone is establishing a pattern! I’m sure one of the loyalist is going to provide a fact checker of a fact checker of a fact checker to prove that Ryan actually ran a sub 2 hour marathon. He’s just to humble to bring it up himself.
