College Football Top 25: Oregon Ducks, No. 4
Oregon Ducks (2011: 12-2, won Rose Bowl 45-38 vs. Wisconsin)
2012 Schedule: Arkansas State, Fresno State, Tennessee Tech, Arizona, at Washington State, Washington, bye, at Arizona State, Colorado, at USC, at California, Stanford, at Oregon State
Four-Year Trend: 2008 (10-3), 2009 (10-3), 2010 (12-1), 2011 (12-2)
Notable Player: RB De’Anthony Thomas. He’ll be moved all around in Oregon’s spread offense, so I’m not sure we can define him by a traditional position. What he will do over and over again in the offense is get the ball in space, whether through handoffs out of the read option, screen passes, quick throws, or downfield against single coverage. Ty already listed him as a guy flying under the radar at 20-1 for Heisman consideration, and I agree. His chances are better than 5% with LaMichael James gone, and those touches expanding.
Top Newcomers: Arik Armstead (OT), Bralon Addison (WR), Jake Rodrigues (QB)
Circle This Game: Oregon at USC (Nov. 3). Last year, Oregon lost at home to USC in a game that eliminated any chance of playing for a national title. They will have to win at USC, whether in the regular season or the title game, to get back to the national championship this year.
What’s New: The identity of offensive stars. Darron Thomas and LaMichael James are gone, so the Ducks will need new players to step into the high-powered offense. Marcus Mariota beat out Bryan Bennett to become the starting quarterback, and provides more of a running threat than Darron Thomas recently. Mariota had an 82 yard touchdown run in the spring game while completing over two-thirds of his passes. Kenjon Barner and De’Anthony Thomas already combined for over 2,300 yards from scrimmage last year, and should see those numbers increase dramatically in 2012 with James gone.
Why We Like Them: Chip Kelly has this program established as a legitimate power. They continue to recruit well and new offensive stars emerge. The offense has speed to burn at the skill positions. The defense is also has improved its athleticism and could become more of a strength this year, so despite only having 11 of 22 starters returning, Oregon should be in the title game mix.
Best-Case Scenario: The quarterback situation is just as good as last year, maybe even better, and De’Anthony Thomas is the best all-purpose weapon in the country as the team rolls to a win at USC, setting them up for a title run. We had debates about Oregon and USC–I’m picking Oregon even though we collectively ranked them just behind USC–but the winner of that game should be a title contender. It’s on the road so I understand why people have USC, but this best-case scenario would not surprise me at all.
Worst-Case Scenario: The offense drops off a bit, one of their explosive players gets hurt, and they cannot overcome USC in the Pac-12 standings. They lose another game or two and risk falling out of BCS bowl contention.
Spread to Run: Chip Kelly’s spread offense puts wide receivers on the field to force matchups, but it usually is to dictate matchups in the running game. Oregon rushed for more yards than they passed in 2011, something that usually only happens if the quarterback is heavily involved in the rushing yardage totals. Darron Thomas actually ran less last year, and accounted for only 206 yards of the 4189 rushing yards. Kelly’s offense continually adapts within core principles, so it will be interesting to see how much more QB Mariota is utilized on speed option keepers compared to 2011, with LaMichael James out of the offense, a dynamic runner at QB, and the talents of Barner and Thomas.
Projected Bowl: Rose Bowl

