GQ excerpted its upcoming excerpt of Joe Posnanski’s “Paterno.” The revealed fragment does not address the book’s principal issue, how Posnanski contextualizes the coach disgraced as the book was written. We do find out that Scott Paterno considers himself “the asshole of the family,” and how much first-hand access Posnanski had at the moment the coach’s life unraveled.

On Thursday, Paterno met with his coaches at his house. He sobbed uncontrollably. This was his bad day. Later, one of his former captains, Brandon Short, stopped by the house. When Brandon asked, “How are you doing, Coach?” Paterno answered, “I’m okay,” but the last syllable was shaky, muffled by crying, and then he broke down and said, “I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself.” Nobody knew how to handle such emotion. Joe had always seemed invulnerable. On Thursday, though, he cried continually.

Intrigued to read this, if only to see how a talented writer tackled such a daunting project. The full GQ excerpt comes out Monday Aug. 20. “Paterno” comes out on Tuesday.
