USMNT: Looking Ahead to The 2014 World Cup Squad After Historic Win Against Mexico
The USMNT won its first match ever at Azteca last night, making this as good of a time as any to check in on the squad’s progress for 2014. Last night’s effort did not resolve any questions, though it may have raised some plausible alternatives.
Goalkeeper: Tim Howard will start as long as he’s healthy. The U.S. goalkeeper pool has thinned out with Kasey Keller, Brad Friedel and Marcus Hahnemann not available for the national team. The other options are Brad Guzan, who has made just 24 appearances since arriving in England in 2008 and a number of MLS veterans.
Back Four: The defense has been and will continue being the biggest concern for the U.S. heading into Brazil. It is the area with the greatest liability and the least depth. Absent any other positive attribute, Klinsmann has opted for experience, relying on Carlos Bocanegra with either Clarence Goodson or Oguchi Onyewu. Both fullback sports have been a continual revolving door.
The unit did stand out against Mexico last night, largely because Klinsmann started three midfielders to counter Mexico’s athleticism. Fabian Johnson, who started at right back, is fast becoming one of Klinsmann’s first choice players. Geoff Cameron who looked capable of slotting in at center back, should he maintain that form. Maurice Edu looked precisely like a player who had not played central defense since 2008. Edgar Castillo did not have a bad day passing the ball. Orozco Fiscal came on as a substitute and scored the goal, though one wonders how he was in position to score that goal.
Ideally, two of Cameron, Ream and Omar Gonzalez (just back from injury) would step forward to take the central positions leaving Johnson to play right back and someone, anyone to fill the chasm at left back (or vice versa). More likely, one of the two 35-year-olds, Cherundolo and Bocanegra, could be starting.
Midfield: Michael Bradley is pivotal. The American midfield could not pass without him. The most likely formation will be a 4-3-3 pairing him with two of Jones, Beckerman and Edu. Jones offers depth to his play but little consistency. Beckerman offers little depth but is consistent. Maurice Edu is most often…just…there. Dempsey and Donovan should still be the wingers/auxiliary forwards, though it is hard to tell where Landon’s head is right now. We’ll discuss Stuart Holden when he sees a soccer field and remains on it for a reasonable period.
Striker: It is still Jozy Altidore, who finally has found a stable home in Holland with AZ Alkmaar. He scored 15 goals in the Eredivisie last season and scored twice in his first match this season against Ajax. The older options are basically just filler. Juan Agudelo has fallen off the face of the earth.
Prediction
GK: Howard
D: Johnson – Bocanegra – Cameron – Facepalm
M: Edu – Bradley – Jones
F: Donovan – Altidore – Dempsey

Agudelo has not done anything for Chivas in LA. I have not seen many games, any ideas why so ineffective?

Nicely done, Duffy.
On that note, I didn’t watch the game, and don’t know a ton about soccer. I heard the forward touches were incredibly lopsided last night. Is that indicative of a lucky win that the keeper pulled out for his overmatched team, or just a function of the style of the game.
eg – how legit was that win?

USMNT

Mexico was controlling run of play but not doing much with it. For some reason decided crossing was the most advantageous strategy (it wasn’t). Draw was probably the fairest result.

Mexico had the better possesion and run of play, but it was a legit goal, and Howard made some great saves. On the road it was a legit win.

I wonder if the Mexico team felt the lack of experience in the back line would be best exploited with the aerial play. They did have some open headers that were not put home.

I think Danny Williams will start over 1 of Edu and Jones soon enough. Edu like you said is just there and needs to play in a better leageu while Jones is usually anonymous before he makes a dumb foul and gets a yellow card.

For Defense lets hope 1 of Ream, Gonzo, John, Brooks, Hines steps up and takes over for Boca as his lack of speed scares me and I doubt he will be faster in 2014. I still think Chandler will play for the US again and it looks like Lichaj will start as a LB for Villa in the premier league which should be good cover for the LB/RB postition
August 16th, 2012 at 5:43 PM
Counter to that is Cameron is 6’3″ and Edu is 6’0″. Most of Mexico’s players were not.

LB/RB postition
Line Backer Running Back…oh wait…you’re not talking about real football.

Is Davies not going to return to the form he had before his accident? I haven’t kept up with him at all.
August 16th, 2012 at 5:53 PM
@Deus – looks like he won’t be able to get his speed back which was what made him so dangerous. Doubt he will get called up anytime soon

30th place finish.
August 16th, 2012 at 5:55 PM
I should also add that as long as everyone stays healthy I am not too worried about the Forwards and Midfield.
August 16th, 2012 at 5:56 PM
Davies’ US career is probably over. Better options, and youngsters (Boyd, others will be coming up).
Altidore and Gomez have shored up the other spot if it’s 4-4-2.

Your summation pleases the bench, counselor.

Any win in Mexico is legit. The stadium is about 7000 feet above sea level. There are 100,000 fans in the place and hundreds of them can’t wait to throw bags of urine (yes, BAGS OF URINE) at our players when they cocme onto the field. I wasn’t thrilled with the roster when it was announced, but Klinsmann finally showed the ability to mix up tactics (i.e. play a defensive style) and got a massive result. Any time you can send 100,000 Mexican fans home angry is a good thing, be it at the Rose Bowl or, especially, at the Azteca.
Nice review by Ty Duffy. My only quibble is that Tim Howard will be the starter as long as he is breathing. There is no back-up. We used to have too many goalkeepers, now we can’t even produce a capable No. 2?
I’m not sure why Juan Agudelo has fallen off the face of the earth, but he most certainly has. Tim Ream has joined him. We could use some defenders with speed.
