Three QBs in College Football Who Could Have a Blaine Gabbert, Ryan Tannehill or Robert Griffin III-Type NFL Draft Rise in 2012
Eight months before the 2011 NFL Draft, Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert wasn’t considered 1st round material. Among the talking head pundits who opine on the draft all year – Mel Kiper, Todd McShay, Mike Mayock, to name a few – none had Gabbert going the first round. We chronicled Gabbert’s meteoric rise in this post. Gabbert went 10th overall.
The same thing happened to Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill and Baylor QB Robert Griffin. Tannehill played receiver as a sophomore with the Aggies; Griffin battled accuracy issues as a freshman and tore an ACL as a sophomore, leading draft “gurus” to speculate maybe he’d play receiver in the NFL. Before last season began, neither was considered a 1st round pick. We talked about that a bit here. Griffin went 2nd; Tannehill 7th.
Looking ahead to the 2013 draft – who might fall into the Gabbert/Tannehill/RG3 category?
Everybody already knows USC QB Matt Barkley is a 1st round lock. And Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson will go in the 1st round. And Oklahoma’s Landry Jones might be a 1st rounder. So eliminating that trio – plus guys with major upside like Logan Thomas of Virginia Tech, Geno Smith of WVU and Tyler Bray of Tennessee (yes, we loved Bray earlier this year in our 2013 mock draft) – which lesser-known QBs could play their way into the 1st round?
Zach Mettenberger, LSU, redshirt junior. He’s thrown 11 passes in college, and he was kicked off the team at Georgia after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor counts of battery. He was highly recruited, has a cannon arm, and stands 6-foot-5. He’s got two receivers who likely will play in the NFL in Odell Beckham Jr. and Russell Shepard. LSU might have the deepest RB group in the country. Mettenberger is considered by some as a Top 50 player in the 2013 draft, but while everyone’s heavily scrutinizing Barkley and Wilson and Jones, don’t be surprised to see Mettenberger sneak into the first round, and maybe even the top half of it, based on potential.
Casey Pachall, TCU, redshirt junior. Admitted to dabbling in drugs. Was only the 241st rated QB coming out of high school. Was Andy Dalton’s backup. In a pass-happy system, Pachall has his three top receivers from 2011 returning (Boyce, Dawson, Carter). Pachall will get plenty of chances to shine in big spots late in the season – TCU travels to Morgantown and Austin, and hosts Oklahoma in November and December.
Collin Klein, Kansas State, redshirt senior. Maybe the toughest QB in the country. He’s Tim Tebow playing in the other Manhattan. And it’d be utterly miraculous if he snuck into the first round. I just dropped his name on this list so I could mention his nickname, “Optimus Klein.”

no, it’s more like Bama, USC, LSU.

Klein has to be one of the “ugliest” throwers of the football in recent memory. He did seem to improve during the season, but I can’t imagine him going high in the draft.

And I’ll put Texas’s RB stable up there with anyone’s.

Texas will have three 800 yd rushers this year. That’s depth, my friends.

If he played for a better team, Ryan Nassib of Syracuse could rise up to a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Arkansas RB corps won’t get the hype, but they have 3 different running style backs who are going to open up passing lanes for Tyler Wilson all day. they are also all upper-classmen.

Tim Ryan, you have an ugly avatar and an ugly font color. Get it together man.

Christ, the O’Brien mention reminds me against how fucking horrific the Randy Edsall hire was. It’s not even like people thought it was great at the time — Leach was the obvious choice — but god, Maryland football is a dumpster fire filled with infant babies.

But ark…can they pick up a blitz?
August 29th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Based off of what I’ve seen the scouts shoudl’ve trusted their first look at the guy rather than becoming enamored and taking him at 10 overall. He’s one of those guys that will never “win you” a game and you pray like hell he won’t “lose you” too many when he lines up under center.

