Preseason Football: It’s Tim Tebow Time (Which in This Case, Means Backup Quarterbacks Get Their Reps)
Tonight’s preseason schedule features six more games. Tim Tebow should get a fair amount of action as the second string quarterback as the Jets face the Cincinnati Bengals. I wouldn’t expect the Jets to show anything about his usage in different packages but rather in the base offense working with the backups.
Here is the rest of your Friday night preseason schedule:
Cleveland at Detroit (7:30): Trent Richardson will not play in the preseason, but Brandon Weeden should make his debut and play a few series, after being named the starter earlier in the week.
New York Giants at Jacksonville (7:30): Oh, yeah, the defending Super Bowl champions start as well. Blaine Gabbert needs to start playing well in year two, and while most starters get out early, I wouldn’t be surprised if he got more work.
Tampa Bay at Miami (7:30): Two new head coaches make their first coaching starts in Greg Schiano at Tampa Bay and Joe Philbin in Miami. Expect Ryan Tannehill to get a chance to show what he can do, especially with veteran David Garrard needing knee surgery and now missing most of the preseason, so as to allow the team to begin to decide whether he can start the opener. I often like to look at hyped rookie running backs like Doug Martin. If he gets few carries, I actually consider that a good sign that the team wants to save him for the season and not put a lot on tape.
Arizona at Kansas City (8:00): Player to watch–second year wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin has been impressing early, and I’m sure those stories had nothing to do with leverage against Dwayne Bowe. Incidentally, local news station KMBC has said Bowe has signed a contract, and multiple reports have him arriving in Kansas City this evening. He obviously won’t play even if true, but we’ll see if Baldwin shows it in a game setting.
Minnesota at San Francisco (9:00): Minnesota has some young players in their secondary, an area that needs major work from last year. Will we see Randy? I’m more interested in the running back rotation. I thought Kendall Hunter was a possible emerging player this year, but the additions of Brandon Jacobs and LaMichael James creates a murky rotation.

TBLAD bumpin’ tonight.
/Not really
August 10th, 2012 at 8:26 PM
I’m in. Watching Tebow do what he does. Which isn’t passing the ball downfield.
Seems like TBLAD kinda drags on Friday nights. Thoughts?
August 10th, 2012 at 8:30 PM
It’s normally pretty slow unless there are big games or events going on.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:33 PM
Absolutely in love with the Chiefs offense already.
Baldwin and Bowe (whenever he comes around) on the outside, McCluster the slot, Boss and Moeaki at TE, Charles and Hillis switching off in the backfield. Just avoid Cassel fucking too much up, and it’ll be a great year on that side.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:34 PM
Tebows vs. Bengals don’t move the needle in August? Color me stunned.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:35 PM

