Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2012 NFL Preview
When I look for sleepers in the NFL, here are my three keys:
1) How is the schedule?
Very favorable. Of their first 10 games, only two opponents (Giants, Saints) reached the playoffs last year. If you go simply by last year’s record, the Bucs face the 24th easiest schedule in the NFL. Now let’s not go overboard – they do face Cam Newton, Eli Manning and Tony Romo in the first three weeks. That being said, if the Bucs are able to open 2-2, the next seven games could net five wins. Four games at home and road trips to awful Minnesota, mediocre Oakland and Carolina. Yes, I will be taking the “over” on wins for Tampa Bay (I’ve seen six). I’m not putting much stock in the team quitting last year on stats-hater Raheem Morris (curb stomped in the final 10 games by an average of 18.5 ppg).
2) Did the team improve in the offseason?
Few teams in the NFL had as much success in the draft and free agency as the Bucs. They snapped up an elite receiver in Vincent Jackson (5 years, $55 million), a top-tier offensive lineman in Carl Nicks from rival New Orleans (5 years, $47.5 million), and an upgrade at cornerback in Eric Wright (5 years, $37.5 million). In the first two rounds of the draft, the Bucs landed three starters in safety Mark Barron, running back Doug Martin and linebacker LaVonte David.
So that’s six new starters and a new head coach (Greg Schiano after they couldn’t land Chip Kelly).
3) Do they have any shot in the division?
New Orleans has been decimated by the loss of its coach and a few players due to Bountygate. Everyone loves the Panthers, but what if the league had a year to adjust to Cam, and is ready for his sophomore season? I’ve never been a believer in Atlanta, and you know I don’t love Matt Ryan or Mike Smith. The Bucs are obviously the longest shot to win the division, but here’s something to remember – over the last nine years in the NFL, a team has gone from last place to 1st place.
Ok, now that I’ve rambled in a far too positive manner about a 4-win team that gave up the most points in the NFL last season (494). Legit questions: Is Josh Freeman going to throw 22 picks again? What if Doug Martin isn’t capable of 15-20 carries? Will preseason optimism be strangled by a 0-3 start? Those young linebackers … seriously?
Some more positive spin for the Bucs:
* Let’s say Gerald McCoy is finally injury free. The former 1st round pick will be pivotal to stopping the run (Tampa was last in that category: 156 ypg).
* Jim Harbaugh busted the college-to-NFL coaching myth, why can’t Schiano?
* Aqib Talib and Eric Wright stay out of handcuffs, and buoyed by Barron, Tampa’s secondary goes from horrendous to respectable.
* Mike Williams, who looks like a real keeper from Syracuse, is an awesome No. 2 to Vincent Jackson.
| Sun. | Sept. 9 | CAROLINA | 4:15 PM | Win |
| Sun. | Sept. 16 | at N.Y. Giants | 1:00 PM | Loss |
| Sun. | Sept. 23 | at Dallas | 1:00 PM | Loss |
| Sun. | Sept. 30 | WASHINGTON | 4:15 PM | Win |
| Sun. | Oct. 7 | Bye Week | ||
| Sun. | Oct. 14 | KANSAS CITY | 1:00 PM | Win |
| Sun. | Oct. 21 | NEW ORLEANS | 1:00 PM | Win |
| Thurs. | Oct. 25 | at Minnesota | 8:30 PM | Win |
| Sun. | Nov. 4 | at Oakland | 4:05 PM | Loss |
| Sun. | Nov. 11 | SAN DIEGO | 1:00 PM | Loss |
| Sun. | Nov. 18 | at Carolina | 1:00 PM | Loss |
| Sun. | Nov. 25 | ATLANTA | 1:00 PM | Win |
| Sun. | Dec. 2 | at Denver | 4:05 PM | Win |
| Sun. | Dec. 9 | PHILADELPHIA | 1:00 PM | Loss |
| Sun. | Dec. 16 | at New Orleans | 1:00 PM | Loss |
| Sun. | Dec. 23 | ST. LOUIS | 1:00 PM | Win |
| Sun. | Dec. 30 | at Atlanta | 1:00 PM | Loss |
I’ve got Tampa going 8-8 and narrowly missing the playoffs. Why do I have Tampa winning at Denver? Frankly, I’m not sure Peyton Manning will make it to December.

He was pretty productive in SD. I hate that he left. If he wasn’t elite, he was close.

