9. Miami University of Ohio, Oxford
Laughable. Average blue blood coversation at Miami:
Bro 1. Aww man. The Saab my parents gave me is having issues. It’s in the shop.
Bro 2. You’re parents are paying for that though, right?
Bro 1. Of course – I put it on their Amex, but now we have to drive this 2011 Mustang to the party instead.
Bro 2. Its okay man, this party will be dope.
Also applicable for Xavier students.

Also, watched Girl with the Dragon Tattoo last night. That freaky chick was hawt.

9. Miami University of Ohio, Oxford
I went to some frat party through friends of friends at Miami during my time at tOSU. It lived up to all stereotypes: hot girls, dbag guys, money everywhere. I think I have mentioned this before, but I’ll say it again — the urban legend was that the female dorms in Oxford had to get piping redone regularly because there was such a rampant bulima problem that the stomach acid at away at the pipes.
August 21st, 2012 at 8:49 AM
I would put up a bunch of links about how airlines are buying tens of thousands of iPads to replace flight books. But I’m lazy. Just google “United + iPads.” The iPad is being integrated heavily within the corporate structure, and have seen several restaurants move to iPad wine lists as well.
August 21st, 2012 at 8:49 AM

Boston announced what everyone feared: Carl Crawford will have Tommy John surgery
He was playing well since coming off the DL. Another setback. An MVP seems the only way to win the fans over now.
Great Roundup, Jason. Always felt bad for Stallworth, but things always happen for a reason.

Hahah — I went to the BG\NIU game, first ever gameday at a non BCS school. I stormed the field and just stood there. To say I lacked interest was an understatement.

that’s some funny shit.
August 21st, 2012 at 8:55 AM
Hillary Swank is NOT hot and Calvin Johnson will suffer the fate of the Madden Curse. I could’ve kept him for a 1st round pick but decided against it for that reason.
August 21st, 2012 at 8:55 AM
I recall that the Miami sororities are very destructive around Cincinnati. They tore up a clubhouse at a golf course and a restraunt downtown.
Then they went home to puke.
August 21st, 2012 at 8:56 AM
Heard this same urban legend when I was an undergrad about 100 years ago, but it was about the University of Delaware women’s dorms.
August 21st, 2012 at 8:56 AM
John Lackey is wayyyy worse than either Zito or Crawford.

August 21st, 2012 at 9:00 AM
Speaking of party schools — the worst is when someone says something like “Playboy released there top 10 party schools but x school is not included because they don’t include professionals” — that always irked me. Then again, I remember seeing this on AIM regularly so that could cloud my judgement.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:00 AM
which only makes me more angry that i have to “turn off” my bose noise cancelling headphones and i can’t listen to music during takeoff or landing since my classic ipod will clearly send off too many signals while in coach that would interfere with the instruments in the cockpit.

It’s everywhere. My wife is a teacher and she is considering getting one because the school is moving to a system where they can handle all their attendance among other things on it. Same with my job. It’s a tablet world.

Not sure how Iowa, Illinois, and Penn St are ranked higher than Wisconsin. I went to almost every Big Ten campus for away Purdue football games, and Wisconsin was the best experience by far. Great bar scene and college football atmosphere.

Re: Lo Wood
Does this mean Notre Dame wins 7 games instead of 8?
August 21st, 2012 at 9:12 AM
right now it’s an iPad world, all the other tablets are just living in it.
However, if the windows 8 tablets are any good, Apple’s dominance will start to slip.
There’s only so many iPads a company can continually purchase, system integration and future changes to the iOS could push companies to a standard like Windows 8.
that won’t hurt apple at all since they are a consumer company, not a commercial hardware company, and have no interest in catering to the commercial sector.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:12 AM
It’s really a shame Mel went beserk (or was exposed). Braveheart, Passion of the Christ, and Apacalypto were good movies way outside the industry norm.

Hilary Swank is nasty.

August 21st, 2012 at 9:19 AM
I think you’re going to start to see Android and Windows eat away at the iPad just like they did with the iPhone. Apple hasn’t come out with a new idea in years. The new iPad came with a better screen. That’s it. Even in the cult of Apple, people won’t continue to shell out $500 bucks a year for a marginally better product.
Even with Apple eventually getting into the game, I think you’re going to see a lot of people flocking to 7-inch tablets. Galaxy Nexus, Fire, Nook — these are all much more affordable and better for personal use than an iPad.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:19 AM
also, more companies are looking into “bring your own device”, the big problem there is security. Whatever platform answers that question while making it easy to integrate will get the “gold star” from the IT department
August 21st, 2012 at 9:19 AM
No disagreeing, but couldn’t the same be said for consumers and the iphone. But when the next one comes out with 2 upgrades that could have been made on the previous version the sheep will line up.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:19 AM

