USA vs. Mexico: B-Team Against Full Strength Mexicans at Estadio Azteca Could Get Ugly
History: It is not on the American side. Playing at Azteca is tough though, with the USMNT’s 0-23-1 record all-time against the Mexicans in Mexico, it is hard terming this a rivalry.
Form: The United States is 3-1-2 in full-strength 2012 matches, though they did not look impressive in the qualifiers against Antigua and Barbuda and Guatemala. Mexico, outside the Olympics, has won five-straight since losing 2-0 to Colombia in February. Mexico beat Brazil 2-0 in a friendly earlier this summer. The USMNT lost to them 4-1.
Short-Handed: The USMNT is not sending a full-strength squad. Fabian Johnson is the only member of a first-choice back four who is present. The central pairing will be Geoff Cameron (off to Stoke) and Maurice Edu (who last played their during the Beijing Olympics). Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore are also sitting this one out. Mexico has basically its full team, aside from Gio Dos Santos, Carlos Salcido and first-choice goalkeeper Jose Coronoa who played in the Olympics. They are better defensively, more skillful going forward and much quicker.
The Golden Age: Mexico is in a good place. Their U-17 World Cup-winning team from 2005 is beginning to hit its prime and spearheaded a Gold Cup win over the U.S. in 2011. Their age-restricted teams won the 2012 Olympic Gold and the 2011 U-17 World Cup. They also finished third at the last U-20 World Cup. Some are already touting them as a legit contender to win Brazil 2014. We might pump those brakes a bit – Mexico has not reached a quarterfinal when not hosting – but, at the very least, they will wear the pants for the foreseeable future north of the canal. Their weakest position at that tournament may be striker, with Chicharito. For U.S. fans, mind the gap.
Equality: Japan took some flack for flying its World Cup winning women coach to London. It turns out the U.S. has a similar policy. Though, hey, they let them take the train to Newcastle instead of a bus. So, there’s that. U.S. Soccer would argue they already pay the women salaries. The women might point out that Sunil ain’t flying coach and Klinsmann is pulling down six figures per match.
Prediction: Look for individual performances. Brace for a boat-racing. Make “This is only a friendly” your mantra for the evening.

I see a grammatical error in the post, Mr. Duffy.
Alexi Lalas makes me want to root for Mexico.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:03 PM
When does the real football season start?
August 15th, 2012 at 8:09 PM
I like when Donovan plays higher and more centrally with less defensive responsibilities so he can be more exploratory and creative. At right outside mid he just has to do too much tracking back for my money.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:11 PM
Just looking at the formations on paper without seeing the functionality of the individual players, it looks like we are going to get outmanned 3v2 in the center mid.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:12 PM
When does the real football season start?
Agreed. Though when you root for the Dolphins there is no start of the season. It’s over before it even begins.

Dude I’m a Cardinals fan. They’ve had 3 winning seasons in my lifetime. I know how you feel.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:15 PM
As the Americans walk off the field, beaten but not broken, they say to their Mexican counterparts, “Lawn needs mowed, see you this Thursday?
August 15th, 2012 at 8:16 PM
They’ve had 3 winning seasons in my lifetime.
I’ve got a funny, well not funny but ironic, play on words for that. Pirates haven’t had a winning season since I was 3. But methinks it’s going to happen!
August 15th, 2012 at 8:19 PM
My money says the team in green is better paid than the stripes….
August 15th, 2012 at 8:20 PM
Another perfect game? Jesus.

August 15th, 2012 at 8:25 PM
Anybody else hear Ian Darke mention Dempsey and how he may be on the move any day now at the beginning of the broadcast?
August 15th, 2012 at 8:25 PM
Lots and lots of empty seats.
That’s like that WNBA game I saw one time when I was channel surfing. Didn’t look like there was even enough people there to cover the costs of having the fucking lights on.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:26 PM
Ol’ Uncle David covers the cost for that.