Most people probably have better things to do. If I wasn’t at work I wouldn’t be on here. And speaking of work, you know your job sucks when out of all the people that work here, only 2 like it here and wouldn’t leave for another job. We of course do not include the boss in this type of conversation, so I can’t speak on her behalf regarding that issue.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:35 PM
does anyone here actually go to the preseason games? saw a season ticket holder offer two tickets to the next Bears preseason and was charging $144 for two tickets. Is she insane to ask for that much?
August 10th, 2012 at 8:36 PM
C’mon, Chief. Chargers have enough trouble with KC as it is. You guys getting better means my guys may struggle more.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:36 PM
charging $144 for two tickets. Is she insane to ask for that much?
Absolutely
August 10th, 2012 at 8:40 PM
monster, I would guess most workplaces are like that these days. Too bad there isn’t a nationwide poll on workplace satisfaction. Bet the answers would be eye-opening.
rollo, It appears some diehards do show for these things. What’s the call on season ticket holders having to spring for exhibitions each year? I thought it was all one package.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:40 PM
was charging $144 for two tickets
Very good seats at a Patriots Dolphins game weren’t much more than that in Foxboro.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:41 PM
Even if those were great seats no way I’m paying over 70 a ticket to watch backups and people hoping to make the cut for 3/4 of the game
August 10th, 2012 at 8:43 PM
One thing about Foxboro, those people around there are lucky they have that stadium, otherwise they would have nothing. It’s as if Robert Kraft told the developers to find the most random shithole in New England and start building. Stadium, Target, a few restaraunts and a snowmobile dealership. If I left anything out, I didn’t leave much.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:43 PM
I think it’s one package. Probably for most teams. Just seems like you could find extras for much cheaper than whatever face value is. You’re right in that there’s probably only 8-9 chances to see a team play all year. Looks like someone snapped up the two for that price I mentioned too.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:44 PM
Even if those were great seats
Wasn’t preseason I went to, buddy.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:45 PM
@Meth, sorry for the confusion, I was responding to Rollo. Your tix I would jump on for a regular season game
August 10th, 2012 at 8:47 PM
I guess I should’ve mentioned that it was regular season, but that was the whole point. Fucking excellent seats, last game of the year, playoff contention team, and the tickets weren’t much more than that Bears preseason game.
/Not a patriots fan, by the way
August 10th, 2012 at 8:49 PM
And maybe that’s why they don’t charge outrageous prices for tickets to the Patriots stadium, because before and after the game you have absolutely nothing to do, unless you want to buy a snowmobile.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:49 PM
I see no problems with this whatsoever.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:51 PM
Fucking excellent seats, last game of the year, playoff contention team, and the tickets weren’t much more than that Bears preseason game.
My guess is she’s charging face value. Season tickets have to be bought for preseason and regular and they don’t differentiate the price. There’s little better in this world than good seats to a quality football game though.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:51 PM
Firstly I would like to open a beer and say I postulated that SIL could have a history of this behavior the wife was aware of. Send me your tributes sirs. Also congrats Rollo on not being killed and posthumously divorced. Good luck on the mortgage front.
Brother bought 3 tickets to Bills v Redskins for $3 each off stub hub. People just throwing them away.
After a series of escalating binges I am trying to take it easy although I am now simply drinking at an alarming rate alone. Think this is backfiring.
Can someone explain private equity to me?
My understanding thusly:
2 guys have a profitable liger farm
Old super rich white men buy the farm
Immediately cut the wages of the liger farmers
Borrow against the liger farm pay themselves a dividend
Liger demand falls Old rich white men declare bankruptcy
Liger farmers after taking paycut are now jobless/homeless
Old super rich white men keep money from loan get richer
Rich white men get super richer from bankruptcy insurance?
Is this a fair example of how private equity can work?
August 10th, 2012 at 8:52 PM
Too bad there isn’t a nationwide poll on workplace satisfaction. Bet the answers would be eye-opening.
I saw one they did, but it was one of those polls they only did 1,000 people. If they did nationwide, I don’t know that I’d be too shocked either way. There are a lot of people (very lucky people) who love what they do. There’s just also a lot of people like me whose only satisfaction at work is payday.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:54 PM
I saw one they did, but it was one of those polls they only did 1,000 people.
Was a stat nerd in college, that’s actually a decent sample size. After that you get the costs of recruiting more participants far outweighs the reduction in sample error.
/Gives self wedgie.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:54 PM
Nice to see the jags are in regular season form. Giants dongslapping them tonight
August 10th, 2012 at 8:56 PM
There’s little better in this world than good seats to a quality football game though.
Dolphins made me wait till about 2:15 left in the 4th to finally score a touchdown. Fucking Dan Carpenter making 50-60 yard practice field goals all during warm-ups, game comes and on the first or second drive missed a 20 yarder. I said welp, guess this is the kind of game it’s going to be. And it was. Thorough ass kicking, but I also thoroughly enjoyed it. Had went to a college game when I was a kid but didn’t remember it, so that was really my first real experience seeing it live.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:57 PM
I’m guessing there are so many more people unhappy at work, but can’t afford to quit. They get the socialization at the workplace, but not the job satisfaction.
My last job was heavily contractor-supported. Brilliant folk, and necessary for their wisdom and experience. Most seemed dissatisfied, since they didn’t have any real responsibility or decision-making power. They were around just to answer questions guys like me couldn’t answer.
Now, with contractor cuts and contractor/GS conversions, they are just as dissatisfied for less pay.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:58 PM
In all fairness, if Liger demand fell, the farmers would be out of a job anyway.
Old super rich white men keep money from loan get richer
Pretty sure the rich white men would have to put up some kind of equity to get the loan. If they default, bank keeps the asset(s). Not sure how this whole transaction make the rich white men “richer”.
August 10th, 2012 at 8:59 PM
/Gives self wedgie.
Haha.
Was a stat nerd in college, that’s actually a decent sample size.
I would say it depends on where you got the sample from. Did you ask 1,000 people from the suburbs of a bustling city, or did you ask 1,000 people out in Fuckass, North Dakota? You guys want to hear a story about North Dakota?
August 10th, 2012 at 9:00 PM
I would say it depends on where you got the sample from.
Very true, I assumed a cross-section. Rookie mistake.

