All of the writers who proclaimed that Andy won some huge power struggle when Joe Banner was splintered off conveniently neglected Andy’s weak contract status. I still think that Howie Roseman was the winner of that power struggle and not necessarily Reid.

His pass protection has been poor to the point that Rodgers yelled at him on the field which isn’t usually his bag (although oddly enough pass pro was the one thing Starks did well in the Charger game)
The Desmond Bishop injury was a killer for the season, between that and continued mediocre at best safety play they’ll need to hope the pass rush improves or else it will be a repeat of last season on that side of the ball

August 14th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
The AL doesn’t really feature a dominant pitching staff this year from teams that are in postseason contention. In fact, the White Sox (!) may just have the best all-around staff entering the playoffs this year depending on what they do with Josh Beckett. The Angels have a great rotation but they likely have the worst bullpen among playoff team (17 blown saves). The Rangers are built much like NY. Two solid starters with question marks after that. I’d take NY’s bullpen over Texas’ though.
IMO, it’s an offense driven team that wins the pennant. New York and Texas lead that pack.

@souvenircity
You are correct about the D part, but in all honesty, I like the Angels chances this year. They have on paper the best rotation and if they can put it together have the most complete team. Yankees need to score 6+ runs a game to win and if any other AL team meets them at the right time, the Yankees are gone.

They have the best on paper rotation, but with the way Haren and Santana have been pitching, they have some issues. Greinke hasn’t been good since he came over either (I know SSS).
August 14th, 2012 at 9:57 AM

Gammons mentioned with all the stars and the way Young Trout and Weaver are playing, tha to be only 5 over .500, they and not the Red Sox are the bigger disappointment. Not sure I agree completely, but he sort of has a point.
August 14th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
!!!!!!!!!
August 14th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
I put money on the Angels to win the pennant after they acquired Greinke because of the odds change. The one game playoff scares me. It’s unlikely the Angels win the West which means they’ll have to face either Oakland or the Central runner-up. All of those teams have an offense capable of knocking around any pitcher. If the Angels get past the 1 game playoff, their bullpen will need to improve for them to win a 5 and 7 games series. There was a great piece at Baseball America the other day (I’ll go back and look for it) that showed the change in innings pitched from regular season to postseason. On average, your starters throw about 75% of your innings in the regular season. That falls to just about 60% in the postseason because managers play matchups more often with their bullpens. The Angels can’t play that game because of their weak bullpen and will need to rely on a 2005 White Sox-like performance from their starting rotation. 8+ innings every time out.
August 14th, 2012 at 9:58 AM

August 14th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
Not sure I agree completely, but he sort of has a point.
Couple that with the weak division they are in and yeah he does have a point. Red Sox at least play Rays, O’s, Yankees a lot. M’s, A’s, and Rangers, while all playing well right now should all be looking WAAAY up at them in the standings.
August 14th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
SC and others – You are all seriously discounting the Rays. They are probably the one team that can beat any of the other contenders in the AL.
August 14th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Good. Everything I’ve ever heard about her paints her as a racist bitch.
August 14th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
@ark:
August 14th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Some of that is also due to the shortened rotations and an extra quality(?) arm or two (4th/5th starter) in the bullpen.
August 14th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
I’m not so sure the Angels are disappointing. They started 6-14 because they lacked a leadoff hitter and Pujols was slumping. They’re 54-42 since calling up Trout. 12 games over .500 once they had a complete team and Pujols regained form isn’t what I would call disappointing. They were 10 games over .500 on Jul 31. Being 9-14 in one run games is the problem (bullpen). Still, I don’t know if that’s quite enough to label them disappointing.
August 14th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
I like the Rays but I don’t think they’ll make the playoffs. Matt Moore has been pitching OK the last few weeks however I don’t think the trend continues. He’s been up and down all year. Price has been good, so has Hellickson. Their lineup is what concerns me come postseason (if they make it). They remind me of an A’s team from early in the aughts. Low average team that relies heavily on walks and the multi-run homer.
I think the rest of the AL East beats itself up allowing the West and Central to capture the wildcards. Just my opinion.

Must be nice for any Pack RB to run against more 7 man fronts. Bring a safety up and you find Jordy with another 72 yard TD
August 14th, 2012 at 10:14 AM
Matt Moore’s ERA is 0.89 in August (SSS applies)…has dropped every month of the season. I’d say he’s settling in. Outside of Verlander, Price is the best pitcher in the AL, and would shut down a team in the Wildcard playoff. Tough schedule the rest of the way (Rangers, Angels, White & Red Sox, Yanks and O’s), but think with Longoria back they have the ability to not only get the 2nd WC, but potentially win the AL East with the Yankees injuries.

I might take Weaver over both of them, and I love Verlander. Matt Moore still walks too many and that is something that creeps back up under pressure in the playoffs. With Shields looking very hittable this year the Rays don’t seem all that scary, but I’d still rather play the White Sox than the Rays in a series.
August 14th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
If the White Sox make the playoffs, I don’t know if anyone wants to play them*. That offense is capable of exploding for 5+ runs a game. If Jake Peavy makes it through the whole season, his doctor will probably win the AL MVP over Mike Trout.

I see you’ve turned your back on Stephen Morris, Cleet. I thought him winning the QB competition was pretty much a foregone conclusion. It’s really only saying he starts the first game. This is at the end of that article and much more interesting to me: In other depth chart news, senior cornerback Brandon McGee is listed ahead of freshman Tracy Howard.
August 14th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
The BABIP gods have been unfriendly to him.
August 14th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
I think it is. Cespedes is for real. Since June 20th, he’s missed one game. Hitting .388 over that span with 5 taters and 20+ runs scored and driven in. Chris Carter is a 3 outcome hitter just like Adam Dunn. Reddick has cooled off considerably but he’s still got plenty of pop in that bat. Gomes walks a ton and is a perfect #2 hitter.
I will concede that Cliff Pennington might be the worst every day player in all of baseball though.

The funniest thing is the odd correlation between passport ownership and obesity in this country: http://wonkette.com/440165/not-having-a-passport-gives-you-diabetes
Or, a better correaltion is that lower income people are more likely to be o-beast and lower income people are less likely to need a passport (or can afford one).

Always a delight to see Ms. Green in whatever sort of photo you can cadge of her. Yet I have pledged my heart to another, thanks to TBLs relentless cascade of gorgeous women.
