Joe Philbin Cutting Chad Johnson on Hard Knocks Was Great TV
Chad Johnson, your hellish 72 hours are over. The clownish wide receiver was arrested, cut by the Dolphins, and dumped by his wife of 41 days. The culmination for the world to see was on HBO Tuesday, when it aired three gripping minutes of television: Miami coach Joe Philbin breaking the news to the 34-year-old Johnson that the team was parting ways with him. It really was, although if he had been able to run correct routes and get open he’s still on the team today…I liked the one scene in the QB room where they’re all scratching their heads at some of the defensive reads he was making

I know I probably shouldn’t have but I felt bad for him here, especially when he said the “i’ve bought into what your doing” line. It was probably BS and him trying to save his job but it got a little sympathy out of me

joe philbin is fucking horrible. the only time he seemed remotely human was when he was talking about his son, unfortunately. ugh…not sure who i can’t stand more, him or tannehill.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
yea…always sad to see an athlete who’s body isn’t letting him do what he knows he should be doing. thinks he’s still capable of the same stuff he used to do, but that lost step is almost impossible to get back no matter who you are. shit…if jerry rice couldnt do it…

I must be of a different mindset. That was painful TV. Joe Philbin came off as a pussy. He’s the head coach of a NFL team. Just cut the fucker’s ass and be done with it. He stuttered more than Bill Walton.

That is the first minute I’ve seen of Hard Knocks in my life, and it was very awkward.
August 15th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
He knows the cameras are there, I’m sure this was a “toned down” version of how he would regularly cut a guy who just head butted a woman. The random head-scratching and finger tapping showed he was obviously not in his element.

I noticed that. It was like he was trying to remember lines to whatever script the producer handed him.

Exactly how I felt. It should have been at most a 30 sec converstation ending with Philbin standing up and saying “best of luck” instead of rambling on and on.

Plus he’s been a head coach for all of 6 months, guessing if something like this comes up again it’s handled more smoothly

I don’t think he was cowering or afraid. That’s just how he talks. Takes forever to get out a sentence. I’m actually glad he didn’t make a big speech about morality and being “role model” and all that bullshit. And it’s a game, not a fucking war zone. Nothing wrong with explaining to a player why he is being cut. You don’t have to act so tough all the time.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
or, who knows…he could cut bait after 13 games and become the next head coach of the arkansas razorbacks.

I think Chad’s position with the Dolphins were always more tenuous than he thought. He was saying on twitter how he was going to get back to the old chad with all the fines and stuff. He thought his experience with the Patriots was an anomaly and more importantly, other teams around the league felt the same way.
Never should have married that girl. She is the perfect reality tv star. Which makes her an absolutely horrible person to be around in real life.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
it wasn’t a good fit…WCO with precise routes aint the same as the vertical game he excelled in with bratkowski’s bengals.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Agreed although I’m sure the fact he’s doing this on tv affected him somewhat. I will, however, disagree with TBL. I do not think Johnson was blindsided. He seemed like he knew what was coming and was understandably upset/frustrated.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
I had the misfortune of seeing Skip Bayless re-Tweeted last night saying the Dolphins would regret this…not seeing how a wideout that doesn’t understand plays is going to help out a rookie QB since he can no longer just run fly patterns and blow by his man

Someones gonna find Johnson hanging from a rafter, just like they found Brooks.
/Brooks was here

Didn’t Auburn have to take him back and teach him to read?

that wasn’t chad’s game…he might have had the best double moves in the biz with welker in his prime. you put chad in a coryell offense and he’d be useable for another year or two…

Saw this movie for the first time over the weekend. Can’t believe it’s been out there since 1994 and I just watched it now. What a great movie.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
That’s all well and good, but the QB still has to have an idea of what he was planning to do before the snap and I’m not sure that’s usually the case…as I understand it he was the same guy with the Bengals but after awhile Carson Palmer was able to guess right more than wrong
August 15th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
agreed…and sean smith was all over him like white on rice too. that was some salty coverage.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Plug in “Saban,” “Belichick,” “Petrino,” “JoePa” … hell, any big-name coach, and this would still apply.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Dat’s raycess, some rice is brown.
ALso, Jerry Rice wasn’t white.
/ Phrease now only applicable when applied to Palin and Glenn Rice
August 15th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Oh, if it was a college coach we’d still be in that room with the coach thumping the bible. Belichick wouldn’t do that though. He might be an asshole, but at least he isn’t a hypocritical asshole like those college coaches.

Also, you have to keep in mind that there is no such thing as “reality” TV. These shows are scripted to a certain degree. The producers shape what’s going on on screen and also have the cast “pay up” their characters.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
The white shirt-themed family portrait looking down on Johnson in shame amused me to no end.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
That was awesome. I wish Hard Knocks focused more on this stuff.

“Coach, for this big cutting of Ocho Cinco scene, we don’t want you just to be dull and awkward. We want you to be reeeeeally dull and awkward. And…ACTION!”
August 15th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
you know what i didn’t understand?
a) number 72 picking a fight with jake long.
b) picking that fight with richie incognito standing there
c) then picking a fight with richie incognito who got into it like richie incognito does
d) fighting with both jake long and richie incognito at the same time
death wish?
August 15th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
It’s no fun cutting people….you have to be as humane as possible about it….I had to cut player this weekend and it stil bugs me, even though it was best or both parties. Even after coaching for nearly 20 years I still hate that part of the job more than anything….

First, congrats on enjoying the movie. One of the all-timers.
Second, HOW THE FUCK DID YOU GO THIS LONG WITHOUT SEEING IT?

I’ve always been appreciative that the final scene on the beach didn’t end with a kiss. It had all the makings to do so.
August 15th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
I guess I’m the only one who thought Philbin handled it pretty well. He could have bitched out too, and made Ireland do it but he did it himself.

Hollywood wasn’t libral enough to do that…

I may be the only commenter on this site who doesn’t share this feeling.
It’s a good movie to me, but far from great.
A big problem for me is the scene where Andy plays opera over the PA and everyone is just in awe. I laughed the first time I saw it, and still do.

im sure anything out of the ordinary in prison life is a fairly shocking development.