August 10th, 2012 at 9:00 PM
Story time! Bring it.
August 10th, 2012 at 9:02 PM
I’m in. I’ve always heard interesting things about the Dakotas in random stories.
August 10th, 2012 at 9:05 PM
Well it’s not long and epic like Rollo’s but here goes. The company my Mom works for trasferred everybody to work from home, and her boss lives in North Dakota. She sent my Mom a picture of her husband riding his snowmobile, and the caption said “looking at my husband at eye level through the bedroom window riding his snowmobile.” My Mom didn’t want to offend her but asked what was the big deal about that. Her boss said, “Our bedroom is on the second floor.” That’s a LOT of god damn snow.
August 10th, 2012 at 9:05 PM
Jets look … crappy. probably not worth a post for tomorrow, but im writing one, anyway.
August 10th, 2012 at 9:07 PM
Some guy I’ve never heard of has 60 yards and a TD for the Lions. Weeden looked like shit. McCoy is much better suited to start the season for the Brownies.
August 10th, 2012 at 9:07 PM
Thank you. I am very biased in this and would like to know how it actually goes down.
I thought the cost of buying the farm could be less then the initial dividend so they would profit from borrowing against the farm. Lending is much tighter now though.
What do you know about bankruptcy insurance?
/Liger farms as every knows are recession proof
August 10th, 2012 at 9:09 PM
I tried to watch. I really did. It was difficult, but it’s the first preseason game.
I turned over to watch a Lionel Barrymore/Jean Arthur/Jimmy Stewart movie on TCM.

Not enought to talk legibly about it.
I’m going to have my long lost Nigerian Uncle that e-mailed me earlier tonight about a $20,000,000 inheritance contact you. I think we have a good business model and can make a killing at Liger farming.

soused, you get it. The scene where Tony’s parents arrive a day early for dinner with Alice’s parents is on at present.
I’m not a Red. Was liberal before I got commissioned. Now, pretty conservative.
I agree with your call on the Hays Code. There are some pre-Code movies (Barbara Stanwyck, Marlene Dietrich, et al) that were pretty evocative for the times. Stanwyck wasn’t classically pretty like Garbo, but she was brassy as hell.
August 10th, 2012 at 9:19 PM

August 10th, 2012 at 9:26 PM
when did the wheels fall off for Seagal? the old school movies where he played the same character of an inner-city badass cop are still highly entertaining. Above The Law, Out For Justice, Marked For Death, and the one where he was in a coma. Remember having those on VHS tape.

My oath of commissioning was a version of a loyalty oath. Still applies to me in my retired state, if I recollect correctly.

Good’ ol VHS. Having to fuck with the tracker button to get that fuzzy shit to quit, just to have to do it again in about a half hour. Good times, man. Buddy of mine got a good laugh not too long ago because he saw I still had a VCR.