I knew there had been talk of him moving. I know he’s said he wants to play in the CL. Didn’t know if Ian had an inside scoop or was just commenting on all the speculation. I’d love to see him get a chance to play on that level. I’ve long thought he’s been the best US soccer player in the last 20 years.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:39 PM
Dempsey has had a few good years for sure. Think we have had a couple better though. John O’brien gets myvot for best player, but injuries limited him
August 15th, 2012 at 8:44 PM
for the TBLAD crowd… Just made a # of hasty additions to my iTunes;
Donnie Iris, Matthew Wilder, Pablo Cruise, Robbie Dupree & The Tubes
August 15th, 2012 at 8:46 PM
I see US has dropped one of the forwards behind the other to help with a little back pressure on their mids and to try to find the ball between the lines. Will open space for US wide mids to venture into if they get bold. Need to keep the ball more.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:47 PM
Never heard of any of them.

Donnie Iris, Matthew Wilder, Pablo Cruise, Robbie Dupree & The Tubes
Are those available on cassette?
August 15th, 2012 at 8:48 PM
Just got my tix for the USA-Jamaica WC Qualifier.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:51 PM
Saw my old tape collection at my folks house. For some reason it didn’t get pitched. Most of it was 80′s & 90′s rock. It did have my CCR and Supertramp hits tapes though.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:53 PM
Saw my old tape collection at my folks house.
I’ve still got mine. Got nothing to play them in though. Have an aftermarket stereo for my truck and it does not play those.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:56 PM
When I DJ’d I had a massive box with all my old shows/tapes. A few years ago I went through ALL the shows, slowly but surely at work, looking for deep cuts and writing them all down. That was exhausting enough I have no desire to hunt through this one of my various mixed tapes and such.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:57 PM
I actually asked the guy at the store when I was buying the stereo if he had any that played tapes and he chuckled. I said I take that as a no? He said You were actually serious?
/Yes
August 15th, 2012 at 8:58 PM
get a handheld tape player and run it through the aux port on a nice stereo.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:59 PM
That was exhausting enough
They were/are a pain in the ass but I’ve got a lot of really good ones. Can’t just throw them out. Too much nostalgia.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:59 PM
Was extremely impressed with Cameron that first half. Glad to see him get a shot with Stoke this year.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:00 PM
this past winter/spring I slowly had a nice old turntable stereo re-furbed. While I slowly work on my attic I been spinning some stuff. Just ordered 2 “The Band” lps off Ebay this afternoon.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:00 PM
Breakfast in America FTW.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:01 PM
I would sub out the carded players and the right mid. Need Donovan to do better.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:02 PM
this past winter/spring I slowly had a nice old turntable stereo re-furbed.
Step-dad is big into restoring and re-selling old juke boxes and record players, antique gas pumps and all that shit. It’s pretty neat seeing all that history.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:04 PM
Love ‘em all. Pablo Cruise was pretty cool back in the day. The Tubes were a heckuva lot more talented than the nation realized.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:05 PM
The Tubes
Rhymes with boobs. I’m a fan.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:06 PM
So glad I’m going up north for the weekend to fish. This Dream Cruise shit is already out of hand and it’s only Wednesday.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:08 PM
well, this turntable was from, I’d guess ’86 or so. Had two giant speakers but it had all the sound control levers so you can bring it in nice. The real old lp players are kinda tough on your lp’s so it’s better IMO to have something younger, relatively speaking. And some of the new ones you see in stores, they have shitty sound quality. Looks like they are made to be sold to keep grampa in the assisted living home with 2 epic hearing aids happy. I’m pretty pleased with it. Bought 4 needles online. It’s odd though, I have an old car CD player connected in on the AUX port but that never gets use in the attic.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:12 PM
So glad I’m going up north for the weekend to fish.
Where at? What are you going to be fishing for?
August 15th, 2012 at 9:18 PM
Wouldn’t hold out much hope for the tape deck though. Or the Creedence.

