Sacramento Kings Moving to Virginia Beach?
The Sacramento Kings, who nearly moved to Anaheim last year, are reportedly in serious talks to move across the country to Virginia Beach. Here’s a report from the Hampton Roads Business Journal:
The owners of the Sacramento Kings, an NBA franchise, and officials from Philadelphia-based Comcast-Spectacor are expected to be in Virginia Beach Tuesday to propose moving the team to the resort city and for Comcast to help build and lease a new pro sports arena.
Media giant Comcast will guarantee a 25-year lease on a new arena, supposedly for naming rights and for broadcasting the games, sources said. Comcast owns NBC and Global Spectrum, which operates arenas and stadiums across the country including the Ted Constant Convocation Center at Old Dominion University.
City officials and the Maloof family are expected to announce Wednesday, Aug. 29, that the Kings will land in Virginia Beach, sources said.
Let’s remember – the Kings came so close to moving to Anaheim that announcers cried on the final game of the 2010-2011 season. And as recently as February, the team had framework in place to stay in Cow Town.

I have been to the restaurant in Virginia Beach where Patrick Dennehey left his car. I think it’s called Hot Tuna. Anyways, there was a really sweet cover band that played 90′s rock when i was there. Good times all around.

This would be cool. Basketball is huge in Tidewater…but is there enough money out there to support a team?
Also, where would other teams fly into? Richmond? That’s gotta be the furthest drive from an airport to a stadium. Or maybe they just charter a jet right into the small beach airport?

Chris Kluwe on Deadspin commentators:
The community of commentators gargles donkey dick. Every time I scroll down to the comments section of a Deadspin article I feel like I’ve just tuned into an episode of Sesame Street where The Count has suffered a debilitating stroke. “Plus one. Ha… ha… ha… Plus one. Ha… ha… ha… Plus one. ” What the hell are you paint-huffing work dodgers counting up to anyways? The number of times you can cram a fistful of Cheetohs into your slobbering gullet as you furiously masturbate to My Little Brony porn? The chance that you’ll die alone, sad and miserable, with only a legacy of failure and disgrace to mark all the perfectly good oxygen you wasted? Stop fucking counting. It’s giving me the creeps. Oh, and just a heads up: None of your witty comments are remotely witty. In fact, every time you post, the corpse of Samuel Clemens spins in his grave and screams, “YOU BUNCH OF STUPID FUCKS ARE RUINING AMERICA.”
August 23rd, 2012 at 1:56 PM
does anyone who’s been to Va Beach think that place can support an NBA team?
i sure don’t.
August 23rd, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Spencer, I am disheartened that you didn’t pick up on the Randy Newman reference.
/ UNT @ LSU, nine days away!
August 23rd, 2012 at 1:58 PM
The Hornets looked at that area before they moved to New Orleans, IIRC.
With Hampton Roads included, I think it’s a sizeable metro area and TV market. The market might extend into parts of the Carolinas as well.
August 23rd, 2012 at 1:59 PM
The city of Virginia Beach itself couldn’t but remember that there are a couple million people in Hampton Roads as a whole. You’ve got VB, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, and Suffolk all down there.
August 23rd, 2012 at 1:59 PM
VA Beach? Having lived there for quite a few years it hardly seems like it would be any better than their current location.
Hell half the population is currently overseas at war.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:00 PM
That’s what I’m wondering. The three military bases may be enough to support it- I mean, those people are stuck there in the winter with absolutely nothing to do (unless you enjoy Colonial Williamsburg). But other than that, it’s not exactly a wealthy area.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:01 PM
How far to Pierce’s Pit BBQ
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:02 PM
You know, that would be a perfect pasttime for a rich but misguided young man like James Harden. He should seek an immediate trade there from wicked big town Oklahoma City and all its temptations.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:02 PM
Nice embellishment.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Only been there once when I was 12. Had to get a couple stiches after a seashell sliced my foot after getting crushed by a wave. So fuck Virginia Beach.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Of course, I’m not saying I’ll cheer for the Virginia Beach Vandals/Vampires/Vipers(I used this in Madden create-a-team)/Victory/Valkyries/Vas Deferens.
The Maloofs are still the owners right? Then no, I’ll probably stick to my guns and wait for the Wizards to change their name back to the Bullets (I swore I’d become a DC fan if they changed the colors and name back to those of the Bullets).
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:04 PM
I mean, those people are stuck there in the winter with absolutely nothing to do (unless you enjoy Colonial Williamsburg).
Um, get deployed, get paid jack shit, get deployed again.

TBLers know the only name for this relocated franchise is the Virginia Beach Is For Lovers.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Virginia Beach only 10-20 miles next to Norfolk. Those two areas combined has to be bigger than a Salt Lake City or Sacramento, right?

The market might extend into parts of the Carolinas as well.
if it was closer to charlotte or raleigh, maybe. but rocky mount, obx, and wilmington aren’t exactly contributing much.
someone touched on it already: the military presence may be enough, but there’s a HUGE decline in wealth after that.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:11 PM
Top 10 drunkest I’ve ever been was at a sports bar in VA Beach during opening weekend of colelge football. I remember 2 things, Pitt’s embarrassing loss to Bowling Green and Clemson getting bent over by Alabama.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Metro Hampton Roads is bigger than Salt Lake City but I don’t it’s bigger than metro Sacramento.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:13 PM
the military presence may be enough
I doubt that, E4 and below aren’t drawing a whole lot of disposable income and they way out number E5 and above. Plus the locals aren’t exactly wealthy like say, Hilton Head locals – lots of retired and summer only people.

August 23rd, 2012 at 10:15 PM
Hampton Roads is the largest Metro area in the country without a major league sports team in the big 4 sports. Between the retired military, shipyard workers, contractors, and Sentara Hospital system worker, they can support a team down there. Plus the fact that Richmond is an hour and change away, they’d be fine.
August 23rd, 2012 at 10:17 PM
The first step is somehow getting the team out of the Maloofs’ hands.
