At least Ventura does it very, very rarely…beats the days of Ozzie thinking “smallball” was the reason they won a championship instead of the truth (lots of HRs and pitching out of their minds) so it never really went away (the worst being when trailing late)

I could even make a case for the first one since with his speed there could be an expectation to get on…but the second is what led the cosmos to end the Tribe’s losing streak today

Today my thoughts keep going back to my hatred of bunting, think Ventura cost them a chance at building a lead last night because of an ill-advised call (1st and 2nd, nobody out and Danks hitting with a AAA bum behind him)…the worst in those situations where the bunter (who in this case hadn’t been asked to do it since being called up) fails is that the announcers never question the decision since sometime long ago it was simply decided that bunting is one of those “that’s playing the game the right way” things and are sure to point out that they agree with the call for a few minutes after

Washington is not a good manager. His team wins in spite of him a lot.

Bucs bullpen blew a game late for the first time this year (literally, they were something absurd like 52-0 when leading after 7), but somehow it didn’t cost them with everyone else (Cincy, ATL, St Louis and LA) losing. So I got that going for me.

The owners are running a franchise, which they hope to be an attractive player destination. You want to be able to tell your first round draft pick pitcher or your big free agent that you will always put the health of the player and the best current medical practices ahead of the team’s short term goals. And you want to be able to point to Jordan Zimmerman and Stephen Strasburg as exhibits A and B.

Let me just re-iterate what I saw in person Sunday afternoon. Tie game, top of 9th, and Rangers get man to 3rd with no outs on a steal attempt where throw went to outfield. Top of the lineup up-Andrus, Young, Hamilton. No outs, again. Chances of scoring from there have to be pretty good.

I wouldn’t be concerned about the pitching. They lead just about every stat, cumulative and rate, in pitching in the NL
