Tiger Woods Tried to “Enjoy” the PGA Championship, But Just Wound Up Having Another Awful Weekend
72. 74.
75. 73.
70. 73.
74. 72.
Four majors, four weekends. Zero scores below par for Tiger Woods. The drought continues. Afterward, he told the media:
“I was trying to enjoy it, enjoy the process of it,” Woods said a day later, when his even-par 72 led to a T-11 at the Ocean Course. “But that’s not how I play. I play full systems go, all-out, intense, and that’s how I won 14 of these things.”
He now hasn’t won one “of these things” in over four years. His last major triumph? The US Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego in June of 2008, when he beat Rocco Mediate in a playoff.
In the 18 majors since, here’s how Tiger Woods has fared:
* 4 DNP
* 2 missed Cuts
* 7 Top 10 finishes (three in 2009; one in 2012)
Tiger only turns 37 in December, so he’ll have at least another decade to catch Jack (who won 18; Tiger has 14). It probably won’t happen, but let’s all hold off until Ken Pomeroy releases odds on that, OK?
The arc of Tiger’s 4-year funk: Infidelity cost him/karma/mentally not there … injuries have hobbled him … none of the many young studs on the tour fear him … Tiger’s putting just isn’t where it was … he can’t close on weekends. It’s as if the media is running out of Tiger storylines, and we’re left to read tripe like this:
The problem is both fundamental and nearly impossible to fix. He wants it too much.
You can see it. He wears his Buddhist bracelet, but he’s not playing Zen golf. These major championships are really all that are left for him, in terms of athletic achievement, and the only thing that can let him reclaim his place in the pantheon of the world population. It’s too much to ask. His psychologist — a profane, jazz-loving, semi-manipulative genius named Earl — is dead, and nobody can replace him.

I am just going to say that even if Tiger had played like the Tiger of old, Rory would still have won.
August 13th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
Nice copy?
August 13th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
You bash a lot on his slump on Twitter, J-Mac, but those numbers are hard to refute. I found the “enjoy it” comment very, un-Tiger like.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
Still among the best in the world, no? Is there anybody who has done better over the past 18 majors? Maybe Phil?
August 13th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
And it’s a good job, good effort on the caption. You should do more of those, Jason.

You’re continued disdain for anything analytical/statistical is truly remarkable.

Nicklaus had two 3-year droughts of not winning majors in the 60′s and 70′s, and when he won the Masters in 86, it had been six years since last major win.
/it happens.

You’re continued disdain for anything analytical/statistical is truly remarkable.
It’s especially remarkable given his stated love of gambling on sports.

Presuming that’s a link to you and Duffy accusing him of taking PEDs?
August 13th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
A million times this.

Based on my rather limited knowledge of golf, wasn’t Nicklaus’s 1986 win a major outlier both for his age group on the tour and for his career?
August 13th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
here are tiger’s problems right now…
-putting
-distance control with irons
-bunker play
that’s about it, and the distance control and bunker play will get better simply with practice. the new swing has him hitting his irons ungodly distances, and once he can dial his approaches in, he’ll have a lot more manageable putts.
he’s really fucking close. 4th in total driving!!! he’s won three times and contended in all the majors with his C+ game and is improving week by week. if you think he doesn’t have one more run where he can snatch two or three majors, you’re not paying attention.
of course, he could just take off an entire summer and come back with energy to spare like rory…but someone with an eye on being the GOAT probably cares more than the dude who’d rather spend time with a butterface than live up to his potential…
August 13th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
any idea what the scoring averages were for the field?
this just in…WEEKENDS AT MAJORS ARE BRUTALLY DIFFICULT.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
nicklaus won three majors between 37-40 and only finished outside the top 10 four times in those four seasons and had 10 top 10′s in the next six years after that, including three 2nd place finishes.
why are we trying to bury tiger? and, in the same breath, why are we annointing a kid who’s got seven professional victories in five years? it’s truly embarrassing.

August 13th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
Or only paying attention enough to cherry pick some scorecard numbers to falsely illustrate Tiger as a bad golfer. Similar to the baseball analysis.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
i kinda am anxious to see what people are going to write when he finally wins one.
will it be “sorry” or “bout time?” if it’s the latter, no wonder tiger hates speaking to you more than he hates tipping, and BOY does he hate tipping.

You must be new to golf coverage on this site…wait, no you’re not. Then why do you expect anything different?
August 13th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
You know the answer to this.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
154th from 50-125 yards (birdie zone), 118th in total birdies and 176th in bounce back (coming back with par after bogey)…there’s the problem.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
im not talking about this site’s coverage…coverage in general.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
the new swing has him hitting his irons ungodly distances
When I see what he’s hitting from 160, it makes me feel like a small man. Unreal what he can hit that far
August 13th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
As I’ve said all year, he cant drive it well enough on courses where the majors are held and his “hit 3W and middle irons” approach will not generate the birdies he needs to win titles at majors.
Also, there’s lots of talk his Foley swing is too steep and hurting his accuracy in his scoring irons. This is why he’s not winning majors.
He’ll content a ton but Tiger brah, gotta make more birdies. Dude aint scoring well enough on Par 5′s. Yeah, putting is a part of it but putting is earier when your scoring irons are standing on pins.