So I’m currently watching the 8th inning of the Tigers / Twins game and am just now realizing that this is tape delayed from this afternoon.

That’s funny. It’s probably because the people on the day shift here don’t know I exist.

My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:38 PM
I’ll tell you what kind of car. Something warm. A car where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I’m talking about a little car called Aspen.

Dumbass. 8-track is the way to go! The dulcet tones of 8-track!!
August 15th, 2012 at 9:41 PM
Been watching for an hour. About 20 minutes ago I thought to myself “I know they are north and west of me, but it there shouldn’t be that much daylight.”
Already am. That’s probably a good part of the problem.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:43 PM
My first vehicle was a ’92 S10 pickup that had 186k miles on it at time of purchase ($200). Had a nice tape deck. That tape player got stolen a few months later and it was a few months of driving around with no radio. Brutal.
/filled the 11 gallon tank at $.90/gallon for $10 once a week.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:43 PM
Her Lone Justice stuff from the ’80s is great. She also has a great song on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:43 PM

/kidding
//not really
August 15th, 2012 at 9:44 PM
Dumbass. 8-track is the way to go! The dulcet tones of 8-track!!
A real man would leave that tape player alone and run that 8-track into the tape player and power it with a cord into the cigarette lighter.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:44 PM
The 8-track player was in the back. He always thought his music collection was better than what I could record from American Top 40
August 15th, 2012 at 9:45 PM
Used to have an 11-gallon tank on my vehicle and could fill it for under $11, late ’80s.
/ Remembers when gas was below $0.50 a gallon
// That’s true
August 15th, 2012 at 9:46 PM
well, I caught some. But I didn’t land enough perch and I was planning to feed my family with a limit of yellow perch so by those standards, it was a failure. We were listening to all the charter boat chatter and nobody was catching shit.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:47 PM
My first vehicle was a ’92 S10 pickup that had 186k miles on it at time of purchase ($200).
I had a ’83 S-10 as my first vehicle that wasn’t the family Pontiac Catalina. Sexy.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:47 PM
I’m like maybe a 1/4 of a mile from Woodward. I can hear those assholes as I type. Didn’t even think of taking that to go fishing earlier. Those fucking assholes have been sitting on their faggot lawn chairs for the past month + on the weekends.

DeMarcus Beasley. Worthless. He was awesome at 19 when he used his speed to go forward. Now? Just God Awful.
Ditto for Jones. Terrible.
And Beckerman reminds me of Chris Armas. Complete offense killer. Virtually nothing one touch and almost never anything forward.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:50 PM
88 Ford Escort Pony. Put a CD player in it that I wired wrong so it only worked when the lights were on. Paid $500 for it with 106k, and had for almost 4 years until my brother wrecked it.

83 Ford Ranger – $300 – ’96
86 Tempo – $500 – ’97

85 Marquis – $400 – ’00
91 Crown Vic – $3k (only has 11k miles) – ’01
03 Elantra – ’08
I’ve had a car for 20 years and have probably paid less than $10k for all of them.

Loved that car. Bought it off my cousin for $100 after it sat under a tree in his front yard for a year because it broke down and he couldn’t figure out how to fix it himself.
My dad (a mechanic) and I fixed it up, and I hit the road. Damn thing broke down every couple hundred miles or so, but I didn’t care. Orange with a black racing stripe and an 8-ball on the stick. One time the battery ran down while I was driving it at dusk, and my buddy hung out the passenger window with a flashlight to save us.

You name it I’ve probably been called it. People like to blame the salesman if they buy a car that issues 10,000 miles later. You know, because I build and maintain them so I am obviously at fault if something goes wrong.
My favorite is when someone comes back and tries to tell me I sold them a bad car because they have to replace the brakes or tires 20-30,000 miles after they buy it.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:17 PM
i’m so geeked about this.