Bielema never once onside kicking in that game was a goddamn travesty not to mention taking the ball first meaning Oregon got to go TD-Halftime-TD without Wilson & Friends seeing the ball…he’s the worst
August 29th, 2012 at 5:58 PM
I think I’m jumping on the growing bandwagon of Oregon-LSU BCS Championship game. I’m not worried about Mariota, and I think USC is too thin on defense to slow Oregon down in the least bit.
August 29th, 2012 at 6:09 PM
And the ducks D?
August 29th, 2012 at 6:15 PM
AT USC will be the difference
August 29th, 2012 at 6:16 PM
That schedule is a fucking joke. Pathetic. Not a single even loseable road game.
Frauds.
August 29th, 2012 at 6:19 PM
ridic. Oregon will lose 2
August 29th, 2012 at 6:46 PM
So what’s the dirt on Darron Thomas? IE what the hell was he thinking? Declares knowing he has little to no stock, doesn’t get drafted, doesn’t even get signed as a undrafted free agent…Gotta be some sort of backstory as to why he didn’t come back for his Senior year.
August 29th, 2012 at 6:46 PM
they’ll get smoked by USC
August 29th, 2012 at 6:47 PM
Maybe he realized he’d be third string QB this year…
August 29th, 2012 at 6:49 PM
what a putrid non-con schedule. disgraceful.
August 29th, 2012 at 6:50 PM
Sorta what I was thinking. Kelly don’t take no shit if his two year incumbent starter was told to take a hike.
August 29th, 2012 at 6:56 PM
SEC teams think that schedule is a joke.
my favorite team, Syracuse, is going nowhere. They did have the balls, however, to schedule Northwestern, USC, Missouri, and Minnesota (i know – weak Big Ten but still..). Their only non BCS conference game is against Stony Brook
August 29th, 2012 at 7:03 PM
what a putrid non-con schedule. disgraceful.
App State was all booked up
August 29th, 2012 at 7:05 PM

