College Football: Miami at Boston College “Highlights” a Bleak Afternoon Slate
Miami at Boston College: Frank Spaziani is on the hot seat at BC, after a disappointing 4-8 season last year. Boston College has 19 returning starters, tied for fourth most in FBS. Though one of the departures, Luke Kuechly, should be a major one. Perhaps continuity will improve the nation’s 108th ranked offense? The Hurricanes are in a bit of a pickle as well. The Nevin Shapiro scandal derailed what was supposed to be a well-stocked team last year. The team looks to be much leaner this season, and not in a good way.
Al Golden Sweat Level: Manageable. Some opening day jitters, but it should be around 72 degrees at kickoff in Boston. Hopefully, he has found some time to avail himself of a dry cleaner and a proper tailor. Costco fabrics don’t breathe well.
Southern Miss at Nebraska: Southern Miss lost half its starters from last year’s team and is changing schemes with head coach Larry Fedora departing for North Carolina. Nebraska was No. 18 in our preseason Top 25. Watch this one to gauge how Taylor Martinez has improved and whether Nebraska can win without grinding Rex Burkhead down to a nub.

“Bleak”? It’s fucking college football and we’ve been without it for months. Let’s be appreciative of what we’ve got here.

Going to be a rough 10+ years for Penn State. The amount of attrition after this year will be brutal.

You saying a loss at home to OU isn’t a good way to start a recruiting pitch?
September 1st, 2012 at 3:54 PM
is this where we talk about how bad Penn State is going to be this season?

Navy looked terrible against the Irish. Can we give Penn State that win? Can you say Temple, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana are locks?

Yeah. Its College Football Saturday. Rejoice.

Temple rushed for 300 yards Friday.
/All I got.
//Would never have cared if it wasn’t for Lisk’s fantasy team football thing.

spencer, why will Ohio State be bad in year 2 under Urban?
September 1st, 2012 at 4:06 PM
He said that Penn State is likely to be as bad next year as Ohio State will be good.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:08 PM
C’mon, I don’t think PSU will go 0-12 next year.

Gators trail … Bowling Green? 7-0
September 1st, 2012 at 4:08 PM
im saying they’re going to be unreal in year 2…and penn state will be as putrid this season as osu will be gangbusters in 2013.
osu played like shit for half their snaps on both sides but i haven’t seen them this explosive since the mid-90′s.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:09 PM
since the mid-90′s…when i was like 10. so what the fuck do i know?
September 1st, 2012 at 4:11 PM
ah, got it.
Penn State was nearly unwatchable. McGloin is bad. no skill anywhere.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:17 PM
You’re being harsh Jason. The guy was playing his first game in a new offense while missing his best players from last year. Let’s wait a few games before judging. And I reiterate that he was good in the first couple of drives. It’s been 1 game out of 12. Let’s all stow the conclusions before we are more than 8% of the way through the season.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:21 PM
yes, lots of change at Penn State, no question. But they were playing a MAC team and didn’t have enough skill players to do anything. What’s going to happen in conf play?
as for “good the first couple drives” … that might means things are WORSE. Ohio made adjustments after the first couple drives, then PSU did nothing. if this were a chess game, Ohio had no queen and just beat Penn State with a bunch of pawns and bishops.
The good B10 teams have far more talent.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Penn State is supposed to be one the cream of the crop B10 teams and they just lost to a MAC team at home. It’s fair to jump to conclusions at this point that they are in trouble.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:27 PM
Glad to see OSU isn’t the only B1G team to start off their game like shit.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:29 PM
It would be worse if Penn State had played a bad MAC team..
Just got home from a 7 hour round trip. Missed the Syracuse game. Just saw the score..what a game..Nassib had 44 completions for over 400 yards and Northwestern still beat the Orange by a point. 3 damn turnovers and a missed FG for Cuse. Ugh..
September 1st, 2012 at 4:31 PM
I agree that Penn State is not as good as they once were. When the NCAA authorizes an evisceration of your team and you lose almost everyone who scored a TD last season, that’s bound to happen. They got unlucky today and that’s why they lost. I do think that long term, whether under Bill O’Brien or another coach, that Penn State will be fine. But 5-7 wins this year seems likely.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Oh and I dig the chess analogy.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Penn State was dominating until that ridiculous tip TD, then all the energy went away and they just went flat. Lots of young players, couple of injuries to guys at positions with no depth. Whatever, still watching football and drinking.

Liquor gets it.
September 1st, 2012 at 4:36 PM
MAC looking good today. Kids got heart. Was a damn shame to see those PSU fans both those MAC players.
let’s hope not.

Illinois is not a lock.
September 1st, 2012 at 5:02 PM
Heck PSU had trouble against Temple last year, right?