IIRC the 83 Ranger didnt have an intermediate setting on the wipers and then the spraying nozzles died. So I had to keep a dawn bottle filled with wiper fluid on the front seat to be used when needed.

That’s why we give you the tread depth readings at the time of certification. Guaranteed 50% tread left.
Had a customer recently who didn’t change the oil for the year after she bought the car (she drove about 18,000 miles that year), and she blamed me when the engine seized because “If this car was really certified this wouldn’t have happened.”
She complained all the way up the chain at my very large company and my store ended up footing the bill for her new engine.

Even with the way things have gone this season? I figured if he was being as ass before and not getting along with the coaching staff, his play tonight just gave him more juice to do what he wants.

One of the worst car commercials along these terms, I think it was Volvo a few years back, had the song “Green Police” playing the whole time as they gave out tickets to people not driving eco-friendly enough cars.

Not good as a pro, but really productive as a college player. He had a complete green light & 20+ ft range on his jumper. Saw him jack up jumpers on the fast break from that old hashmark they used to paint on the sideliines (prob 25 ft or more from the basket).

Great coach, and one of the most mellow cats you’d ever see on the sideline. Rarely saw him blow up at a player or official, and never took shots at folk in interviews. They called him “Gentleman Gene” when he was at MSU.
He owned that school when he was there. Bigger opportunities came, but he was always remembered fondly by the Tigers. R.I.P.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:49 PM
Rollo was hoping to get his loan this week, but apparently is still getting jacked around.
Last I heard, the SIL was supposed to be moving back into the parents’ house, and he and the missus were looking at moving out again.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:50 PM
I got 26.5mpg in the new Jeep on highway trips. City driving left a little to be desired though. Averaged about 15 overall, and I do 80% city. Explorer topped out at 24mpg on highway trips, but averages 19 overall for me through the 1st 11,000 miles.
Explorer is much larger, took me a while to adjust when I first started driving it. Hit quite a few curbs those first few weeks.

The year I played JV (’79-’80), Finch was an assistant with the varsity. He’d get into shooting contests with the varsity & rarely lose. He could shoot the hell out of the ball.
One of the purest jump shot forms I have ever seen. If you remember Khalid El-Amin from UConn, Finch was similar in build.

Cherokee also has a much nicer ride than the Explorer. Jeep’s Uconnect system blows Sync away for ease of use. Similar options you’re looking at comparable prices. Probably can’t go wrong with either really.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:53 PM
Does Ford still make Explorers? Check out a GM Acadia. It’s a great ride if you can find a good deal.

I wasn’t very good. But, a 6’4″ brotha can usually make a roster if he is willing to rebound and defend. That’s what I tried to do.
We had this one guard, Bubba Luckett, who is now the coach at Christian Brothers High, IIRC. One night, he went something like 19-24 (pre-three pt shot). That guy wasn’t the fastest, but he was a stone cold shooter.

My old roommate won best marksmanship in his armored division and got to hang out with Emery for the modern weapons of war show on the modern tanks, and fired the tank in that episode.