BCS conferencewinnable game is against Stony BrookAugust 29th, 2012 at 7:09 PM
every conference game outside of Louisville is winnable. The Big East is a steaming pile
August 29th, 2012 at 7:11 PM
every conference game outside of Louisville is winnable. The Big East is a steaming pile
yes, i f’d that up
August 29th, 2012 at 7:15 PM
They looked so good last year when they housed West Virginia in the dome. Cuse was 5-2 after that. They lost the final 5 games. It was painful. Nassib is an average QB but that O-Line was atrocious and ruined it
August 29th, 2012 at 7:24 PM
Imthink I bet on them against Louisville and lost
August 29th, 2012 at 7:28 PM
yeah, Louisville bent them over the table and took the Orange to pound town
August 29th, 2012 at 7:57 PM
agreed on that last part, but there’s this thing called ‘defense’ you know…
August 29th, 2012 at 8:05 PM
Spencer, was reading other post,..in what field do you work?
August 29th, 2012 at 8:15 PM
finance…do estate, investment and business plan design for high net worth clients. i like describing it that way because, while it doesn’t sound glamorous, saying it that way keeps me from starting a bullet rich diet.
August 29th, 2012 at 8:18 PM
They were 5-2 only because the refs in the Toledo game made the NFL scabs look competent in comparison. In any other reality, Orange was 4-3 at that point.
August 29th, 2012 at 8:29 PM
Spencer, it sounds interesting. I am exploring new career options. It sucks because all these training and certificate programs are way too expensive
August 29th, 2012 at 8:31 PM
I am exploring new career options.
Like what? What is it you do with that part time gig you talk about here and there?
August 29th, 2012 at 8:33 PM
I’ll take any career option over what I do here. Don’t make enough, don’t like the work, and to add the cherry on top-the scheduling I work pretty much destroys your social life. Everyone’s in bed by the time I get off and nothing’s really going on Mondays or Tuesdays.
August 29th, 2012 at 8:39 PM
AP…it’s a shame because the shit i do and the people i work with, i fucking love. i just can’t take management anymore…i really can’t. it’s so fucking hard to keep my tongue bit during national calls when they’re telling a bunch of 20-somethings worked to death that the dept is down 20% from last year.
OH IT’S THE ECONOMY THEY SAY! OH IT’S ALL OBAMA’S FAULT THEY CRY!
really? because from ground level it looks like fucking office space. i have eight highly compensated bosses and no idea what six of them do. more and more responsibilities hoisted on us and yet when we have the nerve to ask for a PITIFUL raise, you know…TO HELP PAY FOR THE DESIGNATIONS THEY WON’T REIMBURSE US FOR ANYMORE…we get looked at like we asked the bosses for a portion of their own salaries.
fuck them. we have such a unique dept in the industry and yet we’re so poorly marketed. the fucking CEO was surprised to hear what we actually do at least year’s big conf. 2,200 planners…400 use us even though if they used us full time, they’d get support of a team of 30 fucking geniuses for a QUARTER the cost they pay their staff.
fuck this industry man. you don’t need this shit.
August 29th, 2012 at 8:43 PM
I wasnt talking about your industry specifically, just looking at various industries.
Meth, i do conduct surveys..whenever there actually is work.
This area is economically struggling, which means companies won’t take chances on unexperienced people and people with a record. I’ve looked at various training programs but i have no way to pay for them. It would be nice if I was living in a bigger place where there were more opportunities. Its just not possible right now.
/fuck you career builder and every other job site
August 29th, 2012 at 8:48 PM
/fuck you career builder and every other job site
Agreed. Waste of time. Did you mean you conduct surveys, or do “Conduct” surveys?
August 29th, 2012 at 8:48 PM
lately ive been struggling to come up with an answer ive asked myself as to why i work my ass off in this shitty field only to be broke when i could wait tables or caddy full time and be just as broke only, you know, HAPPY.
going on two weeks and the only reason i can come up with is i don’t have the balls to actually do it.
August 29th, 2012 at 8:50 PM
This area is economically struggling,
That’s why I won’t move up to the part of PA where the rest of my family is at or up in upstate NY where I was born. There’s nothing around. If you didn’t grow up there to know people asides from family or have highly specialized sought after skills you’re fucked. That’s the boat I fall in.
August 29th, 2012 at 8:50 PM
Meth, i conduct surveys. Tired typo on my part.
Been there with good paying jobs that made me miserable. I just need a chance to prove that im reliable and a good person/employee. Tired of the nonsense that goes on with companies in this region.
August 29th, 2012 at 8:52 PM
Understood. what kind of surveys do you do? Like property surveying, or actual like question and answer surveys?
August 29th, 2012 at 8:55 PM
going on two weeks and the only reason i can come up with is i don’t have the balls to actually do it.
I wish I had the balls to tell the head person in charge here in our meeting a few weeks ago the real reason the turnover rate at this job has fallen to almost 0% whereas years past (I wasn’t here for them, though) their turnover rate was only surpassed by places like fast food restaurants and convenience stores. And the reason is is because years past you could easily find another job. But if you’ve got a shitty job with shitty pay and all you can find is an equally shitty job with even shittier pay….chances are you’re not going anywhere.
August 29th, 2012 at 8:58 PM
I got out of the corporate world for good when it reached the point that for every 10 minutes of real work I did I spend 4 hours explaining to my 6 bosses and 5 project managers my 10 minutes of work. And if I wanted to take a shit I had to run it by 15 people to make sure everyone was “in the loop.”
August 29th, 2012 at 8:59 PM
And if I wanted to take a shit I had to run it by 15 people to make sure everyone was “in the poop.”
Fixed.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:00 PM
for every 10 minutes of real work I did I spend 4 hours explaining to my 6 bosses and 5 project managers my 10 minutes of work.
Sad but true most of the time.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:01 PM
You wouldn’t be happy waiting tables.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:03 PM
You wouldn’t be happy waiting tables.
I think the happy was referring to caddying.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:03 PM
a sarcastic “thanks” for my boss being out for five of the past six months on disability…the dept ran smooth as shit while she was gone. she’s been back for a week and a half, so, naturally, today we had a HOUR LONG CONFERENCE CALL ON PEER EVALUATIONS.
yes.
that’s right.
nevermind my caseload’s been over 117% for the past 18 months, and over 141% since march…PEER EVALUATIONS ARE VERY IMPORTANT AND MUST BE DISCUSSED FOR ONE HOUR SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF THE AFTERNOON.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:05 PM
I dunno…I left my job a couple weeks ago. I had three different offers to choose from when I left. I don’t exactly work in a “specialized” field or anything like that. There is so much crap out there in the job market, that if you can craft a good resume and/or interview well, you’ll be head and shoulders above the competition.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:06 PM
i worked in restaurants for god hows how long in HS and college, and while it wasn’t nirvana, at least i wasnt a cynical, bitter dickhead back then.
i think of it this way…id have mornings off, cash every night and my coworkers would have drugs.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:07 PM
There is so much crap out there in the job market,
Says the guy not from Delaware. That the thing about what you said. Had 3 offers when you left. If I had that, I’d leave in a heartbeat. I’m not just going to walk away without something lined up. Bills and food cost money. At least they do here in Delaware.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:07 PM
Waiting tables was fun when I was 20. Wad of cash, easy drugs, booze, hot chicks. Old people waiting tables are sad. Not demeaning them, work is work, but its not “fun” over 30.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:09 PM
All the looking I do for other work, I’ve only had one offer. And that was from my old boss who offered me my old job back. But he never officially laid me off when he did, he just quit answering his phone and assumed I’d “get the message.” So when he needed me, fuck him.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:09 PM
and you know what? this bugged the fuck out of me…we have an hour long conf call on fucking evaluations and yet, the NEW AND IMPROVED evaluation for my position has three yes/no questions they ask you to rate on a 1-5 scale…
1 for no and 2-5 depending on the scale of yes? “i like this guy’s a prick…yea, he ‘yes’d’ the shit out of this category, but im gonna give him a two because im a passive aggressive piece of shit who rips people apart in anonymous peer evaluations because i had to do my job instead of looking at kitties on tumblr*.”
*…i plead the fif
August 29th, 2012 at 9:11 PM
You are missing my point. I would never advocate leaving a job without something lined up; that is not sound logic. My point is that there are tons of people applying for literally any job, that if you are actually qualified for said job, you have a better chance of standing out amongst the crowd.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:11 PM

