Replacement Referees to Start NFL Season
According to Mike Freeman, the NFL sent a memo to its teams that the replacement referees would start the regular season. This could be just the latest exchange in the game of chicken between the game officials and the league regarding the lockout. Of course, at some point, there will be a drop-dead date where even if the officials sign a deal, they won’t be ready for the opening game. Have they been working out? Will Hochuli’s guns be as pronounced as they need to be? These are the pressing questions as we head toward the season starting in exactly one week.
My thought: the officials should absolutely call the league’s bluff here. Public outcry about officiating will dominate week 1. This will be true because there will invariably be bad calls (remember week 1 with Calvin Johnson two years ago), and that’s true even with the regular officials, but the din will be particularly loud here. The real range of referees, much like players, is broad, where the replacements will not outperform the best but may be near the bottom guys. We will see more questionable calls, just like we would see more questionable passes if everyone started their 3rd string quarterback.
The outcry, though, will be immense. Go ahead and start prepping the articles of outrage now. The NFL seems to be trying to squeeze every dollar. The officials, unlike the players, though, have longer careers and hopefully have planned for this. Also, whereas the outcry if last season had not started on time would have focused on the players to some extent, I think most will blame the league for not protecting their product here. Sit back and wait, officials, and let the NFL proceed with replacement referees. I don’t think it will hurt you in the long run.

yet another failure by that overrated nazi commissioner.

Normally I’d say who cares, but I know I’ll be yelling at them when my team is screwed over.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
Nothing new. Refs have been screwing the Ravens over for a decade. Doesn’t matter who wears the stripes.
Sincerely,
Baltimore

if the refs will be equally as bad across the board, and each team gets their fair share of bad calls, i am totally fine with never going back to the original refs. Replacement refs surely know how to call a game, right? Give them a few games under their belt and i’m sure they’ll be more or less serviceable. Someone show me some real, tangible benefit to bringing back the old guys. Once you show me that benefit, then tell me how the replacements cant accomplish the same ends in a short amount of time.

Unless they call games with flawless accuracy, this is inevitable.
Peter King is baking this nugget into Week One’s MMQB as I type this drinking a skinny caramel macchiato with 9 extra shots of espresso.

karma’s a bitch.

What is the NFL’s endgame here? NFL is going to wait until referees are destitute with $1 billion* being gambled on games a year? Goodell trying to socially engineer a Donaghy here.
* Nevada Gaming Commission estimated $1.1 billion on football gambling pro and college not including parlay bets. Between personal and international online betting the number is too fucking huge for me to fathom/google

It doesn’t matter if its full time officials or replacements. NFL officiating stinks. Yes, it’s good for the speed of the game and everything they need to call. But it still stinks. The rules stink, the limitations on challenges and replay stinks, the favoritism stinks, the officials’ inability to not throw a flag when some corner grazes a receiver’s shoe on a 60-yard uncatchable ball stinks, it all stinks.

Yeah but Bud Selig is the worst commissioner in the history of sports.

There’s a woman ref, so probably not.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Well that depends on who your team is. If it’s say, The Browns, then the refs have been screwing them over for years because the team is run by incompetent people. Now my Steelers are a prime example of the referees and the league always being in the bag for them since our GM knows how to draft players and develop them into pro bowlers. So basically it’s a lame excuse for when your team sucks.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Wait, I thought the league unfairly targeted the Steelers? You Yinzers need to pick a narrative and ride it.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
I think NFL officials are better than any of the NBA, NHL, or MLB officiating, in which, familiarity absolutely breeds contempt and rules are selectively interpreted on a daily and nightly basis.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Butters – come now, they haven’t been THAT bad.
What I am getting at is every argument in favor of bringing these guys back can be addressed with each passing game these guys get under their belts. Their jobs are unique in that with that right training and time put in, they can be experts.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
This is fucking gonna be horrible.

You’re like a sports talk radio caller taken to the internet
August 29th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
Were there any significant rule changes this year? I’m trying to remember. Are all endzone plays automatically reviewed now, even if they weren’t called a touchdown?
August 29th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
+ all my internet points

The simple task of spotting the ball after a penalty or a timeout has been butchered numerous times. Not to say that it never happened before, but expect the number of these occurrences to go up. Now imagine this happening when you’re trying to run a two minute drill…
August 29th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
I guess they know how to operate the whistle and have a basic understanding of how football works…as it pertains to keeping the game flowing and making correct calls however they leave a lot to be desired
There was a time when scab labor was looked down upon in this country and now it’s celebrated in certain circles…I blame The Replacements for creating this mindset
August 29th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
Not sure on the latter, but for the former…all turnovers are reviewed (not necessarily under the hood, but in the booth). Throwing the red-flag gets you an unsportsmanlike penalty.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
I have a stable mind, I don’t do narratives. Everyone has gotten fucked over with a personal penalty for breathing on a QB’s hair in the last 2 years.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
CJ: I think all turnovers are auto-reviews now.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
Yes, and now all turnover plays will be automatically reviewed freeing up coaches’ challenges for thrilling spot location replays
August 29th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
I do agree with that. They do well for what they’re responsible for reviewing. I’d also say that a lot of their perceived ineptness among casual fans is a result of rules rather than decisions (although the overcalling of PI is absurd).
August 29th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
Sean Payton sees nothing wrong with scab labor.
/waits for bounty to be put on my head
August 29th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
I just don’t see how these guys will ruin/alter the outcome of exponentially more games. Fans already bitch about blown calls enough, not to mention when they actually DO get blown (Denver last(?) year week 1), so I have to shrug my shoulders at this.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
oh come on…that’s absurd. the browns get screwed not because we’re incompetent, but because god hates us.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Fuck the NFL. Officiating has been awful so far in the preseason. I’m not talking about the penalty calls or non calls either.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Looking forward to more 2-3 minute conferences with them debating whether it was offsides or a false start…maybe this is why the league moved the late kicks back to 3:25 God’s Time
August 29th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
First ravens preseason game, head replacement official called Atlanta “Arizona.”
Twice.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
That’s on you for watching preseason ball, chief.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Ball placement will be a treat. Hopefully they let Suh decapitate QB’s now though.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
I should have said the Lions since most of their fans own all of the tin foil hats in this country.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
My tin foil hat business is BOOMING.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
/recessioned
August 29th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
You obviously have not watched any preseason.
Extra plays/possessions to teams. Wrong down. Wrong spots.
WTF are you talking about?
August 29th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
that was pretty dastardly of the Ref’s when they creeped into the raven’s draft room and picked Joe Flacco.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
You know I was joking with the Baltimore post, right?
Refs drafted Kyle Boller, though. Did you know he could throw 80 yards while balancing on a unicycle?
August 29th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
word is the refs are behind the Jets having both Tebow and Sanchez on the roster, they wanted to make sure there was at least one game a week where they didn’t have to worry about reviewing completed passes.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
so what? flacco can throw 80 yards while balancing on his unibrow.
August 29th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
browns packers game the ref called a fumble an interception
August 29th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Matt Ryan can accurately throw 80 yards as long as you get someone else to handle the last 70 yards.
August 29th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
I predict the first player assault on a scab ref will take place by Week 2.
August 29th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
ooo almost…
matt ryan can accurately throw 80 yards as long as he’s 70 yards behind the line of scrimmage.
August 29th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Sean Payton … the John Fourcade of the 1987 Chicago Bears.
August 29th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
It’s officially open season on Drew Brees, based on some of the non-roughing calls I witnessed in the preseason.
August 30th, 2012 at 8:21 AM
Ryan Tannehill does not see a problem here
