NBC Will Now Live Stream the Closing Ceremonies
NBC Sports has been criticized for its decision not to air the Opening Ceremonies live, or at least stream it online so people who wanted to watch could do so. They also received a fair amount of critique for editing out significant portions of the Opening Ceremony, which, because of their decisions, American audiences never saw.
In a reversal today, the network has announced that it will be offering the Closing Ceremonies on a live stream (while still airing the event on tape delay on the parent network). Apparently, the Closing Ceremony is not as complex as originally believed. The full statement, via John Ourand:
“It’s part of our continuing effort to innovate, experiment and learn. This is not precedent setting, but rather another chance for us to gather data about how live streaming and television complement each other.”
I can honestly say I have never watched a Closing Ceremony–it just doesn’t have the same draw or anticipation as the Opening, and the Olympic fatigue has set in by about the last 48 hours. I just hope that when they get lower ratings for the closing, and lower numbers streaming the Closing Ceremony, they don’t view that as indicative of how people would feel about the next Opening Ceremony. (Though, with the games in 2016 in Rio De Janeiro, it should be less of an issue).

Watching Closing Ceremony = watching closing credits on a TV series. Who does it?
Lots of red scores today at Kiawah. Unless the wind picks up again, someone is gonna make a major move. Based on recent showings, I don’t wager it will be Eldrick.

I know the only time I sit through the closing credits of a movie or show is if I see an actor I recognize from something else and can’t remember their name.

Hey Meth, looked like there was an active TBLAD last night. I was watching multiple preseason NFL games online and missed it.
One definite impression: Weeden does not look like a savior for Cleveland.

Wasn’t as packed as it usually is, but I think that’s because people are getting bored with the SIL saga, that and it was a Friday night. Most people I assume have better things to do. I, however, was here at work with nothing better to do. I swear my lack of drive at work is not from poor work ethic, 9 times out of 10 there’s just nothing to do.

I thought the Rollo saga ended with the SIL getting the boot and Rollo and his wife moving back in.
I feel your pain re the boring job. I’ve had similar situations, only didn’t have Internet access to provide amusement or had my favorite sites blocked.

Anyone watching the PGA? That McIlroy shot into the tree was amusing.

Speaking of which: can athletes be barred from using the phrase “shock the world”? Unless it’s the World Cup or the Olympics, the world’s not paying attention to you, and really doesn’t care.

They block quite a bit here. I always say I’m surprised I can even come here. Ol’ boss lady always says to tone it down on the “non-work related reading” but what do they expect us to do? Stare at a blank screen all night? I do customer service emails for a coffee company (please shoot me) and when there’s actually work coming in, it takes 100% priority. But more often than not I only do about 15-30 emails a night, and they average about a minute and a half each to respond to. I remember bringing this up before but I shit you not, there was 3 days left in July when I checked my tracker for the entire month. I did the equivalent of 3-4 days worth of work. 5 if you really stretched it.

Nothing new huh?

Meth, your job and my job have similarities when it comes to time-filling (or time-killing).
I work a contract gig involving online databases; I usually have enough real work each week to fill 20 hours or less. But the bosses (and I have several) want me on site, sitting behind a desk, and want me there at least 40 hours a week, so there are a lot of sloooooow periods.
So far, Ihaven’t gotten any flak about online “abuse,” but the firm has its IT department block a lot of sites, such as YouTube and anything involving music.
It’s pretty much what turned me into a web commenter; I was always happy to lurk until I started this job. I enjoy the interaction with the commenters here and at a few other sites.

Do you get free product? That would make it almost worthwhile. But then, I’m a java freak.

Same here. What are some other ones? In all honesty I can’t even remember how I ended up on this site, but finally after a few weeks of checking it out I signed up.

That’s actually what made them decide to go ape shit on blocking everything. They found out (long before I worked here) that when it was slow people were hooking their IPods and shit up to the computer and downloading music and movies. Apparently you used to be able to do whatever the fuck you wanted, minus porn and shit like that I assume.

Wow, the wheels are really coming off for Tiger right now: missing putts, pulling approach shots.
The commentators, meanwhile, are blaming it on his knee. Pfffh.

There are many attractive Norwegian and Montenegran women in this handball final match.
August 11th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
That’s the reason they give at my gig. I can understand when it slows the server, and also for downloading and porn.
But every so often, one of the bosses will mention something they just saw on YouTube or on a streaming site, so somehow it’s just blocked for peons.

We can have as much as we want while we’re here and when they get a shipment you can take a little home if you want. I don’t drink coffee so that’s not an added benefit. And in all honesty even if I did it wouldn’t make working here any better. Chances are this won’t happen, but I told one of my co-workers that if I go out on my break and someone offers me another job while I’m out there I’ll come back in and clock out and leave. I know it’s not the right thing to do but that’s how sick I am of this place. I would have no problem walking out unannounced for a better more promising opportunity.

Gotta admit that’s pretty funny though if you can imagine being in their shoes. Telling someone about some funny video and then halfway through the explanation say oh yea, you don’t…get to…look at Youtube…do you?

This is what I’ve never understood: the company can insist you give it two weeks’ notice before leaving, but it can oust you with no notice.
If I get an offer and decide to accept it, I will give notice if the company has been treating its employees fairly. If it fires or lays off without notice, I have no problem doing the same to it.
