Red Sox & Dodgers Complete Blockbuster Trade to Send Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto to LA
Well, it happened. The Red Sox plan to place Adrian Gonzalez on waivers and trade him actually worked. According to multiple people, the deal is done. (The Boston Herald is also reporting the deal has been completed.) The Red Sox have dumped Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto and their salaries in exchange for James Loney and four minor-leaguers.
Gonzalez was traded to the Red Sox after the 2010 season. In 2011, Gonzalez had career highs in hits, RBIs, OBP and won his third Gold Glove. His numbers have taken a dip this season. Gonzalez is set to make $21 million a year through 2018.
Carl Crawford signed with the Red Sox before the 2011 season and has underperformed in Boston. Josh Beckett once drank beer in the clubhouse. Nick Punto is Nick Punto.

can’t wait to see what first baseman they overpay to under perform now.
in the long run it was probably better off, gonna be some shitty teams in the next few years.

Do the Sox make a run at Hamilton or Bourne now?

Good to see Dodgers got Juan Pierre back.
Now BoSox need to trade for Jayson Werth to make the locals happy.

Hope the Dodgers fans don’t put anyone in a coma celebrating this trade. Unfortunately, it’s probably likely in that cesspool.

I’ll have a Coke, then.
Hamilton would be a train-wreck here, don’t you think?

What I really want to know now is whether they will bring back Bobby V for next year. I’d actually like to see what he could do with a cleaned-up roster.

I think Bobby V is definitely coming back now. This gives him an excuse for this year. That’s the only thing that bothers me about this deal.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to get Farrell if the Jays will give him up.

suddenly the Dodgers are loaded.
Very nice to see Boston burn this season.

Hate Beckett, but he will instantly be better pitching in Dodger Stadium, Gonzalez is a huge upgrade over Loney, bye-bye SF.

No Hamilton. I think Ellsbury is gone, given his agent/age/demands. Ross and Ortiz will both be back for sure. The rotation got more open, and there will be lots of young competition for the 4-5 spots.
I just hope the Red Sox fans that are so happy now, have patience when Morales gets shelled early next year. I’m fairly happy, and I do think all 3 guys will succeed to varying degrees in LA but it wasn’t happening in Boston.
I’d have been ok with CC/JB/AG trade for nearly nothing, just because of the roster and payroll flexibility. Likewise, AG for those prospects wouldn’t have been too bad a deal. So this was a no-brainer for the front office, it’s just a matter of if it works.

This. Because you know everyone is going to be crying when these guys start crushing it out there next year. But you’re exactly right; it wasn’t going to happen here.
I’ll be interested to see what they do with the payroll flexibility. My hope is that they do nothing (or close to it). The free agent crop this year is sketchy at best. I want to see some of these kids they have in the system playing regularly. Let’s be honest…2013 couldn’t really go any worse than 2012 did. Right?