Well, I’m an idiot and forgot they were doing major road work on the street that my apartment driveway feeds out to and didn’t move my car. Seeing as LA public transit is hell and unreliable, time to hit the emergency whiskey button.
August 10th, 2012 at 9:40 PM
With that said, we often have winters with twice that.
August 10th, 2012 at 9:41 PM
soused, no apology necessary, dude. I was trying for arch sarcasm. Shoulda put an eye roll or something in there.
As a retiree, I am free to hold any view, but there is an unwritten expectation that I will stay loyal to the DoD and members currently in uniform.
My pension isn’t in jeopardy. I think (think) even if I was convicted of a crime, I would still get paid while in the pokey. Congress is a greater threat to my pension, with budgeting responsibilities and all.
August 10th, 2012 at 9:42 PM
Well you shouldn’t be biased until you understand something. Like all things there are good and bad examples. There were a lot of PE backed leveraged or management buy outs in the 80s that were particularly nasty and there have also been a lot of PE backed LBOs/MBOs that have provided critical capital and saved companies from drowning.
There are hero’s and villains in everything. Just because Bernie Madoff was a scum doesn’t mean that Julian Robertson is. All that said I may be biased to as my group is backed by a PE firm.
The true role of private equity is ideally to provide capital for smaller companies to become big companies, turnaround inefficient companies, and liquidate obsolete companies. Is it also simultaneously an alternative investment vehicles for high net worth individuals and institutional investors like pension funds and university endowments.
Lastly, its not just rich white men. There are also a lot of asians (Chinese/Japanese/Indian) and middle eastern men too
August 10th, 2012 at 9:43 PM

August 10th, 2012 at 9:52 PM
That’s what bias is though a conclusion drawn out of preference without data.
Bias as in against Mitt Romney.
So is bankruptcy insurance a real instrument? Is it only used by the villains? I could how rich asian/middle eastern/white people could use it to protect the profitably companies from the failing ones in that regard.
How often is the plan from the beginning bankruptcy insurance yield?
Austerity is a bitch and has always failed. You cannot stimulate an economy by decreasing consumer capital. It historically has always failed and it’s depressing that no one seems to learn. We are doomed to repeat as it was said. Balls.
August 10th, 2012 at 9:52 PM
Lastly, its not just rich white men. There are also a lot of asians (Chinese/Japanese/Indian) and middle eastern men too

Truth. Capitalism struggles without demand. The working class has to have enough capital to make mass production of goods and services worthwhile.
Capitalism has to continually show me where my life is lacking, and what product I need to fill that void. Demand, or better yet “desire”.

I’ve pretty much decided to never talk politics here. Carry on chaps. But I will talk about rain. Michigan has been a fucking dessert this summer. We finally get rain and I’m happy. I can finally go back to my blue ribbon trout stream for the first time in a couple weeks. Then it keeps raining like a mother fucker today and probably through tonight according to that bastard weather.com. So my plans to go fishing tomorrow are up shit creek now. Oh well, ST. You’re joking, right? You determine fishing trips based on the per cubic foot discharge of water?

Yes. I’m talking bout trout fishing bro. I’m in the water. It’s a river that is usually only 10 feet wide at most at times and that’s being generous. The runs I wade can be quite treacherous if the water is too high. High water is scary as hell. I’ve slipped and fell and been swept underneath water back in the day.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:29 PM
Yes. I’m talking bout trout fishing bro.
That’s just nerd level of epic proportions. Just take into account how much it has rained and say “Maybe I shouldn’t go fishing today” Or on your way home drive by it get out and see for yourself and give it the ol eye test. I have never. NEVER heard of someone using per cubic foot discharge of water to determine whether they’re going fishing or not. Even if they are trout fishing, bro.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:29 PM
Also if the water is dirty/muddy it kills my chances of catching fish. Clarity is key.

I wouldn’t eat it, nobody in my family would either. But it’s not uncommon. Some people think it’s good, but I refuse to try it.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:38 PM
I love salad. I also love most fruit. I absolutely hate fruit in my salad.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:39 PM
Hillbillys. Carp is a garbage fish. I wouldn’t mind bow-fishing for em sometime. But would never keep em. Would rather throw em in the woods. Hate carp. Hell, I rarely ever keep a fish. Maybe if I’m up north camping and catch a nice Walleye or Trout. I may keep it and eat it. Other than that I practice strictly catch and release.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:39 PM
I’ve never tried it but you can bow-fish carp around here legally. That’s that shit you see them doing with alligator gar where they shoot it with a bow and the arrow has a line attached to it. Shit would be awesome.