Ay ay ay ay. That’s fucked. My old company did the same thing. Until we asked our COO how exactly he would like us to grade a Yes or No question on a 1-5 scale. Yes. No. Pretty fucking black or white.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:14 PM
yea…helps once youve got your foot in the door, no doubt. i had a couple offers after a year for decent jobs in san diego and atlanta, but didn’t take em at the time. not sure what’d have happened cuz those offers were right when the economy went to serious shit in 2008.
im thinking they prolly wouldve been cut…and it’s a lot easier to live nicely in cleveland than SD or atlanta when you don’t make a ton of money.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:14 PM
My point is that there are tons of people applying for literally any job, that if you are actually qualified for said job, you have a better chance of standing out amongst the crowd.
I got your point. You made it seem as though I haven’t been trying. I’m young, my qualifications and skills are limited. Like A.P. alluded to, a lot of people these days aren’t willing to take untrained or unqualified people because they can find 20 people that do have training and qualifications.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:16 PM
Until we asked our COO how exactly he would like us to grade a Yes or No question on a 1-5 scale.
Hated those, myself. Usually find those on applications. On a scale of 1-10, how do strongly do you agree/disagree with this reaction towards this particular situation?
August 29th, 2012 at 9:16 PM
i brought this up to her and how two positions are evaluated on the same yes/no answers when if one of us does it for a case, then it’s done period. she looked at her printout with that “i just can’t find an answer” look and i just giggled to myself.
i haven’t told em yet, but im not sure id have found that funny if i didn’t already have a foot out the door.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:17 PM
on a scale of 1-10, did the saints beat the colts in the super bowl?
August 29th, 2012 at 9:17 PM
how do strongly do
Apparently I need to go back to high school not job training.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:19 PM
Spencer, I would be proud to extend an offer to you to become my pool boy. It includes health benefits, albeit only related to anything in your thorax, and no money. Also, please bring pot and Johnny Walker Blue.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:21 PM
the walker you can have, but the chronic…she’s-a-mine…until i pass.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:21 PM
And you just answered your own question, Meth, about why people don’t just pack up and move away from places that aren’t the best to live in. Many literally cannot, for the same reason you cannot.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:24 PM
The conspiracy theorists mark that a solid “1″.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:24 PM
I’m not saying you haven’t tried. And I’m saying that I don’t think (or at least haven’t seen in my field) that are 20 people qualified for every job. I look through so many resumes that I just shake my head at because they have nothing to do with what I’m looking for. I’ll GLADLY take a chance on someone without experience if I think they are a fit for what I’m looking for. I train for a living; if I can’t mold you into what I want you to be, then I should find a new career.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:24 PM

Meth – research surveys…like “Good evening, do you have a few minutes to answer some questions regarding your health benefits?” or “Good evening, I am doing a survey on drug and alcohol use and abuse in your county, do you have a few minutes?”

