Tyrann Mathieu Wants to Stay at LSU and Play in the 2013 Season, But Can He? [UPDATE: No, He Can't]
Tyrann Mathieu, the Heisman Trophy candidate who was kicked off LSU’s football team last week, didn’t transfer to McNeese State over the weekend, despite the rumors. The latest scuttlebutt: Mathieu, a junior, apparently wants to stay in school at LSU, sit out the season, and then return to the field for the Tigers in September 2013. It’s an interesting idea – one that would certainly endear him to NFL scouts, assuming he stayed out of trouble – but is it even possible?
Friday, Les Miles said Mathieu was off the team “permanently.” The school declined to say exactly why, other than Mathieu was booted for a violation of team and school rules. Many suspected it was a 3rd failed drug test. So if Miles said Mathieu was off the team permanently, why are his people floating the idea to ESPN’s Joe Schad that he could re-join the team after sitting out a year? Glenn Guilbeau, a beat writer for the team, suspects that Mathieu doesn’t understand the school’s substance abuse policy.
Unless, of course, Honey Badger’s dismissal was for a reason other than substance abuse …
[UPDATE: LSU has announced that that no, the Honey Badger cannot play another down with the LSU. He's done.]

According to Twitter (so consider the source) Mathieu is denying this story is true.

This took a good deal of restraint I’m guessing…nicely done.

Lt. McIntyre is on the case.

Why would being an extra year older with having taken a full year off from playing endear him to scouts? Trying to think of another reason besides wanting to link to the mock draft again but am having difficulty

Transferring to a top IAA program (which McNeese isn’t in any stretch of the definition) and playing well would do a lot more for his NFL stock than sitting out would.

All things considered being kicked off the LSU football team for murdering Steve McNair seems like a light penalty.

This brings up one very bad memory and one very good one

Draft Day PR starts now for Tyrann. He’s angling for a “changed man”/redemption angle. He will be someone to root for. He knows he’s made mistakes and he now takes responsibility for those mistakes. It might end up being true but it’s still a PR move

He’d be in the 2014 draft in this scenario so he wouldn’t be following a year off. It would be an attempt to combat “character issues.” There’s also nobody alive who believes it’s going to happen

According to LSU’s message board, Mathieu was actually accused of rape a few weeks ago by a girl in one of the on campus dorms. The football program has been able to keep the campus police from going public with it so far, but methinks Lt. McIntyre is on to something here.
August 13th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
I look forward to this post being updated to reflect that.

Janoris Jenkens lit it up for North Alabama and was drafted 39th. He just needs to play this year anywhere. I do not think Tyrann is that good of a prospect as Janoris but if he spends the year keeping his nose cleaning and returning kicks he will be fine.

If that is true, SHUT EM DOWN.
And by EM, I mean LSU. That is incredibly stupid to do. Penn St. taught us nothing.

Well, Mathieu wouldn’t have done it if he’d known there was a team rule against it.

Somehow I think the elderly man in a position of power raping little boys would be treated differently than the star athlete raping coeds.
August 13th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
That wasn’t that bad, Soused. You’re correct that Mathieu is not the same level of prospect as Jenkins. He could still get drafted that high if he makes another ton of plays this year but he strikes me as a borderline starter in the NFL. Might be more of a nickel-back/returner type

I was referring to the cover up.

I doubt the football program needed to do much convincing, as the LSU police are notorious for covering up on-campus crimes to “protect” the school’s image. While I was there, a serial rapist was stalking the campus, and not a word about it was ever published.

What soused really meant

Saw way too much of that lady last week. May have even saw her once during the day walking towards the subway. Sick of her shit.

Soused, I put forth that your life of the mind is either exhilirating or terrifying, or both.

Several generations of Penn State students feel that the police were doing the right thing and you’re an asshole for bringing it up now.

Nothing different, drink very very hard for 4 days straight. Afterwards at some night day 5 or 6 or 7th shit will get real.

Unfortunately I was never availed of the fine edumacation that those folks had, as I matriculorated at LSU.

Lions need secondary help. He doesn’t need to play any more college ball to play for that penal league team. I’m sure Coach Schwartz will show him the light.
