Augusta National Admits First Two Women – Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore
Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore have become the first two female members of Augusta National Golf Club, the home of the Masters. Rice, the former Secretary of State is also Augusta’s first Cleveland Browns fan. Moore is the vice president of a private investment company. Augusta Chairman Billy Payne seemed pleased to welcome women into Augusta. Via USA Today:
“These accomplished women share our passion for the game of golf and both are well known and respected by our membership. It will be a proud moment when we present Condoleezza and Darla their Green Jackets when the Club opens this fall.
“This is a significant and positive time in our Club’s history and, on behalf of our membership, I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome them and all of our new members into the Augusta National family.”
Let’s all welcome Augusta into the 21st Century. [USA Today]

5-hour long rounds for everyone!
August 20th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
huzzah!
i dont think augusta deserved the criticism since it’s their members’ private property, but glad to see them do the ethical thing and let female members in.
also…call me, condi.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Because all the way back in the 1990′s those bitches were slaving over a stove and not allowed to vote, right?
August 20th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Fucking A this.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I’ve always been amazed at how upset people get over a private course choosing who they want to and/or don’t want to admit.

playing devil’s advocate…im always amazed that people who play golf enough to treat it like an investment asset could possibly be exclusionary when they know damn well the golf ball don’t care who you are.
the golf ball’s the ultimate judge…if you don’t want black people or chicks or whomever in your club, you’re being treasonous against the game itself.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
This better not mean they’re going to have more commercials on their Masters broadcasts.
The 21st Century meaning the century where we ignore the rights of private citizens acting legally on private property?
August 20th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
the golf ball’s the ultimate judge…if you don’t want black people or chicks or whomever in your club, you’re being treasonous against the game itself.
Someone’s been smoking Carl Spackler’s blend of Kentucky Bluegrass and Northern California Sensamilla.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
I don’t know why Augusta got the backlash- that should have been directed squarely at the PGA.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Rich people: “Why is everyone so upset about the economy and wanting handouts, if you work hard, you’ll be fine!”
White people: “Why is everyone so uspet about racism, it doesn’t really exist any more”
Male people: “Women get paid just as much as men and have the same opportunities we have”

August 20th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
does this mean all members at Augusta will shave 10 strokes off their games now that they’ve admitted a black chick?
August 20th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
a million times this.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:38 AM

August 20th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
That isn’t the case though. Because if the golf ball don’t lie, and the golf ball could talk, it would tell a lot of people to get the F off the course.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Your assumption isn’t even close. More like, Guy who isn’t bothered by the choices of the members of a private golf course.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
hey, lemme borrow your car. YOU ASSHOLE, WHY CAN’T I BORROW YOUR CAR? YOU SHOULD LET ME BORROW YOUR CAR BECAUSE I WANT IT.

For the Aususta membership issue, it’s odd that nobody went after the players. The club’s policies were stated and legal. The players were the ones that could have boycotted. I always felt that wrath was mis-directed.

Then how can you play it as it lies? Answer that, Dan Jenkins!
August 20th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Its incredible that the most famous golf course in America was allowed to be blatantly sexist until today, and no one cared.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Fat chance. Every one of those players has been stuck behind Nancy Rottencrotch and her foursome hitting their 5th, 6th, 7th shots into the short par-4 12th after the first 11 holes took them 3 1/2 hours.

Trim your rough!
August 20th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Anyway, I thought Augusta already had a female member.
Oh, that’s right, Mickeltits is only an honorary member.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
I took 3 weeks off the game for VAC and some work & personal matters. Went out on FRI and shot my handicap (14) despite being 7 over after 3 holes. Felt good. Look to play twice this week.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
they’re here for a tournament, not to change a club’s policy. that’s retarded.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Sounds like a Mexican.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
I understand it fine. I just don’t understand how no one forced the issue. Had Augusta not allowed black members I can’t imagine that policy would have remained in place this long.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Props to Augusta for doing this on their own terms/timing.

yes, they are pioneers in their acceptance of minorities. we should all strive to follow their example.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
people cared, just not the people in charge. what part of private club do you not understand? I don’t think many people agreed with it, but many people aren’t members either, just kind of how it works.

This reminds me of the time Reagan. at a White House reception for mayors from around the country, walked up to a guy and said, “How are you, Mr. Mayor? I’m glad to meet you. How are things in your city?”
The guy was Samuel Pierce, Reagan’s HUD secretary and only black cabinet member.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Augusta has been hiring black folks for years, so that’s just ridiculous.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
They don’t deserve criticism for exercising their right as a private athletic club. Still don’t see this outrage for Butler, Black Sheep, Bob O’Link & Old Elm which are all still male only clubs in the Chicagoland area.
Was unaware we had so many professional golfers here who were personally affected by this.

The Associate Press article also states that Condi Rice was put on the grounds comittee. In their first meeting last month, Rice strongly advocated that Augusta National attack Atlanta Athletic Club and nearby Augusta Country Club do their stockpiling of fertilizers and other potential WMD components.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
They don’t deserve credit for anything here. That’s like patting yourself on the back for hiring a black guy.
true, but they also had every right as a private club to do what the hell they want.

when they host an annual national tournament then i’m sure they will get the attention Augusta has received.
private golf club + national exposure + spotlight = different public perceptions and expectations.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
can i get into a school like grambling, alcorn state? really, i have always wondered if that would work.
Yes. Grambling had a white quarterback a few years ago.

