Andrew Luck Surpassed Cam Newton, Peyton Manning & Every Other #1 Pick in His Preseason Debut
Andrew Luck threw a touchdown pass on his very first throw, matching Peyton Manning from 14 years ago. You may have heard of that guy. First pick, Indianapolis Colts, college star, dad was a quarterback, all that.
Luck then went on to have a better preseason debut than Cam Newton last year, and a better first game than his predecessor in Indy. In fact, his debut was better than every first overall pick going back to Manning. (Just for fun, I listed Griffin, even though he was the second overall pick, since many viewed him as #1 overall worthy in any other year).
One game is meaningless, right? Just the preseason. Sure, anything can happen, but with the notable exception of the Couch going on to get hurt and struggle with the expansion Browns, there is some relationship. JaMarcus Russell didn’t throw a single pass in the preseason. Alex Smith wasn’t ready. Sam Bradford, who has been defined by low yards per attempt and dink and dunks, had that in his debut. Vick only threw 6 passes as the backup his rookie year, but also contributed right away as a runner.
I’d rather my top pick start like Luck than Russell, that’s for sure. This Luck guy might turn out to be pretty good.

Suddenly, the Colts are loaded.

JaMarcus Russell didn’t throw a single pass in the preseason.
Jamarcus wasn’t signed until the preseason was over.

I don’t trust any athlete that can’t grow a real beard. Shows a lack of testosterone.

Sweet visor… Real gun slingers throw picks in the preseason.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Give him the MVP now.

Jamarcus wasn’t signed until the preseason was over.
So you are saying I am right, then.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
I just love that this preseason will make someone in my fanasty league draft him 5 rounds too early.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Between that and Cam’s success last year, it’s almost a certainty.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
So, from the last couple days on here I see Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck willbe Co-Mvps.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
Jarring.

except for Cam it went a little something like this: (1) wait until he has to face an NFL defense. (2) wait until the regular season starts and he’s going against first team defenses. (3)it’s just the Cardinals, wait until he faces a good team. (4) oh shit!!! I guess Luck has the fortune of skipping 1-3.

Put that race card back in the deck buddy.

Give him the MVP now.
ALL The MVPs!
what’s with the ratface?

He looks like just as much of a doofus as Peyton does so I guess he’s got that going for him. It looks like his neck can support his head because it isn’t quite a bulbous. Manning would get the giveaway windbreaker at a drafty party while Luck would be allowed to don the cashmere sweater.

I have a feeling I know what you’re implying, but analysts go gaga over QBs who read defenses in a traditional sense. Cam had never shown that ability so that’s why people were hesitant to see if it translates.
You’ll notice RGIII isn’t having the Cam issue either. Analysts have adapted.

Luck looked good but YPA is a silly barometer for 1 game. Heavily skewed by the first play of the game which was a catch behind the line of scrimmage that turned into a 65yd TD. I’d be interested to see this table when filtering out YAC.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Yeah put the race card back in the deck. It’s perfectly understandable for analysts and writers to urge caution with a guy who hasn’t run a pro style offense and that uses his legs a lot, very rare to jump to conclusions on him and inflate his value. Doesn’t have anything to do with him being black.

Shouldn’t be hard to do. Are you at a desk at work? Just take a post it and cover the last column.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
So you are saying I am right, then.
Not quite. He had a preseason debut, it just happened after his rookie season.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
The actual article makes it look there’s nothing to see here:
August 13th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Definitely this.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Nevermind, I now notice you typed YAC, not YPA.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Oh what was I saying?

I like to picture the room in the house that Lisk works in to look a bit like the inside of Gargamel’s castle. Complete with the boiling cauldron.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
That, or the hut that Yoda lived in on Dagobah.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
Definitely this.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
Removing run after catch screen pass touchdowns from each Qb:
Griffin 3 – 5 50 yards 10 YPA
Luck – 9 – 15 125 yards 8.3 YPA
Still both higher although RGIII needs a much bigger sample.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Lisk comes flying off the top rope.
August 13th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
He threw one quick out that Janorris Jenkins should’ve taken back for a pick six, but he somehow let it slip between his hands. Other than that, his ability to avoid the endless penetrating defensive linemen and free rushers and still reset and be accurate was what impressed me. He’ll need it, too. Guy is going to be good, but he’ll be running for his life all year and throwing quite a few picks trying to compensate for that defense. Certainly an encouraging debut for a fanbase eager for some encouragement.

Yes, you’ve certainly been beaten up for the past…12 months.

Not every team can have a QB so nonessential that the team still wins 11 games in his absence.
August 13th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
damn!
August 13th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Yea, that was a terrible year. I was just starting to recover, until the Super Bowl came along.
