College Football Top 25: LSU Tigers, No. 3
Louisiana State Tigers [2011: 13-1 (9-0), lost BCS Title Game 21-0 to Alabama]
Four-Year Trend: 2008: (8-5), 2009 (9-4), 2010 (11-2), 2011 (13-1)
Notable Player: Sam Montgomery. The redshirt junior defensive end is the standout on LSU’s deep and talented defensive line. He led the Tigers with nine sacks last year and was a FWAA first-team All-American. He should be dominant again in 2012. Expect to hear much about his “motor,” “athleticism,” and “active hands” next April.
Top Newcomers: Kwon Alexander (LB), Travin Dural (WR), Corey Thompson (S), Vadal Alexander (G), Jerald Hawkins (OT)
Hurricane Prep: Les Miles’ word of the day was “reconcile” as the Tigers rode out Hurricane Isaac. Players “reconciled where they’re at” and coaches “reconciled” with canceling practice on Wednesday. LSU’s opener against North Texas at 7pm ET on Saturday should proceed as scheduled.
Honey Badger: Tyrann Mathieu. He should have given more of a shit. Last year’s Heisman finalist cornerback was booted from the team this fall and has entered a drug rehab facility in Houston. LSU will miss his playmaking ability on defense and special teams, but should not miss him much on a play to play basis. The Honey Badger was not that great in man to man coverage.
Why We Like Them: Defense and Special Teams. LSU’s offense may be pedestrian, but the Tigers engender points by controlling field position. Punter Brad Wing routinely pins opponents inside the 10-yard-line. John Chavis’ marauding defense takes it from there, halting movement and forcing mistakes. The Tigers were second to Alabama in yards per play defense last season. That defense was young, raw playing a number of underclassmen. Despite some talented personnel losses, this year’s unit could be even better.
Why We’re Concerned: Offense. The Tigers’ were 50th in yards per play offense last season. This was sufficient for every opponent, except Alabama. LSU returns four starters on the line and tremendous tailback depth. They have athleticism at wide receiver. It all depends on the quarterback. Former Georgia player and JUCO All-American Zach Mettenberger is not flawless, but he has a big arm that could make the Tigers far more dynamic in the passing game. Whether a Les Miles offense can make the most of it, is another matter.
Circle This Game: Alabama at LSU [Nov. 3] The third “Game of the Century” in two years. Both could enter this matchup undefeated. It would decide the SEC West, the SEC and which one would reach the BCS Title Game. The Tigers will seek revenge after last season’s embarrassing title game shutout.
Best-Case Scenario: LSU’s defense is magnificent. Mettenberger leads an offense close to the sum of its talented parts. The Tigers beat Alabama at home, win the SEC and are fortunate enough not to face the Tide again for a BCS Title.
Worst-Case Scenario: The defense gives the Tigers a high floor, as does a much weaker non-conference schedule. The defense is not quite as sharp after losing Claibourne and Brockers. The offense is a work in progress that does not progress. Les Miles can’t find the usual rabbits in its hat. LSU drops games to Alabama, Arkansas and another conference opponent to finish out 9-3.
Projected Bowl: Sugar

I was in NO last week and I swear that if you spotted an LSU hat, it was almost certain that they would also be wearing an LSU shorts or T-shirt.

Honest to God think that’s the first picture I’ve ever seen of Les without a hat. Good find.

I know this game is in primetime. I hope it’s not at the same time as USC/Oregon.

Tonight I can move from bemoaning the exploitation of college players to actively enjoying the exploitation of college players.

It’s the high white socks. Makes the whole uniform look stupid.

Is that right?

Bama’s schedule looks a lot tougher than LSU’s this year. @ LSU, @ Arkansas, @ Mizzou, Michigan in Dallas. LSU gets S. Carolina and Washington but they’re home games. Aside from Arkansas all their toughies are at home. Unlike last year they get 8 home games instead of 6.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
May be a 3:30 EST CBS kick.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Nope. That looks like Kansas State’s 4 year trend. Should be 8-5, 9-4, 11-2, 13-1.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
I know LSU is talented, but I just don’t see it this year. With Mathieu gone, they’ve lost almost every playmaker from their team last year. A team that 100% counted on big plays being made.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
CBS already announced this would be their 1 SEC primetime game this year. If ABC/ESPN is smart they’ll put USC/Oregon at 3:30 EST.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
I don’t think so.

This was part of their MO last year for sure. But they also wore teams down in the running game (ex. the 2nd half of the UT game last year). If they can get anything out of the passing game they have a shot. To be honest ever since the calendar struck 2012 it seems like there’s been a cloud over the program…but that all changes if Mettenberger is a legit starting QB, something they havent had since Flynn.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
True, wearing teams down will work against teams like my pathetic Vols last year, but not against better teams. Jefferson wasn’t great, but he was a good fit for that team up until the 2nd game against Bama, when they just got owned (to be fair they should have lost the first matchup also). I just think big plays, whether it was Jefferson, Mathieu, Clayborne, or Randle were so important to that team last year, and their biggest playmakers for the most part are all gone.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
My main point being: I think they’ll be a good team, no doubt. But not a top 3 team. I’d say more top 10 ish.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
If Little Rape can produce any semblance of a steady passing game, LSU will run the table and meet up with USC in the NC game.
This team is looking better than last season’s, and only that abortion against Bammer blocked it from one of the best college seasons ever.

My main point being: I think they’ll be a good team, no doubt. But not a top 3 team. I’d say more top 10 ish.You could argue the same about Bama though who lost Richardson, both starting WR’s, Hightower, Upshaw, Barron, Kirkpatrick, Menzie, Chapman, etc. Randle is a loss as are the two starting CB’s. Brockers wont be missed b/c the D-line is so deep. None of the LB’s will be missed. It really comes down to Mettenberger.

Just as long as they don’t announce a time, then move it two weeks before the game. I had to miss half of a Dwight Yoakam concert last season because the time moved from afternoon to evening. And I like Dwight.

fixed for excitement!
August 30th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
The first matchup they rattled McCarron and surprised Bama with the option. The 2nd matchup Bama adjusted and LSU had no counterpunch. They tried to run a high-school offense against an all-time great college defense.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Yep, I agree. Bama has a ton of question marks also. The main difference is Bama has had some insane recruiting classes the last couple of years. Sure, LSU’s are nothing to laugh at, but Bama’s have been historically silly. Also, quite simply, I think Saban is a big difference maker.

“I’m not Erin, I never will be, and I’m not going to pretend to be.”
Thank you for that, non-attention ninny.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
They were good, but if Bama had a field goal kicker, they lose the first matchup pretty handily. They were good, but Bama was better almost across the board, and it showed in the NC game.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
This, and this. The Evil One is simplay a better coach. He also knows how to make use of the quarterback in the modern football schematic.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:49 PM

I’m an SEC guy but I’d watch the USC/Oregon game.

LSU got pretty far running Michigan’s 1975 offense last year. We’ll see if they actually open it up. Their offenses in 2006 and 2007 were pretty legit (2 different OC’s and QB’s) so i’m hoping that it was more the QB’s than Miles.