/still the best mid and long iron player in the world
Used to be my strong point. Figured out late in a round Saturday I’ve been standing too far away from the ball and just yanking. Now I’m virtually on top, super relaxed and hitting more consistently. Scores have dropped considerably over the summer due to improved putting and chipping like a boss.
/no one cares
//I love this game
August 13th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
I am just going to say that even if Tiger had played like the Tiger of old, Rory would still have won.
Tiger needs his A game to deal with Rory’s A game. He’s pretty much Wyatt Earp in Tombstone going to duel with Johny Ringo. Except he can’t have Doc Holliday come bail his ass out of this one.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
Something the sports psychologist told him to try…that guy will be receiving his last payment this week
August 13th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Im your huckleberry
August 13th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Interesting. You seem quite down on Rory. Is it your contention that his two majors are somewhat of a fluke? Small sample size thing?
I didn’t realize he has so few wins.
Not sure if your “taking the summer off” thing is completely fair. He’s obviously been working on his body/strength/fitness.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
im down on him because he’s so good, he should be winning at a ridiculous pace. i think tiger, in his first five years, had 21 pro wins and five majors. rory’s got seven and two in comparison.
working on wozniak’s body maybe…don’t think he’s doing many workouts and range sessions watching her in paris and london while missing more cuts this summer than tiger did in his first decade as a professional.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
that is bullshit. BULLSHIT.
doesn’t get steeper than trevino and he was the GOAT when it comes to short irons and full wedges.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
I understand Rory’s absurdly talented, but you’re holding him to an equally absurd standard. There’s a reason there’s only one Tiger. Nobody will ever match that.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
OK. But shouldn’t we be comparing them by age instead of by time on the tour?
August 13th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
I’ve been blathering about it all year, it all boils down to this: Tiger can’t putt. All those 8 foot pars Rory made yesterday… how many of those does Tiger make nowdays? 70% of them at best?
August 13th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
im holding him to the same standard the announcers and golf scribes do…they compare him to tiger, well, fine…lets actually COMPARE him to tiger then and not just use it to push copy.
August 13th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
why are we annointing a kid who’s got seven professional victories in five years? it’s truly embarrassing.
all time record for margin at pga, 4th biggest win at us open. pretty sure people were annointing tiger in ’97.
Rory is the real deal. I’ve always felt he’ll have this nice explosive 5-7 year window like Seve, and not a 15-20 year window like Tiger or Jack
August 13th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
FUCK NO. tiger was an amateur for three years while rory was a pro if we’re going by ages…why should we go by age if rory gets a three year head start?
August 13th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
he deserved it…15 and 12 > 8
August 13th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
I mean, Rory wore that red shirt yesterday, and according to a lot of the clips I saw, that was a huge deal.

Spencer, can you answer my question in #3? Over the last 18 majors, does anybody have a better resume than Tiger?
August 13th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
I’m more of a baseball guy, but a sabermetrician is more apt to compare Mike Trout to other 21 year olds and Bryce Harper to other 19 year olds than to compare them to other rookies.
August 13th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
I guess it comes down to winning vs placing, right? Rory and Phil have mulitple majors in the timeframe, but Tiger probably has more top 10 finishes.
August 13th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Roors played well but I’m disappointed in Eldrick. That course didn’t look like it was exceptionally challenging and going in to the 3rd round he was paired in the last group. To get lapped by McIlroy on Sunday….Would never have happened 5-7 years ago.
August 13th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
dont think so.
because they can compare minor league stats, etc. cant do that with amateur or college events…
tiger had 3 us amateur wins in that span too…he won everything everywhere he’s been. why would i care about age when at the same ages, tiger’s had half as many starts?
August 13th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
sorry…misunderstood your question (working at same time).
tiger’s getting there…contending’s a good first step. nobody’s really stepped up in his absence, esp not with rory going t40, cut and t60 in the first three this year…
August 13th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Great episode of Breaking Bad last night
Meh. Hell on Wheels was very slow
August 13th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
This is kind of my point. If everybody is struggling, as evidenced by so many new major winners, then you can’t say it’s just Tiger. There’s got to be something else that is affecting the entire field.
August 13th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Tiger is going to win all four majors next year and laugh at all the media writers. Did you see him give a ball to that kid in a wheelchair yesterday? Nothing from Nantz on that, but on Saturday when he two people and signed two gloves for those people, CBS put up a graphic on it.
It was kind of funny, I think it was the 5th hole, something like “5 strokes, 1 bogey, two gloves signed”

ha. it adds up like this:
2012 majors: Rory 1, Tiger 0. When you get a major in the bag, your year is valdidated. When you are Tiger and Phil and say it’s all about the majors and don’t, well, it’s a lost year. Those are the stakes for those guys.