IBM’s a huge sponsor of the US Open, right?
IBM CEOs usually get a membership to Augusta.
Current IBM CEO is a woman.
They had to start off with some women and not extend membership 1st to said CEO.

Yes. But the comment did in fact bring that story to mind.

Bunch of low income nobodies. Are these morons getting dumber or just louder?
August 20th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
and they also could have said, you know what? We don’t like this attention, we have no plans to change our ways, let someone else host the masters and we’ll keep this little slice of heave we call the 1950′s to ourselves.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:04 PM

August 20th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Sounds like unfair expectations to me. They exercised a right because it’s private property. Is it sexist? Hell yeah it is. Are they perfectly within their rights to do? Sure are!
Tell me again how this affects you? Oh that’s right. It doesn’t in the least. I’m not a member at Augusta either. It’s because I’m not a good golfer, not because of my gender or ethnicity.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
My slice makes me heave, too.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
dont wanna jinx it.
you should see how many white kids are in the HBCU golf events…it’s cringe inducing.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
and they also could have said, you know what? We don’t like this attention, we have no plans to change our ways, let someone else host the masters and we’ll keep this little slice of heave we call the 1950′s to ourselves.
seems fair.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Depends on the angle of my monitor.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
I think it’s really becaue you’re a Browns fan. Also because you’re not rich and prefer something more weedilicious to a post-round Manhattan.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Why cringe-inducing? Schools want golf teams (perhaps to meet NCAA mandates on number of sports), recruit best players they can find. Those are the players they found.
Jackson State, IIRC, has a pretty decent team.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
because these white kids play in something called “the minority collegiate golf championship.”
August 20th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Reasons you are not a member at Augusta.
1. Money
2. Power
3. Money
4. Influence
5. Money
6. Money
7. Handicap
August 20th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
really has nothing to do with it. warren buffett and bill gates play matches and neither break 100 regularly.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
oh shit, i forgot, we can only comment on things and have opinions on TBL when the story directly affects us.
unfair expectations? you get in the public spotlight and the expectations change. simple fact. private citizens/private organizations are held to a higher standard in the public eye.
sure, they can do what they want, it’s their right, but unfortunately anyone who is arguing for their rights to do what they want should recognize being a private entity in the public spotlight carries different public perceptions.
that’s what i’m saying, it’s not as simple as just saying, they can do what they want.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
I know, that’s my point. But I got tired of typing the word money.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Technically, they’re minorities on their campuses. Ipso facto …
Good to know there is at least one thing in life I surpass these guys at.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Lots of Libertarians up in this piece.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
it is as simple as that…unless the players refuse to play, CBS refuses to broadcast, and then every other network follows suit, the club has all the leverage.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
sure, they can do what they want, it’s their right, but unfortunately anyone who is arguing for their rights to do what they want should recognize being a private entity in the public spotlight carries different public perceptions.
The crux of this seems to be whether or not the rights of a private club are held above the public perception of egalitarianism we all like to believe exists. I lean, personally, towards yes.
Picketing Augusta National has always missed the point. If individuals felt truly outraged that a major PGA event is held at a place that, until today, restricted membership only to men, then the picketing should have taken place at PGA Headquarters.
Outrage at a private club’s policies, so long as they are within the law, reeks of misdirected populist fervor.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Lots of Libertarians up in this piece.
The recognition of the sacrosanct nature of personal property comes straight from John Locke. Libertarianism is the simply the extreme form of this belief.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Marxism and Libertarianism would both work wonders in a Utopia. Application in the real world… not so much.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
Marxism and Libertarianism would both work wonders in a Utopia. Application in the real world… not so much.
Agreed.

it counts towards the PGA/euro/japan tour money list, but it’s not affiliated with any of em past that. kinda like how the us open is a usga event, not a PGA Tour one.
Ok, well the point still remains.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
it doesn’t…the club has all the say regarding the tournament from tv rights to concessions.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
the school that won the women’s minority golf championship had all whites on their golf team.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
but that doesn’t make their public perception go away.
i agree, private citizens and clubs can do what they want. but as soon as you get into the public spotlight, all bets are off in terms of what your expectations are. that’s why a different standard is applied to them than other clubs who aren’t in the public spotlight
August 20th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
tiger’s coach Foley went to one of the minority schools on a partial golf scholly, I think
August 20th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
it doesn’t…the club has all the say regarding the tournament from tv rights to concessions.
I was talking about the other point.
But since you said that, let me ask you this: how did this situation come about? I assume that there was a contract signed between the two at some point and that there is an end to that contract. Yes?
August 20th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
A true libertarian would advocate for, at minimum, the repeal of the 14th Amendment. God bless Rand Paul.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
just wait til one of them beats a member
/nice word choice i know
August 20th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
A true libertarian would advocate for, at minimum, the repeal of all amendments, including the bill of rights.
Because if the founding fathers really wanted that for us, they would have put it in the constitution!
August 20th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
CBS gives them more leeway so they can get the rights in future negotiations.
but the tournament itself is an invitational held by the club and it’s tradition sets it apart from other similar types of tourneys. the green jacket mafia sure knows how to use the leverage they get.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Now you’re confusing Liberterians with Constitutionalists. Get your fundamentalists straight.
August 20th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Ah, I was just poking the hornets’ nest.
August 20th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
That, too. I was getting at getting rid of the notion of a “place of public accomodation.” People should be free to discriminate at will. After all, “the market” will sort it out.
August 20th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Also, get rid of the Commerce Clause.
August 20th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
