Not a matter of needing the bulk numbers. Just don’t think the writers would vote for anyone with a steroid suspension for their awards. A significant portion of the players/managers probably would, but I’m not sure enough to win it for a guy.

UPDATE: Kepner now says under a quirky rule, Cabrera can take an 0-for-1 and still win the batting title. Apparently you can take 0-fors until you meet the minimum requirement.

The Tony Gwynn rule, IIRC. I think one year he had it locked up but fell short of qualifying.

/google tells me the rule was in place, but 1996 was the last time it was invoked, for Gwynn

I was just going by 4.8 WAR in 113 games. If he kept up that production, he’s pretty close to 2/50 games (WAR of 6.2 ish). I’m not saying it’d happen, but it’s got more basis than a guess of 1.

That would make Melky a 7 WAR player over a full season. I can probably count on 1 hand the number of true talent 7 WAR guys in MLB, and he’s not one of them.

I think he was at 4.8 so far this year…so he was probably headed to 6. 7 def a reach though.