Everyone loves the Panthers,
Everyone loves Cam. The rest of that team stinks.
August 17th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
They will beat San Diego. West Coast team playing the early game on the East Coast.
I’d flip the Denver and Philadelphia results.

He was and I loved him. That ship has sailed I think.

There going to be a preview for each NFL team?
August 17th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Hope that ship springs a leak (just kidding).
OBTW – True Lies is on FMC. The “Jamie Lee Curtis in a LBD” scene is on. Good golly, miss Molly.

* Jim Harbaugh busted the college-to-NFL coaching myth, why can’t Schiano?
Usually, it is excellent coaches that make the jump. Not 4th place coaches in the Big East. On the upside, IIRC, he was pretty good in low-tier bowl games.

curb stomped
i believe i introduced this phrase here, long, long ago.

Beware of those Thursday night road games. But I agree, this team will mak ea big improvement. I think the upgrade from the worst safeties in the league to Barron will be a big help for that defense, esp against the run. And I think Freeman makes the “leap” this year. Adding veterans V-Jax and Nicks will go a long way for the culture of the team. I say 10-6 and a wild card berth.

after, but before it was cool reference caddie shack.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
To me, it’s all about their running attack. If Blount has a monster year, then Freeman will get time to throw to Jackson and the defense will be rested and ready to attack. If the running attack sputters, they won’t be better than .500.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
Yeah kc….her bday was july 30 mine aug12 and just so happened we needed renewing The same year. I sent the checks but not til last week. I was lucky to get here on my bday so i could at least buy some

Hiding in our burrows to avoid the hammer.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Today’s point of sale systems will flag anything wrong with a license when tge barcode is scanned so onlt a manager can override. It’s funny not really that i did a story on this exact thing a month ago
August 17th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Where in the hell is everyone today? Did they all go the route of Butters?
Everyone probably gave up after some of the posts this morning. Like the fiftythhundred Call Me Maybe post.
Walking Underwear – Oh yeah. I forgot not everyone is old like me. I get carded maybe once a month.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Butters made a comment in the roundup today. Early

Walking Underwear – Oh yeah. I forgot not everyone is old like me. I get carded maybe once a month.
Wait. You are my age. They scan your DL in order to buy booze?
August 17th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
The Italians are willing to go to lengths that the American will not.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Some places require carding and the pos system enforces it. So if a license is not scanned the system won’t do the sale for certain categories like Alcohol tobacco and otc drugs. I think its called the Missouri regulations
August 17th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
St. Bear -
One word.
AAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
August 17th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Agree with this, and think the Panthers will suck again this year. Defense still terrible.

USA! USA! USA!
Seriously. That is stupid.
Not as stupid as Kansas. I can’t buy Gin and Tonic in the same store. Gin from the liquor store. Tonic from the party supply store that is right fucking next door owned by the same guy.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Lurking, waiting to talk baseball.
We got Yanks-Sawx this evening & NFL as well. I’ll be here when the games start.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Facists. What about people without drivers licences?
/Choose drinking over driving (your welcome)
//Use health card for ID
///Does your for profit gov’t subsidized kill you for $ companies give id?

