If they hated Americans so much, why did they go see Top Gun?

Same reason everyone everywhere goes to see American movies — they’re usually better than whatever that country is cranking out, if they’re cranking out anything.
Scottish film industry at that time consisted of Bill Forsyth and nothing else.
I remember walking down the Champs-Elysees that same fall, and all the cinemas were showing American movies. There was a huge poster for Stallone’s Cobra – “Le crime est un poison. Voici, l’antidote.”

Single angriest person I’ve ever met was a guy from Guam who hung out at one of the same bars I did in Tokyo, little hole in the wall near the MoD called Ta Bar. Dude hated Americans, and did not hesitate to let you know it.
Except for some reason he took a shining to me. He’d get toasted and talk my ear off about how he hated Americans, except for me, because I was an OK guy.

Ya know, in the times I went TDY, I enjoyed it. Lots of WWII history, the locals were pretty cool. Because of a few troops assaulting the locals, everyone else had to toe the line pretty severely.