I can’t remember what you said you do, or if you ever even mentioned it. What is it?
August 29th, 2012 at 9:26 PM
We had to do “inspections” for our stores. Sample question:
Rate the cleanliness of your front door window on a scale of 1-5.
You joking me? Either the fucking window is clean or it’s not. Clean/dirty is pretty fucking objective. Let’s not over complicate it.

The reverse is also true. A lot of employers aren’t willing to take on experienced and qualified workers because they’d rather hire untrained, unexperienced workers for much, much cheaper.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:28 PM
I work for a small retail food chain. I travel and help open up new stores, and when I’m not on the road I conduct training/development classes from our office. I also do our data reporting and point-of-sale database management.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:28 PM
And you just answered your own question, Meth, about why people don’t just pack up and move away from places that aren’t the best to live in. Many literally cannot, for the same reason you cannot.
I never said I couldn’t. I said I won’t. Trust me, if you wanted to sacrifice enough you could sell some belongings to get money. If I sold all my guns and surf fishing equipment, sold the rims off my truck and replaced them with cheap regular ones, I’d have me a fat stash. You ain’t ever going to let me live that shit down, are you?

Went to the Dodgers/Rockies game earlier. Dang, it was wild. Rox scored seven in the 8th, and still lost.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:32 PM
Which is a shame, because (IMO) you really aren’t better off in the long run. I believe you pay for what you get. You want to hire green, entry-level staff on the cheap? Don’t be surprised when they fail to meet expectations. Unless you have a top-notch, buttoned-up training program, you’re not going to make chicken salad out of chicken shit.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:33 PM

Tasty and not so tasty.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:36 PM
I’m probably oversensitive to it because I’m from that region, and I know a lot of people there who would like to get out, but they have nothing to sell because their houses are now worth nothing, or they lost them in previous storms and have been living with family or friends for a few years. They’re saddled with debt, kids, aging parents, and few or no prospects for better employment.
And if they could get out, where would they go to find jobs? Delaware?
Someone pointed out in another post that most people who live in such areas mostly don’t do it by choice. Well-to-do people live where they choose; poor people live where they can. For the most part, they were born there, they’re stuck there, and they will die there.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:36 PM
AP what kind of customer service did you do? The company I work for offers full time telecommuting positions for technical customer service.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:37 PM
Again, sorry, that’s fucked.
Let’s see: You have experience, you fucked up, you will actually come clean to it (and not lie and bullshit about it)…you’re way ahead of the game in my book. I’d have more of an issue with the guy BS’ing his resume than one who has the balls to come clean.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:37 PM
i also love the evaluater logic where categories that can be legitimately ranked are either 1 or 5′s…it’s like if TBL’s mark sanchez evaluation scale where the slightest hint of competency deserves a 10.

Grantland had an interesting article yesterday on the Dodgers-Red Sox trade, and how it’s evidence of the Dodgers’ willingness to go in a new direction regarding salary structure/luxury tax, etc. In essence, they’re willing to spend like sailors on liberty ’cause they can.
Gonzalez had 2 RBI today. Punto was a late defensive replacement. Guess the trade worked out.

I agree absolutely. But it’s what happens when jobs are controlled by mega-corporations that are interested only in short-term cash-ins, not long-term stability, and give no fuck about the people who work for them or the communities they churn for their profits.