If you weren’t there, there is zero way I could explain the 80′s rock scene with Def Lep and such. It was a different time. We’ll leave it at that. For some reason, it somehow made sense back then.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:32 PM
Saving Silverman is a legendary movie. But R. Lee Emery kissing Jack Black was a culture shock.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:33 PM
Smallie, please expound on the mormon’s child-raising habits
August 15th, 2012 at 11:33 PM
He was great in Dead Man Walking and Saving Silverman as well.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
Let’s see, some movies I haven’t seen:
Any of the Godfathers, Star Wars, or Lord of the Rings.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
Smallie, that was what is probably the best-known line from Full Metal.
If you ladies leave my island, if you survive recruit training, you will be a weapon. You will be a minister of death praying for war. But until that day you are pukes. You are the lowest form of life on Earth. You are not even human fucking beings. You are nothing but unorganized grabastic pieces of amphibian shit! Because I am hard, you will not like me. But the more you hate me, the more you will learn. I am hard but I am fair. There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on niggers, kikes, wops or greasers. Here you are all equally worthless. And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Corps. Do you maggots understand that?
August 15th, 2012 at 11:35 PM
Apocolypse Now, Strangelove, Shining. Those are all 1980 and before though. I’ve done pretty well on shit from the bulk of my life.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:35 PM
that’s a lot to talk about, gonna have to wait for another night. Remind me tomorrow, I’ll tell you all about it.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:35 PM
His name Ermey, not emery.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:36 PM
Caveat. Popular movies that are actually good and or critically acclaimed. That boot leggin movie with Shia looks good and Battle For Shaker Heights was decent.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:36 PM
Up’s a brilliant movie. I got it from the library for something I knew my wife would like and loved it.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:36 PM
Nope
None of the above.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:36 PM
Tried to buy some dundee brewery product but couldnt bc my license is expired. Damn i chugged those yinglings too just to get some ny brew. Guess i should be extra careful driving back home this wknd. Kids will see daddy hauled off to the back of a state trooper cruiser
August 15th, 2012 at 11:37 PM
Hey vez, i told the SIL you left the state and she said “ooh ooh, I Miss You In a Heartbeat”
August 15th, 2012 at 11:37 PM
Goddamn it, why are my posts getting moderated all of a sudden?
August 15th, 2012 at 11:37 PM
Ive never seen the godfather movies from start to finish.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:37 PM
I DIDNT SAY I KNEW HIM, I SAID HE TOUCHED MY SHOULDER WITH HIS SWORD!
August 15th, 2012 at 11:37 PM
None of the rambos, predator, or aliens. never seen the first 3 rocky movies.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:39 PM
Predator and Total Recall are my 2 fav Ahh-nold movies
August 15th, 2012 at 11:39 PM
I was visiting a buddy in Buffalo in 2003 and was denied beer because my license said “under 21 until 2001″. When I pointed it out to the clerk she said it didn’t matter that I was old enough, my ID said under 21 on it.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:39 PM
Godfather 1 and 2. Inexcusable. 3, who cares.
No First Blood or Predator? No Rockey 1 or 2? Dude…
August 15th, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Refused to see Titanic back in college when girls were seeing it 8-9 times. Still holding strong.
Have never seen a Harry Potter film but liked the books growing up.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:43 PM
Why i havent seen the godfather movies? Dont care about those types of stories (mafia, mob, etc).
August 15th, 2012 at 11:43 PM
Seen some talk here recently in movie chats about people not liking movies from any time before their own. I wish SROD was here to back me up, but you are missing out on so much goodness by doing that, whether it’s movies or music or TV or literature.
Probably 95 percent of any entertainment from any era is crap. The trick is to find the 5 percent that’s worth your time an bask in it.
I love Tarantino and Wes Anderson. I also love Laurel & Hardy, Harold Lloyd and Preston Sturges. Same for Bach, Gershwin, Miles Davis and Geto Boys, or Cervantes, Melville and Paluhniak.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:45 PM
Def leppard and all those bands of their ilk can go lick balls
August 15th, 2012 at 11:46 PM
What’s the least seen Rocky movie? Has to be the first and most critically acclaimed. I was shocked going back and seeing it when I was younger and realizing he smoked and was a collector for the mob. My memory of the Rocky movies seemed to start from after he failed doing commercials.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:47 PM
The thing is, A.P., they’re not really gangster movies, any more than Sopranos was a gangster TV show. The mob stuff was just a frame on which to hang the overlying study of failed family dynamics, hubris and the corruption of power. Sort of like Breaking Bad currently.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:47 PM
Ive missed most everything but tblad this week. Any highlights from commenters?
August 15th, 2012 at 11:48 PM
Rocky was very entertaining. None of the sequels has been worth my time.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:49 PM
Ive also never seen any rocky movie from start to finish..make that any Stallone movie start to finish.cant stand him
August 15th, 2012 at 11:49 PM
I teach Film/Video/TV at the high school level. Don’t get me started on trying to get through to kids that anything before 2009 is OLD. love the reaction from the Twitter crowd whenever I break something out from before 2000.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:50 PM
/ Glances at Rollo
Nope. Not a thing.
Except Coop has returned, as Liquor.
And ddmcd got banhammered.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:52 PM
i used to use the Rocky IV instrumentals from the training montages in the mountains as motivational music before swim meets, triathlons, etc. Actually nearly the entire soundtrack actually.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:52 PM
Of my all-time top 10 movies, only one post-2000 is Shaun of the Dead. Earliest is 1938, and one from 1924 comes close.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:53 PM
Liquor’s avatar makes me thirsty like scent of a woman did
/ice clinking
August 15th, 2012 at 11:54 PM
Who was it SROD was saying last night he used to listen to for getting jacked up before track meets? It was some smooth R&B or soul, like the Spinners or something.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:55 PM
I was about to write new lyrics for Rollo’s SIL for Eye of the Tiger. But I’m lazy.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:56 PM
Goddamn Academy Award crime against nature that Pacino won for that POS.
August 15th, 2012 at 11:57 PM
The cabinet of dr. Caligari ftw
August 15th, 2012 at 11:59 PM
When that song hit, LSU removed the outline of Louisiana from midfield and painted a fucking tiger’s eye. For the longest time, I thought it was supposed to be a hurricane.
They still play that fucking song all the time during breaks in play.
Nearly three decades later, it still pisses me off.
TRADITION, dammit!