Hell yea. If a neighbor gives you a bowl of fruit salad as a welcome to the neighborhood gift, scratch them off the Christmas party invite list.

You guys heard of that doctor that was waterboarding his daughter right? That son of a bitch lives about 10 minutes south of where I work. That’s also the same town where that doctor videotaped himself fucking over 100 babies and kids. That county is a bunch of retards and pedophiles.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:45 PM
Fruit salad is fine. I was thinking more along the lines of getting lettuce or spinich leaves with some kind of berry sprinkled on top.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:46 PM
It’s weird, but Wendy’s berry almond salad is pretty nice. Blueberries, strawberries, sliced chicken breast. To me, it works. Not saying you gotta try it.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:47 PM
Pretty weird & scary. What’s wrong with people?
August 10th, 2012 at 10:48 PM
No trial. Kill him now. One bullet. Save the community money and fuck the lawyers. Or just send him to Gen Pop with no protection at a prison in like California or Texas.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:50 PM
I rarely eat fast food. But did make a trip to Wendy’s today. Holy fuck, everything is more expensive now.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:51 PM
Earl Bradley was his name if you even wanted to know. Dude made Sandusky look like a fucking saint.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:51 PM
how the F could anyone even watch that? they can die in the same fire as the doctor himself.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:52 PM
It did kinda evolve the last couple of years. The “meal deals” ain’t as attractive as they were before.
Makes me wanna get the George Foreman out every week and make my own burgers.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:53 PM
how the F could anyone even watch that? they can die in the same fire as the doctor himself.
You want to know the worst part of that? The judges and lawyers had to view that shit. And the fucking judge (keep in mind he’s from that county, too) took 7 hours to view that shit. 7 hours. Why do you need 7 hours to see that shit? You see one second, say he’s guilty. Done.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
Can’t make a spicy chicken sandwich with that…
August 10th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
That’s all it would need. Sick dude like that needs to be terminated.
OT: Nats-DBacks. Strasburg throws a mid-90s heater. Montero fouls it straight back. Suzuki fans on it, and it hits the ump flush in the jaw. Dale Scott looks out on his feet. On his way to the clubhouse.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:57 PM
I was just thinking that if I was a cop or someone in that position, I don’t think I could watch it.
I remember hearing about a movie called A Serbian Film that’s supposed to be one of the most graphic ever made. Had some similar type things in it. Just reading the synopsis on Wikipedia during the work day caused me to walk out and nearly puke. And I’m not that sensitive either, I dont think.
August 10th, 2012 at 10:58 PM
It heats up, don’t it? Heck, I’ve cooked tilapia (not breaded) on a George. Guys being guys, we find a way to make it work.

Come on “work” day! End! Or I will stab you! I’ve done 13 emails today, so I’ve done about 25 minutes worth of work.

Romney to name his VP running mate tomorrow. I’m holding out hope it’s Michele “Bat Shit Crazy” Bachmann. That would be fun. She and Rollo’s SIL probably would get along great.

Speaking of the SIL, what was up with the new account spamming threads with that name? Who has the time to do that?

Thanks, WU, I was pretty sure he had some Memphis connection.

Chilly, I’m not. Born & reared there, and go back periodically. Will probably go back in Oct. Keep watching this site – next time I’m back there, I’ll offer up a round to whomever is in the area.

Nolan Ryan > Rex Ryan > Jack Ryan > Private Ryan > Jeri Ryan > Rob Ryan > Irene Ryan > Paul Ryan > Bob Ryan > Meg Ryan.
August 11th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
That must be the present day Meg Ryan at the end of that list because there’s no way in hell you’d rank Meg Ryan circa 1998 that low.
