College Football Top 25: South Carolina Gamecocks, No. 6
South Carolina Gamecocks [2011: 11-2 (6-2), Beat Nebraska 30-13 in Capital One Bowl]
Four-Year Trend: 2008 (7-6), 2009 (7-6), 2010 (9-5), 2011 (11-2)
Notable Player: Jadeveon Clowney, DE. Clowney is 6’6″ 260 who has been clocked at 4.4 in the 40. The Nation’s No. 1 Overall recruit in 2011 was used mostly as a spot pass rusher last year, and still racked up eight sacks, 12 tackles for loss and five forced fumbles. This year, he should take a massive step forward, being used as an every down player and being shuttled around the field. The Gamecocks have even explored using him at middle linebacker. He should be a bonafide Heisman contender in 2013. He may reach that point sooner.
Top Newcomers: Mike Davis (RB), Shaq Roland (WR), Jordan Diggs (DB)
Notable Spurrier: The Head Ball Coach took shots at Richt, Saban and Miles, had a quotable SEC Media Day and sported a fashion-forward bucket visor. He also has Dabo Swinney completely psyched out.
Why We Like Them: In 2011, the Gamecocks had their senior starting quarterback implode and lost their elite running back for the season. They still finished 11-2. South Carolina should have one of the nation’s best defensive lines despite losing Melvin Ingram to the NFL. Lattimore should hit 100 percent at some point during the season. Connor Shaw, the second highest-rated passer in the SEC last year, gives them both stability and a running threat.
Why We’re Concerned: South Carolina has some holes to fill on the offensive line, most notably replacing Rokevious Watkins. They will also feature a revamped and injury-burdened secondary, though being able to rush with four on the defensive line should alleviate pressure on them.
Circle This Game: South Carolina vs. Georgia (Oct. 6) The Gamecocks won a crazed 45-42 meeting last year. They will be looking for a firmer win this season, as they state their claim for the SEC East.
Best-Case Scenario: Spurrier trusts Connor Shaw. Lattimore stays healthy. The secondary is competent. South Carolina has one slip up, probably at LSU, but finished the season 11-1 and wins the SEC East.
Worst-Case Scenario: Spurrier gets trigger happy with Shaw. Lattimore is not 100 percent and the offense sputters. The secondary remains a liability. The Gamecocks struggle through a tough SEC schedule to finish a disappointing (and more traditional) 7-5.
Projected Bowl: Cotton

still can’t believe you have Florida at 14.

Way too high for SC. Their record last year was largely a result of avoiding all the good SEC teams. They finished the season with one win over a ranked team, and it was that crazy Georgia game. South Carolina has four-plus losses this year.

still can’t believe they canceled The Fall Guy.

Still can’t believe OSU is at 8 and MSU at 20.

See Georgia this year.

still can’t believe tiger fucked that perkins waitress.

They have a four week stretch of Georgia, @LSU, @UF and then what could be a proverbial “trap” game vs UT. Spurrier gets them out of that stretch with only one loss and I’ll buy them as playing for the SEC title.

a little something to keep in mind: Sakerlina is 1-5 against Arkansas in the past 6 years.

The line of (-7) on Bovada for SC against Vandy for Thursday seems low to me, especially since they won 21-3 last year.

this post needs more Baw Coach.

still can’t believe it’s not butter.

I still can’t believe he was dumb enough to get caught.
August 28th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Well. They did play one.
August 28th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Truth. Four months from now, people are going to look at South Carolina and wonder how the hell they were a preseason top 10.
August 28th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
are they even going to beat vandy?
August 28th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
My bad. They played Arkansas and got their ass kicked.
Of their 10 wins, 8 came against East Carolina, Citadel, Navy (by 3), Vandy, Kentucky, Miss St (by 2), Tennessee and Florida (by 5). They had two decent wins all year — Georgia with the Dawgs on a short week coming off the Boise loss and an always-dominant late season Clemson team (/sarcasm).
SC is a huge fraud.

The expression on that Clemson fan’s face is priceless.

August 28th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
SCjr at #6. lol.
August 28th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Also, Clowney is a nice talent and all, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say the best RB in football is their “notable” player.
August 28th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Well done, Spence.
August 28th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Oh, thanks, this is what I was looking for.
August 28th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
How is Knile Davis South Carolina’s “notable” player?
August 28th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
They’re lucky they don’t have us on the schedule again. Auburn has owned Spurrier forever…ish.
August 28th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
lol. Good one.
August 28th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
By the way, and I hate to say it, but I think TJ Yeldon has the most upside of any RB in the SEC. Dude is going to be freaking good.
August 28th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
This may refresh your memory
Hi-Five!
August 28th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
And, as a defensive player, Clowney has no chance of winning the Heisman.

And a Hi-Five to your sir. God, I’m happy Wilson and Boobie are going to play at the same time for once.

Connor Shaw, the second highest-rated passer in the SEC last year
I actually laughed out loud when I read that.
August 28th, 2012 at 5:19 PM
Their last 7 games hold 3 losses, minimum.
August 28th, 2012 at 5:29 PM
Neither SCAR or FSU finish the season in the Top 10
August 28th, 2012 at 5:40 PM
Hog fans are always quick to call South Carolina overrated, but then point to the Gamecocks as one of their marquee victories last season.
So which is it Hogs???

Lol. SCAR crushed Clemson and Nebraska last season.

They beat a slumping ACC team in a rivalry game then won an exhibition a month after the season ended. Wow, impressive.

Bawhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
No.
/Bookmarked.
August 29th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Not just Spurrier, SC hasn’t beaten Auburn since joining the SEC. Have taken care of Bama and LSU both multiple times, but still searching for a win over Auburn.

Queef you incorrectly stated that SCAR only beat 1 team in the Final Top 25. They beat 3.
But you do have a point that crushing the ACC Champs is fairly meaningless.