There have been jim peterik sightings at my wife’s whole foods

He was also Major Strasser in Casablanca!

/Thanks neighbor for the slow ass internet connection
They need to mow their grass. It’s a fucking jungle over there. Gonna get mauled by a Velociraptor after work one of these nights.

August 16th, 2012 at 12:21 AM
No. But I’m about to call Comcast tomorrow and bitch about not having the Pac 12 and Longhorn Network. I read they have a deal with them. So I’m gonna bitch till they give me it or other movie networks.
August 16th, 2012 at 12:24 AM
Complaining works with Comcast I hear. I didn’t know they had it out there.
August 16th, 2012 at 12:24 AM
Listening to Missy Franklin on Leno. The difference in maturity and intelligence between her and the gymnastic girls is absolutely jarring.
August 16th, 2012 at 12:27 AM
Was with DirecTV for nearly 5 years. Didn’t want to change since we had the house up for sale. Within three days they were offering the same package as new customers. Why the F didn’t I cancel after the two years, or did they not hurt for business like they are now?
/scheduled installation with them within 48 hours too
August 16th, 2012 at 12:36 AM
Rollo, they’ll usually work with you to keep you or bring you back. I’ve heard comcast will give in pretty generously if you threaten to cancel.
August 16th, 2012 at 12:49 AM
I’m calling it a night, fellas. Dog’s being a grade A shithead and the internet keeps wanting to freeze up. Maybe I’ll tell the neighbors to get a better internet connection that way it doesn’t take me so long to load everything. Wonder what they say to that. And then after I turn around and start walking home, I’ll turn back around and say, “And by the way, mow your fucking grass.”
August 16th, 2012 at 7:15 AM
It was the Spinners. “Mighty Love”, “I’m Coming Home”, “Love Has Gone Away”. Loved their harmonies. Still do.
August 16th, 2012 at 7:21 AM
This isn’t a “things were better in my day” thing.
Different eras had different perspectives on the issues of the day. Art forms then touched the people just as much as they do today. You get a glimpse of what people were going through, what their passions were.
Dialogue – especially the written word – was leaned on heavily.
And, with the primitive special effects, movies and some music had to use other means to tell a story.
With all this time on my hands, I get a chance to really take my time with old movies. The way a director set up a scene, where actors are positioned in a shot, a turn of a phrase all fascinate me.
