UFC 151 Canceled Because Jon Jones Turned Down a Chael Sonnen Fight
Chael Sonnen was almost back. Jon Jones will defend his title at UFC 152 (Now the new UFC 151) against Lyoto Machida. Dan Henderson had to pull out with a partial tear of his ACL. Chael Sonnen was offered the title fight and accepted. Jones then turned down the fight with Sonnen. The UFC has decided to cancel the event. As Dana White pointed out, this is the first time that the promotion has canceled an event in 11 years.
Sonnen most recently lost to Anderson Silva at UFC 148. Following that fight, Sonnen announced a move to light heavyweight and almost immediately tried to start talking his way into a title fight with Jon Jones.
I KNOW you will never fight me. Don’t be afraid. But I’ll always be the monster in the closet of your mind, little JJ.

RT @jonnybones: @sonnench Why fight you? It’s a lose-lose situation for me. I lose the fight and I lose my title.
— chael sonnen (@sonnench) August 19, 2012
The toughest fight you’ve had at 205 was the chump who snatched the old ladies purse while you were playing on the swings at the park.

It worked. But Jones turned it down. This is incredible. Jones was already taking a beating from fans and media.
Update: This also says a lot about the quality of the current UFC cards. Instead of go on with a PPV without Jon Jones, the UFC has decided to outright cancel the event.

Good for Jones. Screw Chael and all shit talking. No way he deserves a title shot. It’s a shame the event got cancelled.

Jon Jones will defend his title at UFC 152 against Lyoto Machida.
Why can’t they just call it UFC 151?

That’s more convoluted than a soap opera’s murder mystery.

I want more on that MMA guy whose face now looks like the Terminator’s after it’s been through the wringer a few times.

Also, I thought it was compulsory on this site to have nekkiid pitchers of Rousey with all MMA posts.

Sonnen sales tickets and PPVs. He’s entertaining. He also is taking a extremely tough fight not a lot of guys would be willing to take.

Quack Quack.
/Jon Jones

I know nothing about UFC and couldnt care less about any of these meatheads. But reading this post makes me believe that the guy who turned down the fight had absolutely nothing to gain by going through with it.

When my kid is 30 will they be at UFC 5,454? When will it end?

How is Sonnen the only answer for 151? He is comming off a loss, just moved up weight class and is more known for his prefight hype then entertaining fights.

Jones’ brother plays for the Ravens.

Sonnen/Silva was the first MMA fight I’ve watched. Sonnen looked like he felt he was as naked as Dolly Parton without her wigs once he was out of his wrestling element in that fight.

Everybody else who is a sort of a contender just fought on UFC on Fox, AND Jones has already kicked all of their asses.

Another brother was drafted by the Patriots.

I wonder if Dana is trying to prove something to JJ by cancelling. Recently, all Jones talks about is who he should and shouldn’t fight. Can’t stand that. You’re a fighter. You fight whose in front of you.

Excuse me…why are we giving a guy shit for NOT wanting to DEFEND HIS TITLE against a guy on eight days notice? Jesus Christ, I’m reading comments on the MMA site Gannett owns and it’s fucking internet tough guy central.
Holy God, grow a fucking brain, you Ed Hardy buying mother fuckers. Bones ain’t pulling a Ric Flair and ducking a guy for months on end. He’s opting to not fight after the guy he was SUPPOSED to fight bailed at the last minute due to injury, and the boss wants to throw somebody in on eight days notice. This is nuts.
Hey, Chael Sonnen is a tough fucking guy. Very likable. I’d love to see him fight Jon Jones. But on 8 days rest? GTFO, Dana White.

For the first time ever I’m sticking up for Jones on this one. Why is Sonnen deserving of back to back title shots and in a division he hasn’t fought in in years. All the sudden he gets to jump from Griffin to a title shot all because he has a mouth and can sell some ppv’s? Maybe this will teach Dana to stop putting together cards with one great main event and a bunch of weak fights that no one is willing to pay for.