The same Windows 8 that everyone is claiming is an outright disaster and will be a bigger flop than Vista? Considering most corporations are just now rolling out Windows 7 (my company is still primarily on XP), I highly doubt any Windows 8 tablets will succeed. The iPad is like the iPod, anything else will struggle to get any marketshare or acceptance.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:20 AM
was there as well…one of my top 3 college events. I don’t think there was a sober student there that day
August 21st, 2012 at 9:21 AM
consumers are different, they don’t have to defend their budgetary spend to a CIO, CEO or CFO as to why they spent $250k last year for iPads and just spent another $250k this year for the new version.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Where are you seeing that Windows 8 is a disaster? Reviews have been outstanding, particularly for their Metro UI which is what will run on the tablets.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:23 AM
This is true.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:23 AM
All of this. The entire point of Windows 8 is for Microsoft to get into the tablet market. Lots of corporate enterprise shops are watching this one, knowing full well, they won’t be able to keep tablets out of the enterprise much longer.
Don’t underestimate the cult of Apple. Regardless of the utility of their products, people just simply like Apple and their brand.

Dude took some blunt trauma to the face.

August 21st, 2012 at 9:26 AM
there’s also a massive, massive push the tech companies with windows 8 tablets are making in the IT sector from the big tech resellers/partners.
Windows 8 on a laptop or desktop may not be great since, but on a tablet the windows platform could make it much easier for IT departments to integrate into their current environment without making many changes to what they are currently doing.

I don’t think MS is looking to replace your desktop OS right now. Windows 8 is meant as an entry point into the tablet market. I don’t think they care how many enterprises adopt it for their desktops.

I’m surprised Android isn’t trying to become more compatible with enterprise servers, particularly given their open source platform. iPhones are becoming standard at our company but the IT guys hate em. There just isn’t a better alternative right now.

How about a nice 12 year return chart including reinvested earnings and buybacks?
August 21st, 2012 at 9:32 AM
FWIW, my sister-in-law is exactly the consumer Apple targets; wealthy and devoted to Apple. But even she said that she’s considering the Google tablet because of the more portable size and the new iPad doesn’t justify the cost. However, she did readily acknowledge that if Apple comes out with a smaller iPad like rumored, she’d probably go that route.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:32 AM
Yeah, me too. Fragmentation across devices makes it really difficult for IT departments to achieve standardization. I’m always amazed Google doesn’t do more to rein that in. Then I see that they own 60 percent of the smartphone market and growing, and I shut up.

If Windows 8 tanks, then yes he led them down the shitter, but seeing as how Windows 8 is the most innovation MS has done in years i completely disagree that he’s leading them down the shitter right now.
Sure, he’s not as charismatic as Steve Jobs was when giving keynotes, but he’s doing the right thing with Win8
August 21st, 2012 at 9:33 AM
That’s weird, you’re always leading the fight on here. I like Apple, I have an Ipod, but I think it’s great that other alternatives to the Ipad are breaking into the market. It’s horribly overpriced.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:33 AM
b/c we sympathize with Walt.
Do we, at this point? This season more than any I can say I really don’t.

I kinda think it’s the actress. I was watching Deadwood earlier this year and she still had a look on her face like she hasn’t been fucked in years for every scene she was in. Liquidate her.

A lot of the dislike for Skylar White is because she’s been the closest person to Walt and been able to put him in some bad spots (ex. I.F.T.). Most of us like Walt, so we don’t like when someone effs with his shit.
Anna Gunn is a very good actress and has done a fine job playing the emotional ups and downs expected of any significant other in her situation.
If you hate Skylar White the same way you hate Lori Grimes or even Kate Austen, then you should probably stop watching TV.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:38 AM

Said this before, I’ll say it again — fuck Best Buy. They only survived this long by ripping off their customers left and right with $90 HDMI cables and $100 camera accessories. They didn’t innovate, failed to react quickly to e-commerce, and built their entire business around low-margin items like televisions that disappeared when the economy went off a cliff.
Enjoy being an Amazon showroom, Best Buy.

August 21st, 2012 at 9:41 AM
I know this has been touched on before, but in Season 1 (and in some episodes after that), Skyler and the other family members had a unique way of emasculating or underestimating Walt just enough such that you begin to sympathize more with Walt and less with….well….everyone else…Skyler, her sister, Hank, etc.
August 21st, 2012 at 9:41 AM
As someone who worked part-time sales in Best Buy’s home theater dept in 2005-06, I agree with all of this. The profit was made on accessories and service plans, which were certainly useful for anyone dropping $2-4K on a TV. But those TVs are less expensive now and made much better, so the service plans aren’t as useful. The accessories’ prices have dropped with the TV prices.

i get the feeling we are just used to gas never going below 3.50/gal again, give or take the area you live in. i was happy on our roadtrip to see 3.70 in rural places, then as we neared chicago it shot up to 4.15

I got a 37-inch LG LCD 720P for like $1,300 on employee discount; it retailed around $2K. I’ve never had a problem; great TV six years later. Today, $1,300 retail will get you a 50-inch 1080P. Quite a change in the market over the past few years.