This.
And in my 27+ years living in Baltimore I can’t remember MD football ever being relevant. (So what was the downside to hiring Leach?)

the response to Edsall at MD has been the finiest example of knee-jerk reactions possible ever displayed. he’s been there one year. in that one year he lost a ton of freidgen’s players, a group of players he managed to win 2 games with last year. however, it’s clear – like many other new coaching regimes – he wants his own players for his system. so far, this year’s recruiting class and next year’s classes look better on paper than anything freidgen brought into MD during his 10 years.

August 29th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
This.
More of a complaint against the school’s brass. When they fired Fridge the motive was that they would improve the position by hiring Leach. Then some asshat on the Board of Regents gets worried about the Adam/Craig James story and forces the brass to end their discussions and hire Edsall instead.
So, don’t blame the UMD fans for being pissed off from being promised a nice steak and getting a shit sandwich instead.

If Tannehil and RGIII have big years I could easily see Logan Thomas sliding up after a good year into the first round. He can truck people over and has a strong arm.

All the BBQ talk made me get a pulled pork sandwich for lunch. Abortion compared to real BBQ but it worked. Got sent on a beer run by my boss and used ninety minutes, woo efficiency.

i was talking philosophically…bunch of solon’s and plato’s up in cbus.
August 29th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Are we sure Leach is that much better than Edsall? I mean, Edsall took a UConn program that had only been D1 for a few years and had them competing at the top of the Big East pretty consistently (i know, it’s the Big East). Leach had that one great year at Tech (that ended in a bowl game loss to Ole Miss) and a bunch of 9-4, 8-5 type seasons with notoriously weak non-conf. scheduling. It’s not like you took Ron Zook over Bear Bryant.
August 29th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Not really.

To me, deep implies past performance. The backs are all talented, but outside of Hyde, haven’t yet performed at the college level – unless you count fumbling to give Toledo a chance to win in the ‘Shoe performance…
August 29th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
So, don’t blame the UMD fans for being pissed off from being promised a nice steak and getting a shit sandwich instead.
that assumes that nice steak ends up being as good as what you paid for, which isn’t the case more often than not.
August 29th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
In a word, yes.
UConn is in the Big East, which might as well as qualify as I-AA. Not that the ACC is worth a damn either.
When it comes down to a choice between a coach that has been winning in a real conference and has a fresh take on offense and is a bit of a character for the media to use as the focal point for the school, versus someone who came from a dreadful conference and coaches like it is still 1937, I think the choice is pretty clear.

without a doubt. plus, leach’s teams are easy to bet on.
August 29th, 2012 at 1:51 PM

then alabama’s not deep at all.
past performance in college at RB is useless. Lacy, who had a handful of carries last year, will be one of the best RBs in the nation if healthy.
August 29th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Jordan Hall is decent. Hyde could be a beast this year. Dunn’s a freshman and Rod Smith… Fuck Rod Smith. I was pumped hearing about him being Eddie George like after that bowl practice. And he couldn’t convince Jaylon Smith to come to OSU.

Boom Herron performed quite well. Jordan Hall hasn’t been Lydell Ross, but he hasn’t been a world beater, either.
Alabama running backs seem to get a sufficient number of touches to allow them to perform – witness Lacy with 631 yards on 84 carries (Hall had 405 on 99). Arkansas has been the same for several years now.

Eight months before the 2011 NFL Draft, Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert wasn’t considered 1st round material.
You kill me with this. They didn’t necessarily not like him as a 1st rounder. I don’t think he was expected to come out early at that point. Here’s a writeup from Mocking The Draft that probably gives a clearer understanding from the middle of the season in 2010:
No one seems to be talking about Blaine Gabbert these days. Maybe it’s because he plays on an average Missouri team. Maybe it’s because he has just five touchdowns to three interceptions this season. But don’t forget about those John Elway comparisons from last season. Gabbert still has the arm and enough mobility. He just has to string together a few good games to rise higher in these rankings. His ceiling is extremely high.
August 30th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
It’s a bit of a stretch to call Gabbert’s rise meteoric. He might not have been considered a top 10 lock, but he’s always been thought of as a high level NFL prospect with top 10 physical ability.