As a Sox fan, I’m thrilled. I read the Grantland piece you’re talking about, and the “hitting the RESET button” is the best analogy you could make for this trade. I didn’t necessarily want to see Gonzalez go, but if that’s what it takes to get rid of Beckett and Crawford, you do that deal every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
A quarter billion dollars of salary commitments the Sox shed in a day…

Worst part is that it happens in other companies that are far from mega-corporations. It’s an unhealthy mentality that is almost everywhere these days. After the entire country decided they wanted to be greedy as fuck, they now feel like they can get something out of nothing without putting any effort into it.

That alone amazes me.
I will admit this, the Sox get to reshape their roster in a way that’s more palatable to the fans. Market Pedroia as your centerpiece. Surround him with a bunch of scrappy overachievers, get Joe Torre to manage, and voila, all is forgiven.

I think the law differs by state. IIRC there is some law in PA that refusing the breathalyzer is an automatic guilty plea and 1 year license suspension.
August 29th, 2012 at 9:56 PM
Not necessarily true. That varies state by state. They can’t do that in Massachusetts, so I wouldn’t have had to worry about that.
Damn, son. Smokey must not have been too impressed when they saw that reading.

I had an amazing interview at a place early in August. I passed all the testing and killed it with the recruiter. I got the email a few days later saying i didnt get the job. They didnt say it in the email but i knew it was due to the background check. Depressing. I was more qualified than most people who work there (usually have been anywhere i have worked). They will take any half-smart fuck who sucks at their job as long as they are a saint. Do these companies not know about the bonding process? Fuckfaces
August 29th, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Yikes. That’s scary shit.
Worst part about mine was that I “passed” the field sobriety tests (or at least had other circumstances that would explain why I “failed” them), yet I still blew. Not to mention, Massachusetts has this little thing where they don’t care how long it’s been since you had a DUI, or whether or not it was in the same state; they automatically accelerate the charge.
My first one was when I was in college in NH 11 years prior. Yet I got charged with a 2nd offense.

Scary indeed. Big time lesson learned.

Whenever I make the point that I paid more in income taxes last year than GE, someone like Mike NYC will counter, “Yeah, but you don’t create jobs.”
Actually, we all create jobs when we spend. Corporations don’t create the jobs; consumers do. Giving more tax breaks to super-rich, overprivileged, entitled fucks who already pay little in taxes doesn’t create jobs, because that money goes into their offshore accounts. Paying people a fair salary that they can not only get by but prosper on creates jobs, because that money goes back into the economy.
August 29th, 2012 at 10:12 PM
The cop did buy a car from me about 3 months later though.

August 29th, 2012 at 10:14 PM
It was a little awkward, but I was the one blacked out and still driving. He was cool about it. He even called my employer and told them I cooperated, and ultimately that played a big part in me keeping my job.
August 29th, 2012 at 10:15 PM
you dont give tax breaks to the super rich, you give tax breaks to the corporations tho…gotta give incentives for as many companies to invest here as possible.
im all for becoming as disgustingly wealthy as you can, but i don’t really see how not giving any tax breaks on income over $1mm, as a hypothetical, is really an attack on the wealthy. that additional taxation has almost no impact on your quality of life.

Re the DUI thread: a story I read a long time ago in Rolling Stone:
Hunter S. Thompson gets pulled over in L.A. while tripping balls. Cop orders him out of the car, starts putting him through the sobriety checklist back then (stand on one foot; close your eyes, extend one arm and touch the end of your nose; etc.)
Thompson, being a melodramatic smartass, throws out his arms in a Jesus-on-the-cross pose and snaps his head back. His sunglasses go flying off, and without opening his eyes or moving his arms, he somehow catches them.
And he says to the cop: “That’s gotta be worth something, right?”
August 29th, 2012 at 10:33 PM

What amazes me about Casablanca is how much of the script was done on the fly. The movie was originally supposed to end with Rick being sent off to a concentration camp; everyone involved thought that was a bummer, but no one could think of anything else that worked.
Then, one day toward the end of shooting, as the Epstein brothers were riding to work, the light bulb went off, and one turned to the other and blurted out, “Round up the usual suspects!”
Voila – pure gold.

