Fantasy Football Quarterback Rankings for 2012: High on Carson Palmer
Carson Palmer in 2012 feels to me like one of those Steve Beuerlein in 1999, Lynn Dickey in 1983, pick-a-Warren Moon-season-with-the-Vikings kind of deals. Remember, these rankings are for fantasy football and winning your league by taking advantage of the points systems. While there is a general correlation between real life quality and fantasy quality, it’s not perfect. Get that 3-0 debacle on Monday Night out of your mind, please. I see this Raiders team fitting that 6-10 t0 8-8 mold and chasing points.
Last year, Palmer averaged 8.4 yards a pass. He had the 5th most passing yards over the second half of 2011, and tied for 12th in touchdowns, meaning he was a starting fantasy quarterback once he was playing last year. This year, he’s going as a later end QB2. Either he’s going to decline a lot or he’s being undervalued. While those yards per attempt numbers may regress slightly, he’s also getting to play with Darren McFadden for the first time. The Raiders no longer have Michael Bush and are not set up as a ground and pound, with McFadden and backups Taiwan Jones and Mike Goodson. All those guys are fast and can produce YAC. The outside receivers have speed to burn. Palmer will throw for yards, and an above average number of interceptions (but not like last year, where the first game with no practice skewed things.
If I’m looking for a guy I can get on the cheap that can be the lead for a platoon, Palmer’s my guy in 2012.
I also previously talked about why I like Matt Ryan better than most, and I have him going ahead of bigger names, inside the top 7. I did posts on many of the quarterbacks here:
Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, and Christian Ponder
Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Kevin Kolb, and John Skelton
Eli Manning, Aaron Rodgers, and Ben Roethlisberger
Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and Peyton Manning
Matt Cassel and Ryan Fitzpatrick
Those form the basis of these projections, and I did similar work on the others. The numbers listed below are based on a point system of 1 point per 20 passing yards and 10 rushing yards, 6 points for all touchdowns, and -3 points for an interception. You might notice sometimes a player is projected slightly above another one even though he has a slightly lower per start projection. That’s because of risk factors like injury, likelihood of losing job, or age, where I applied a replacement level value if you had to replace a riskier starter for that extra game(s).

This.

You put the disclaimer out in here about injuries affecting the rankings but I’m surprised at where Vick ended up. Figured his fragility would drop him down some.
#13 is a real head scratcher. They’ll play from behind a lot but he’s still a rookie that doesn’t run.

Wayyyy too high
Vick ranking is based upon potential with legs and arms. A QB that has the ability to run and provide 6 point TDs is more valuable than a QB that doesn’t run and only throws 4 point TDs. The rushing yards also help provide extra point benefits.
Hence the reason why if he drops to 3-8, I’m pouncing on him.

Wait till bsanders finds out you put Peyton in with Cutler, Rivers, Palmer and 2 rookies!
August 15th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
Can I get just a brief, 4-5 sentence Lisk rationale for Cutler? I don’t disagree or agree because I honestly have no idea what to expect from Jay.
/my sideways way of asking why you skipped him in the QB write-ups
//throw me a bone, I’m so bored at work today

I wonder what his rushing stats will be? He actually has good speed. (as always, the “for a white guy” is implied)
August 15th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
Oakland has the best (fantasy) QB in the division. Suddenly loaded.
August 15th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
Well, do you get points for tackles?

There’s a difference between “doesn’t run like Marino or Manning don’t run” and not Michael Vick or Cam Newton. Luck will get rushing yards, as many young QB’s do. Guess? 15-20 per game on average with a couple of TD’s, with some games where he crosses 40 on scrambles.

Fantasy Football Quarterback Rankings for 2012: High on Carson Palmer
Lagalize it!
August 15th, 2012 at 4:53 PM
Cutler should be in tier three IMO.
August 15th, 2012 at 4:56 PM
Nice writup Lisk. I would never think of picking Palmer, but now I will take notice. I’m hoping to get Romo in the 4th Round (1st pick), and take a flyer on Luck later on, who I think will have a monster year.
Lisk do you think QBs put up obscenely high numbers last year due to the lack of defense brought on by the Lockout, or last year becoming the norm for QBs?
August 15th, 2012 at 4:56 PM
The fact that he has no offensive line doesn’t help. I do think Eli will outperform the others in his tier.
August 15th, 2012 at 4:59 PM
or last year becoming the norm for QBs?
Not just last year alone. It’s been becoming a QB driven league for a while IMO.

GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE.

The offensive environment with things like how they call illegal contact and protect QB’s has made the numbers increase.

I like Cutler. Concern is raw number of attempts playing for Chicago, especially with other top QB’s averaging 35-40. My projected YPA is an increase on last year.
August 15th, 2012 at 5:03 PM
I keep wondering if Cam is going to put up the same numbers. I have him and Rivers in a keeper league, I would love to feel confident in trading Rivers for help elsewhere.

GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE.
Meaning you wouldn’t project them that high?
I think I’m actually lower than consensus there, by the way. I’ve seen RG III at QB #13.

He probably won’t put up the same numbers. That kind of precision would be hard to achieve. My projection is for very similar rate passing numbers (looking at young breakout comps), and some regression in his rushing touchdowns, but slight improvement in pass td and int.

i love RGIII, but he is going to have a rough year.
August 15th, 2012 at 5:40 PM
Lisk, love these positional breakdowns. When are you releasing your overall picks? I draft on Sunday.
August 15th, 2012 at 5:55 PM
I got rivers in the 7th rd. Guy makes me a little nervous so I’m looking for a plan b off the waiver wire. Any qb u see as a sleeper that could make a difference?
August 15th, 2012 at 6:24 PM
i love RGIII, but he is going to have a rough year.
He is a) not likely to lose his job
b) going to have some rushing yards, which bumps up fantasy value
You can debate whether he should be 13 or 16 or 19, but those factors mean he should not be drafted lower than that.

You don’t even have to read the post…just read the title.

Someone’s definitely high on something.
