LaMarr Woodley is Basically Paying For His High School’s Sports Program This Year
LaMarr Woodley attended Saginaw High School in Michigan. This year, Saginaw High was forced to institute pay-to-play for their athletics program because of budget cuts. Woodley’s foundation has stepped up to make sure that all the kids get a chance to play.
The Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker is donating $60,000 to the Saginaw Public Schools athletic department to cover the pay-to-participate expenses for athletes in the school district for the 2012-13 school year.
Woodley wants to make sure that every kid gets a chance to participate. Eight hundred students at Saginaw High, Arthur Hill and the Saginaw Public Schools (junior highs and middle schools, too) will now be able to play without their family needing to come up with the extra money.
“When LaMarr heard about it, it bothered him,” said Malcom Staples, Woodley’s uncle and business advisor. “When LaMarr was playing sports, if his family had to pay $75, they probably could have done it, but it would not have been a simple thing. It would be a hardship for a lot of people, even if they could come up with the money.”
This has been your Professional Athlete Doing Something Awesome story of the day. OK … maybe not “of the day.” It would be nice though. [MLive]

Might want to fix that Mr. Douglas.

This is probably the first time in my life I’ve ever respected a member of that team. Pretty cool thing for him to do.

What? Aren’t you from Pittsburgh?

I’m originally from AZ, but I’ve lived in Allentown for the past 5 years. Probably not leaving any time soon either. Don’t tell my wife that I actually like it here.

Future Def MVP doing great work off the field.

Only this year? I grew up thinking every school had an athletic fee to play. Pretty cool on Woodley’s part.

Really? I’ve heard of it, but I don’t know anyone who went to a school with the pay to play policy.

What do you like about it up there? I fucking love it up there, but that’s just because I’m one hunting and fishing son of a bitch. For an outdoorsman, places like that are paradise. By the way, Allentown? Shit, I’ll let you know next time I’m going up that way. Maybe meet up for a beer.

I think certain sports at my school had to pay for their uniforms. Baseball, basketball, and football of course were none of them.

I don’t know it’s home for me now. Close to Philly, close to NYC, close to the Poconos. Lots of decent golf courses, tons of awesome restaurants, places to shop, places to drink, places to gamble, all within an hour of where I live.
Anytime, 1st round on me.

Yeah they started the first year I was in high school. 75 dollars a sport with a 150 max for the year. Hardships were granted a waiver, but most people I know didn’t think it was that big of a deal.
The area wasn’t exactly flush with money either, but parents enjoyed seeing their kids competing or didn’t mind paying the extra fee.

Hey smallie you know where forest county is?

Is this a more recent thing? I’ve been out of HS for 15 years. Probably wouldn’t have been a big deal for my HS, but I could definitely see some areas where it would be, especially where I live now.

I’m sure some kids with exceptional talent would be excused from said fees, either that or they’d just transfer.

No, but a quick google search shows it to be up towards the Erie area.

My family owns a camp up there right inside the Allegheny National Forest. We go up there a couple times a year for bear season and trout fishing. First time I went there I remember thinking I’ve never been to a county with a more appropriate name because the first thing that popped in my head was “Holy Christ this is a lot of trees.” Both sides of family are from Mercer and one other county that borders Mercer, trying to remember the name of it.

That’s awesome. Never got into hunting myself, but I used to fly fish a lot, especially when I lived near Carlisle. Yellow Breeches had some awesome fishing. Used to go to Penn’s Creek near State College every year for the Green Drake Fly hatch, but in the past 5 years or so I’ve been golfing too much to fish on the regular. If I ever get sick of golfing, I’ll probably start fishing again.

This was like eight years ago, so I guess. Most of the money was used for administration and for school buses. Some of the bigger sports (football, track/field) also did fundraisers during the year to help offset the cost of new equipment.

Speaking of fishing, you ever get out west to fish? I have a lot of family in Idaho and Wyoming, so I’ve fished all over out there. Caught a 26 inch Brown Trout in Owyhee, right on the Idaho/Oregon border. All catch and release, all natives. Best fishing spot I’ve ever been to.

Penn’s Creek near State College
That’s some pristine fucking water man. I’m not sure what all the creeks and streams up around camp are fed from or into. Honestly, I think Penn’s Creek has a hand in just about every river system in PA. But point is that water up there is the same way. Not afraid to fill a bottle up while I’m fishing. You couldn’t pay me to do that here in Delaware. Not a single fucking place in the entire state.

Only time I went out West was as a kid for a bowling tournament. I’ve heard places like Montana and Colorado have some picturesque postcard worthy places to go fish, with quality fishing to back it up. Wouldn’t mind making a trip, to be honest.

More people with wealth in their profession should have this mindset. Good for him and the society it will benefit. And f the steelers.

Much respect to Woodley. Nicely done.