You’re on the money, SROD®.
Claude Rains not taking home an Oscar for that movie is as much of an indictment of the Academy Awards as Citizen Kane losing two years earlier.
Another horrific Oscar fail: Robert Shaw not even getting nominated for Jaws. The scene in which he recalls the sinking of the Indianapolis could be a textbook for great acting and great directing.

Hey smallie it would almost make sense to ask you what you have versus what you haven’t seen.
/Hasn’t seen 95% of the movies you haven’t seen either
//Shuts his mouth takes his milk and cookies and walks away

Never seen that one either.
I HAVE seen that one.

I find that watching movies severely cuts into my reading time. I’ve seen more movies in the last 5 years than the previous 27 combined.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:09 PM
I’m on the other end from a lot of regulars here. I’ve seen just about any “classic” film you can name, but I haven’t seen many movies of recent vintage.
Spent a lot of time in my salad days in movie houses, and I sat through a lot of contemporary dreck, and eventually my view evolved to: if it’s good today, it will still be good later on, and I’ll catch up to it in due time.

I have 2 big boxes of good (according to my brother) books that I need to read. Seems all I ever read is the newspaper everyday and the occasional magazine and this blog/dong blog depending on who you ask.

That’s a good mantra. What are salad days if you don’t mind me asking.

You can both read a lot and watch movies a lot, Smallie. I read voraciously for years. Heck, one summer, as a challenge to myself, I read the entire Worldbook Encyclopedia, all 20 volumes plus the appendices.
This all probably explains why I’m nearsighted as fuck today.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:13 PM
He had given me a bunch of books when he was done reading them. This job would actually be the perfect opportunity to start putting a dent in them.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:14 PM
I listen to any and all recommendations on reading material. I’ve been on a fiction kick lately, but I’ve read non fiction, biographies, science fiction, and everything in between.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:16 PM
It’s from Shakespeare, referring to what were basically your zestful, youthful years. Prime of life, so to speak.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:16 PM
I know you can, but I have always just preferred to read than to watch. I never read the encyclopedias, but I have read the Bible and the Book of Mormon start to finish.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:19 PM
Well in that case, Nada, I spent my salad days turning my brain into a gelatinous fruit salad. Bout smoked myself retarded.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus has a great movie parody called “Sam Peckinpah’s ‘Salad Days’” that may be the bloodiest thing ever seen on TV.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:20 PM
Monty Python’s Flying Circus
/Never seen it’d
August 29th, 2012 at 11:22 PM
That puts you one up on me. Made it through most of the Bible a few years back but lost interest, and I’ve never considered reading Joe Smith’s book.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:22 PM
I can’t remember the name of the one I had seen. I thought it was good but I know people that hold it in regards as the funniest movie they’d ever seen. I wouldn’t go that far, in my own opinion.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:24 PM
You ankle-nippers make me feel old as SROD® sometimes.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:27 PM
Actually read that one first.
/raised Mormon

Speaking of SROD, he must be happy that the Nats won, but bummed that Harper got tossed after hitting two homers.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:29 PM
I’m more likely to see the South Park guys’ Book of Mormon than to read the actual book.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:35 PM
Speaking of books, I think I’m gonna book it here. Early and long day at work on tap.
Gute nacht, kinder.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:40 PM
nada, they needed a win badly.
Harper has been a little mouthy lately. As he’s been struggling, he’s been wearing his frustrations outwardly. Him getting ejected was bound to happen.
And, OBTW, Wade Miley or Todd Frazier is a more deserving NL ROY.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:42 PM
I’m in the middle of a book right now that is taking forever. It’s not even that long, it’s just disappointingly average, but I can’t just stop reading it and start another one. When that gets done though, anyone have suggestions? Any genre really.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:49 PM
Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth is my all time favorite series. If you have an interest in scifi (dragons, wizards, etc), I found them to be gripping from the birst book all the way through the end of the series.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:59 PM
going on two weeks and the only reason i can come up with is i don’t have the balls to actually do it.
young, single is the best time

That’s a new one for me. I’ll have to give them a read.