Flatpanels have reached a near saturation point. And because they’re increasingly well made and durable, there’s no need to buy replacements. CDs are dinosaurs. BDs are purchased off Amazon. Other than appliances — a highly competitive marketplace — I’m not sure what Best Buy offers other than untrained, moronic salespeople?

My parents were in the market for a TV a few years back. Went along parents to make sure they didn’t get ripped off. Guy tried telling them that they needed a $120 gold-plated HDMI cable to ensure a true 1080p signal. Told the guy to stop talking, called HHGregg right in front of him and asked if they’d price-match the model number. They said yes, we went across the street and bought it from them. I then drove back to Best Buy, found the salesman, showed him the receipt, and told him that his lie about the HDMI cable cost them the sale.
I know the guy was probably just regurgitating his training or too stupid to know how wrong he was, but I didn’t care.
Fuck Best Buy.

Consumer Reports just lacks context when comparing cars and electronics.
comparing high end sports cars with low end, and the low end wins out purely b/c of gas mileage.

That last part sums it up. That blatant-rip-off sales technique has a short shelf life. Word gets out and people get more knowledgeable. Kind of like how they used to charge $27 to install a program. $27 to put in a CD and click “Next” three times. Fuck Best Buy.
August 21st, 2012 at 10:04 AM
They can’t. Most e-commerce divisions require a much lower margin than brick and mortar retailers. Even ecomm divisions from the same parent company.
August 21st, 2012 at 10:04 AM
The fact that you had to go with your parents to make sure they didn’t get screwed isn’t helping this thesis. Most people are not tech savvy when buying anything electronics related.

i figured out early on in selling TV’s that you only attempt to sell that shit to the people who fit the bill, they typically don’t mention anything about finding a TV in a certain price range, they don’t have anything picked out before hand, and they don’t contradict you during your pitch.
in other words, suckers.
i did catch my store manager trying to sneak cables on an older couples order once, lost all respect for him at that point.

That and the economy’s slow climb which means disposable income has faded. It used to be I’d buy a DVD for $10 as opposed to just renting it for $6. Now, I pay the $1 Redbox fee. I’ve kept my old iPod and just back-up my iTunes account. If there’s a videogame I like, I’ll scour the interwebz for the cheapest price.
So since there’s little I need, I don’t go in there and browse. Extrapolate that to a few million guys and there you go.

There were salesmen like me, who was helpful and tried to set people up with what they were looking for and what worked best for them. Then there were assholes like 2/3 of my department who stretched the truth and downright lied (ex. the Consumer Reports line) for a sale. Even though we were non-commissioned salesmen. There are suckers everywhere and as many snakes to take advantage of them.

I think we were in the same boat. I never cleared that much money, but I didn’t care about the “margin” of a sale. i was lookign at putters and eavesdropping on a salesman giving someone advice about what putters would suit him. the customer said he would miss putts left frequently, common with high MOI mallet putters and full offset putters (anser style). salesman walks away, i talk to the guy, give him an odyssey with less loft and half-shaft offset that was $100 cheaper than the ones the salesman was giving him, and he made five straight. who woulda thunk a properly fitting putter would make a difference? well…i should hope a salesman, but im naive.
i blame marketing and advertising.

The weekend should be interesting, I won my flight last year, (First Flight; 6 -12 hcp) due to some decent play and some good fortune, See its a 2 day event, last year the second day was rain delayed to the following week and two of the top 5 had prior commitments. But I played well, shot 80-80. Which was the two best consecutive days I had last year. So I had that going for me. My handicap as of last update was my all time low (7.7) but since then have not been able to break 83. Cannot get off the tee. Very frustrating, so I am going to try a few days away to see if that helps. Sorry for the humblebrag.

No consistency….I hit a draw, usually. now I’m fading, duck hooks, blah blah. No confidence at address that I have any clue what the ball will do. Have tried adjusting grip, feet, slowwwwing down. I may hit a good one, yet I might hit shit. Definitely have a weight shift issue, as I can feel hips way out in front sometimes. Most of it is in my head, confidence shot. Thinking a little time away can’t hurt. Funny game, 78 on Saturday, thought I had it licked, followed with 86 Sunday and 88 Monday. Not licked.

But you should see me at the range
Long and straight. …..Long walk from range to the first tee. All confidence literally disappears. But I love that damned game. Do you play at all during the week?