FUCK THE YANKS AND SAWX
August 17th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
after, but before it was cool reference caddie shack.
this has never been not cool
/says “miss it Noonan” on all 7 of your 3-putts during your next round
August 17th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
I just wanna see Bobby V melt down. I’d pay to see that.
Also, some buddies and I plan to go to Coors tomorrow to see Rockies-Marlins. Yippee…?
August 17th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Soused there are other ID cards that can be scanned…work cards, pasaportes, etc
August 17th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
People who don’t drive have ID cards. Basically the same thing.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
We got Yanks-Sawx this evening & NFL as well. I’ll be here when the games start
May be joining ya.
Even I’m tired of this “hatred” between the two. It’s really just another game at this point. They probably like each other more than most teams.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
One of the most ARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! scenes in non-heist movie history.
Um, those guys were trying to steal his stereo or something right? Doesn’t that qualify American History X as a heist movie around these parts?
August 17th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
Absolutely srod. Great park and bar area
August 17th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
It’s more of a CYA against not carding people. Everyone gets carded, no one gets fined for underage sale or loses their license for a short amount of time.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
It’s The Master Race, Charlie Brown.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Also, some buddies and I plan to go to Coors tomorrow to see Rockies-Marlins. Yippee…?
Going to a MLB game is never bad…except in Cincy. Did not enjoy that park. The Red Sox may have pink hats, Philly fans have their pure evil, St. Louis has their pure family fans, but Cincy fans have no identity.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Yep. Rivalries these days seem to be more of “you threw a fastball at my head/threatened my livelihood” than geography or history.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
from the way I understand the criteria, every movie is a heist movie
August 17th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
should be plenty of good seats available. hopefully you didn’t have to pay for those tickets.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
As a Red Sox rooter, I have to sadly agree with this. The playoffs are out of reach and Bobby V is a joke of a manager. SHUT HIM DOWN.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Vez, how the hell do you let both licenses expire? Lazy ass!
August 17th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Heldover, bobby v isnt a joke of a manager. He makes some questionable moves but he’s not a joke. Know who is a joke? Guys like beckett, pedroia, and lester who have sucked big fat dick this year
August 17th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
Doesn’t that qualify American History X as a heist movie around these parts?
Only by the EIC.
It’s more of a CYA against not carding people. Everyone gets carded, no one gets fined for underage sale or loses their license for a short amount of time.
I see the point of it, I just wouldn’t like the government to know how much booze I have bought. In 40 years when I go before the death panel, I guess how much booze I have ingested will come up.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
Paul Ryan said his favourite band was Rage Against The Machine. The irony was not lost on them:
I wonder what Ryan’s favorite Rage song is? Is it the one where we condemn the genocide of Native Americans? The one lambasting American imperialism? Our cover of “Fuck the Police”? Or is it the one where we call on the people to seize the means of production? So many excellent choices to jam out to at Young Republican meetings!
Don’t mistake me, I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta “rage” in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he’s not raging against is the privileged elite he’s groveling in front of for campaign contributions.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
I love being in the ball park. Coors is pretty nice. Some second deck sections have usher service (pretty popular all over, I guess). Sit on my butt, order a beverage, someone later brings it? Me likey.
The neighborhood is pretty cool. One night last year, my son’s band played at a bar just east of Coors. Their set ended just as fireworks from the ballpark started. Nice night all around.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
I disagree completely. Especially on Lester and Pedroia. I don’t think they have sucked on purpose, and I don’t think Bobby has put them in the best position for success.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
3 beers in quote fail is not a good omen.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
There’s a difference between “ultimate responsibility” (players) and “contributing to the problems by trashing players to the media” (Bobby). Something I was complaining about in Spring Training, and something that really has affected the team, clearly.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
We plan to buy in the Rockpile. Just ’cause the ownership is out of touch doesn’t mean we should try to hustle the worker bees. I don’t mind doing my part to keep the economy going.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Agreed.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:46 PM

August 17th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Golf game rained out this morning, stuck at home watching movies on Cinemax (free this weekend). Watched Alien Resurrection for the 39th time this morning, and the scene where Ripley dunks a basketball is still one of the dumbest fucking things I’ve ever seen.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
SROD Wynkoop brewery down the road from Coors is really cool. Great beer and the female bartender upstairs working most nights is really hot.
August 17th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
SROD, I don’t think you’re gonna be happy with Meacham replacing him.
August 17th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Does he pair it with his other trademarked phrase, “Hey, Ralphie boy”?
August 17th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Unless it’s like the scene in Caddyshack, there’s no such thing as rained-out golf, just rained-out pussies scared of melting.
August 17th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Ratshit.
August 17th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Career highlights: dancing in her underwear in True Lies, taking off bra in Trading Places, screaming her head off in Halloween.
Career did not feature enough nudity to put her in the pantheon.
August 17th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Wwos i meant for when ap said i was a lazy ass
August 17th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
I am afraid you’re spot on. Meacham has been a good third option. As the primary target? I don’t think he has what it takes. Good news is he’s gonna get a lot of opportunities to show what he has.
Bad news is he is gonna get exposed.
August 17th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
njensen, we’ll definitely reconnoiter the area. I’m the DD, I think. I can’t over-indulge. My buddies aren’t heavy drinkers either. We’ll keep our eyes open, to be sure.
August 17th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
we were borderline that yesterday. started hailing on us and raining sheet. we took cover under someones deck for about 10 minutes until it passed, then tee’d back off, hail stones still on the green.
August 17th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
While paid like one, Vincent Jackson is not an elite WR.
August 17th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
I liked us better when we were fueding.
August 17th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
This is pretty funny. But as someone who doesnt give a shit about the lyrics of a song when listening to music, I can see how even a staunch republican would rock out to Rage.
August 17th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
VJax and Santonio Holmes are the two most overrated receivers in the NFL.
