Not all disaster areas are equal. Some areas like NOLA had some deteriorated infrastructure that helped elevate the level of disaster. Some areas of FL are overpopulated (or just lack the highways to effectively evacuate the current population in case of a significant weather event). And there are some areas that are used to things (like parts of OH/PA/NY with blizzards. When the big earthquake hits one day and wipes out a bunch of people in SoCal, it’ll be because it’s of catastrophic proportions, not because they largely haven’t done some situational testing and watched their infrastructure.

Meth, I’m not addressing the misapprehension that others may have had about the potential for bodily harm. I’m talking more about your blanket statement that people who live where disasters have occurred and will occur again deserve to experience the destruction that they do. And 18 years is not a terribly large sample from the weather record, which in most cases extends back to the 1870s. And to chide people for being upset that their property is destroyed is misguided to say the least. I’ve got nothing further to say on this subject, but everything you’ve said here reeks of a misguided, uninformed attitude based on personal opinion and bias rather than any sort of sound logic. What you’re saying makes perfect sense if someone builds a house on the edge of a volcano that is actively shooting lava in the air. But that’s not the same thing as any other natural disaster that has been brought up here.

It’s the regular occurrences I refer to. Yes, it can happen here, 18 years it hasn’t and never will happen in the annual frequency that severe weather events happen in other areas. I’m not dictating where people should live. And I said, I never meant, or meant for it to be interpreted as people deserved to die or lose everything. In areas like that, you should know better. And those who do, obviously like it enough to take the risk. So when shit happens, shut up and deal with it.

Yes I can say you’re completely wrong. By your earlier logic, that you haven’t had destructive event yet doesn’t matter because you still could. Natural disasters occur everywhere. Some of them are relatively mundane (flooding, wildfires) and some are spectacular events which garner major media coverage (hurricanes, earthquakes). But a disaster is still a disaster. And indicting people for living in Florida in the broad brush manner that you did is just ridiculous.
