Felix Hernandez Pitches Perfect Game, Mariners Beat Rays 1-0
Felix Hernandez threw a perfect game against the Rays at Safeco this afternoon, beating Tampa 1-0. Hernandez struck out 12. It is the first perfect game in Mariners history.
Perfect games used to be incredibly rare in baseball, but that’s not the case anymore:
1880-1989: 12 perfect games.
1990 -2012: 11 perfect games.
Hernandez tossed the third perfect game this season. The other two were by Philip Humber and Matt Cain.

God I wish the M’s weren’t so shitty. Love King, he needs a real chance. One post said he’s a big game pitcher w/o big games to pitch in, but when you’re all the shitty M’s have, every game is big becasue if he loses, they’re boned. God I hate my team.

So that’s now 5 no-hitters (3 perfectos) the Rays have been a part of since 7/23/09.

Future Ranger or Dodger?
August 15th, 2012 at 6:11 PM
Melky who?
August 15th, 2012 at 6:11 PM
In a few minutes Bud Selig will be calling Felix to thank him for knocking Melky from the lead story today.
A JDiddy, I agree. If the M’s just had a little hitting they’d be a tough out in the playoffs.

You know the answer to that.
“Making his Yankee Stadium home debut…”

what Random Old Dude said.

what Random Old Dude said.
So he could blow out his arm like the last guy we dumped on them? Good luck with that.

It just matters on who buys the Mariners. If they can be purchased by big wallet owners in the next 6 to 9 months they could layout a huge contract. Their salary is pretty low right now given Ichiro was moved.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:19 PM
The M’s have King signed for two more seasons.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:19 PM
Let me clarify…. the M’s will be in play with the Yankees if they get an ownership group wanting to make a statement. Otherwise, yeah, what Random Old Dude said.

Lemme ask you this – say they keep Felix. Who do they get to surround him on the roster? Do you keep him there, 13-12 every year (with great performance stats, admittedly)?
Do you put up a Texiera-style trade to fill the roster with several top propsects? Maybe you lose Felix, but the team overall could be deeper.
What would YOU do?
August 15th, 2012 at 6:22 PM
The Yankees don’t have the caliber of prospects to acquire Felix. They gonna trade their top 2 prospects, Cano and Granderson for Felix?
August 15th, 2012 at 6:24 PM
Am I the owner? Sell the team for a billion dollars, and travel.
Am I the GM? Wait until his walk year and trade him.
Am I JAG on the internet? The opposite of what the end up doing.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:25 PM
prospects
August 15th, 2012 at 6:27 PM
Never mind that proposal. The Mariners would be stupid to take on Granderson’s overpaid ass and they already have Ackley at 2B.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:27 PM
In two years, who knows what the scouts and evaluators say about guys on the farm. Some kid may emerge next year who has all the scouts excited.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:27 PM
My guess woulda been the Marlins had their spending spree not failed miserably this year. Felix would love to be in South Beach.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:29 PM
I thought the M’s had somewhat deep pockets currently, it was just tough to attract players to that stadium being a pitcher’s paradise.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:31 PM
What would I do as a life long Mariners fan? Well, kill myself since I know this won’t end well so why watch it play out.
I’m not a big baseball guy so I can’t tell you to go and get Players A, B and C. But I will say they could:
1. Fire myself and get someone who knows baseball to be the GM.
2. Pull in the fences at Safeco.
3. Be active in free agency for hitters including a few who actually hit HRs. Expand the payroll to do this. What is our payroll sans Ichiro? Sub $50M? That’s with Felix at $19M.
4. Hold the pitching staff together.
My problem with top prospects is we haven’t seemed to get value for a while. We seem to get the prospects who don’t pan out (Example: Smoak who is hitting .189).
In the end if we can’t show improvement over the next 160-200 games in hitting you have to look at getting top value out of Felix.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:31 PM
What would YOU do?
Trade him for prospects but probably not NY. Yankee prospects tend to be over-valued, so you go from there. Wouldn’t do Texas or Angels. Who out there has the valuable prospects? Boston could use some pitching and would like to stick it to NY, but what do they have, it’s hard to tell with them because they are so under-covered on ESPN. Dodgers? Who knows?
Sadly, the ownership has deep pockets, but they guard those pockets with the kung-fu grip of Donkey Kong. Fucking Nintendo!
August 15th, 2012 at 6:35 PM
2. Pull in the fences at Safeco.
Wedge seems to think they’ll do that next season. That would be huge.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:35 PM
kill myself
Fire myself
Such confidence in yourself.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:38 PM
I like Ackley. Just leave him alone & let him play.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:39 PM
The rich get richer.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:40 PM
The only way the Mariners would trade Felix would be one of the following:
Rangers give up Profar, Olt, Buckel and Perez
O’s give up Machado, Schoop and Bundy
Cards give up Martinez, Wong, Tavarez and Miller
August 15th, 2012 at 6:42 PM
A man’s got to know his limitations.
August 15th, 2012 at 6:47 PM
I think the M’s would want Jones back from the O’s. That one still burns people up here.
August 15th, 2012 at 7:01 PM
Read the post 5 times and still shocked that a way to belittle this accomplishment wasn’t put forth. A pleasant surprise.
They’ll never trade him. Only get outbid in 2015. Best game I’ve seen pitched since Wood’s 20 K game. Felix’s off speed stuff was lights out. The heat map of the final at bat shows just how on his control was today. Everything on the corners.
August 15th, 2012 at 7:02 PM
That ballpark is killing Ackley. That, and he strikes out way too much for a guy who is probably only a 20 HR guy in a normal park.
August 15th, 2012 at 7:10 PM
Melky Cabrera is sending Hernandez a Christmas card this year.
August 15th, 2012 at 7:12 PM
The Mariners are beyond stubborn. There is no good reason to hold on to him.
August 15th, 2012 at 7:13 PM
What if the next 200 are like the last year and a half, and the player is so frustrated he tries to force a deal?
August 15th, 2012 at 7:31 PM
Steroids. SHUT IT DOWN.
/ Just made that up, have no idea
August 15th, 2012 at 7:53 PM
Fuck you, you can’t have Adam back. We love Adam here.
August 15th, 2012 at 8:23 PM
Yeah, well, we’re not giving him back. Enjoy Erik Bedard.
