USA Basketball vs. Spain For the Olympic Gold Medal
Team USA is a 21-point favorite. So Spain has no chance, right?
Unless Spain shoots like Lithuania did eight days ago in nearly shocking Team USA, and LeBron gets in foul trouble and Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony and the Americans shoot under 20 percent from deep, it’s going to be nearly impossible for Spain to win.
I love the Pau Gasol-Marc Gasol-Serge Ibaka frontline, but Spain is simply too thin on the wing. A much better matchup would have been the best of the Olympics vs. Team USA:
G Patty Mills, Australia
G Manu Ginobili, Argentina
G Tony Parker, France
G Leandro Barbosa, Brazil
G Sarunas Jasikevicius, Lithuania
F Nic Batum, France
F Luol Deng, UK
F Andrei Kirilenko, Russia
F Serge Ibaka, Spain
F Luis Scola, Argentina
C Marc Gasol, Spain
C Paul Gasol, Spain
That’s a team that has the requisite depth and balance to give the Americans a run.

Both teams bombing early. Should be fun.

35 points in the first quarter. Spain is in trouble.

Spain 14-2 run gives them the lead. USA snatches it back.
3 TDs for a spread is enormous.

M Gasol picked up his 3rd on Durant’s baseline bucket. Shocked Spain coach didn’t pull Gasol.
He got his 4th on the next trip down.

Reyes can bang a bit defensively. They’ll miss Marc’s passing game, but no reason to panic yet.

I love Navarro and Fernandez in international play. They go at it with a lot more freedom/fearlessness than when they play in the NBA.

Has Marc always been this fat?
August 12th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
mole, prior to the 2010 season, Marc had lost a lot of weight (a lot of running, mostly). Lately, I don’t think he’s following that regimen.

The volume of fouls is absurd. KD and Melo jacking bad 3′s. Get the ball to LeBron.

Can we bury the idea that this team could hang with the ’92 Dream Team yet?
August 12th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Pau!
August 12th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Yup, some bad parenting skills by the parents of this team.
August 12th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
So. Many. Fouls.
August 12th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
Did anyone not on the current team think they could?
August 12th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Yes, in fact respected journalistic institutions such as the USA Today Group have written articles filled with words on this topic.
August 12th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
Link? I recall members of the current team saying that, but don’t recall a single journalist agreeing with them.
August 12th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Nope, they could hang with them
August 12th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
On the court?
August 12th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
no, in parenting skills. Yes on the court.
August 12th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
in a game where the game isn’t being kept close by foul calls mucking up any flow, they definitely have advantages over the 92 squad, just as the 92 squad has the big man advantage.

For being one of the all-time greats, mike krzyzewski always looks soooo pissed when he’s working. If I was coaching the best players in the world, I’d be cold chillin’ on the side. Cracking jokes, doing Chappelle impersonations, having a sno-cone.
Enjoy the ride, coach.
August 12th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Uh-oh. ‘Melo’s hurt. Poor, sweet baby. Get your carcass off the floor & get someone else in there.
August 12th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Less Melo and Kobe. More KD and LeBron.
August 12th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
A Gasol trying to play physical is out of his element. Obvious foul
August 12th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Yeah, I’m the best.
Signed LeBron
August 12th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
No shame in being second-best team in the world. Spain gave it a good ride. USA was the better team. Good, competitive game today.
August 12th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
There is no glory in second when you throw a game and talk about having the blueprint just to face the U.S. in the Gold Medal game. Do all of that, win the thing.
August 12th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Now that is LOL-worthy.
August 12th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
ben, I hear ya. I overlooked the chicanery Spain perpetrated earlier. I regret my error.
