Kobe Bryant’s Olympic Struggles
Team USA is 5-0 in Olympic playing heading into the medal round. First up: Australia in the quarterfinals. I haven’t seen a spread yet, but I’d imagine it is in the ballpark of 40. If Andrew Bogut were playing … I’d reduce that to 35. After Team USA’s 126-97 destruction of Argentina Monday, when everyone was talking about Carmelo getting hit in the nuts and Kevin Durant’s awesome 3-point performance, this story slipped through the cracks: Kobe Bryant is struggling.
He’s clearly forcing shots and at times, struggling to get to the basket (two offensive fouls vs. Argentina). He’s the only player on Team USA shooting under 40 percent from the field (14-of-36, 38 percent). He’s got just seven rebounds in five games – Carmelo Anthony, who has been playing some power forward, has eight offensive boards. Kobe’s the only player besides center Anthony Davis with more turnovers (5) than assists (4). In his last two games, Kobe is 4-for-17 shooting.
Before Lakers fans freak out … obviously, this isn’t a big deal. LeBron is The Man on the team, as evidenced by the end of the Lithuania game and the start of the 2nd half vs. Argentina (not to mention that he’s the best player in the NBA). Kevin Durant, if given open looks, will destroy you from deep (20-of-33, 60 percent on 3-pointers) and Carmelo Anthony has proven he’s capable of the same (15-of-25 from deep).
Frankly, Team USA could start Kobe, play him for the first eight minutes, and sit him the rest of the game and it is unlikely anyone would notice. In fact, I bet Mike Brown would love it if Kobe got some extra rest. Between 82 games next season and possibly another 15-20 before the NBA Finals, the soon-to-be 34-year-old might finally show signs of slowing down. With Steve Nash in the mix, the Lakers will be title contenders.
And Team USA has other concerns, anyway. Like how thin they are inside, and what that could mean against Spain in the gold medal game.

pretty sure that has already happened.

Spread’s 23 points.
August 7th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Which seems low but that’s the only one I can find.

Even when it’s not about MJ, it’s always about MJ.

I’ll give Kobe a pass for his effort. He’s old.
Think the best lineup would be Paul-Iggy-Durant-Lebron-Tyson. Wish they would use that more (some?).

Carl Lewis > Kobe Bryant

Outplayed Durant in the playoffs, so this must have happened overnight. Probably needs to have his knee drained. Fortunately he already earned his five rings so his legacy is intact.
August 7th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
I wonder, from an ego perspective, does he even admit this to himself?
August 7th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Categorically false.
August 7th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
how could he? mentally, he’s as sharp as ever. he knows so much more about basketball and how to attack opponents than he did back in the day, it’s a damn shame his body can’t keep up. it’s not his brain or ego that’ll tell him it’s time to hang it up for good reason…that shit won’t be gone for awhile.

Bench Kobe, no more minutes in the Olympics

I re-installed Firefox on my work computer after a few months of just using IE (I need to keep IT off my back). What’s weird is that something in this site’s HTML causes it to freeze everytime when loading up the home page. I only say it’s weird because usually IE is the problem browser.

Some? He’s been playing the 4 and 5 throughout.

St. Bear, check the error console in FF. That will give you an idea of the issue.

…which is what I alluded to. Happens to stars in every sport. When he turns 60, he’ll still see the game better than most. His body, however, can’t go on at this pace forever.
I could look up the number of playoff games he’s played, but I just don’t feel like it. Maybe equivalent of another 2-3 full seasons added to his career? Wear and tear catches up to everyone.
This Olympics may be a place where he starts to see the end of the journey.
In the Association, yeah he can still tear it up when healthy. Heaven forbid he struggles with a nagging injury during the upcoming season.

There’s a whole bunch of “Unknown property ‘zoom’. Declaration dropped.”, whatever that means.
August 7th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
Taking anything that happens during Team USA’s Olympic coronation run seriously is a fool’s errand.
I mean, Carmelo (CARMELO!) looks like a team leader! If that don’t say it all….

googling is the first thing to go

I see the same thing. I think they have malformed cascading style sheets and some HTML issues
August 7th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
What’s also readily apparent is how much the team struggles as soon as Deron Williams comes in. He’s sucked for a while now, since leaving Sloan’s system.
August 7th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
That’s the sample size of 1-1.5 games for Kobe.
I’m not sure you’re making the point you are trying to, suggesting that a PF has more rebounds than a SG.
August 7th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
It causes Firefox to freeze completely, and I have to close it using Task Manager. When I was using Firefox before, I never had this issue.

famous jargon joke
“Ok, I don’t like to gear my material to the audience but I’d like to make an exception because I was told that there is a convention of plumbers in San Francisco this week – I understand about 30 of them came down to the show tonight – so before I came out I worked-up a joke especially for the plumbers. Those of you who aren’t plumbers probably won’t get this and won’t think it’s funny, but I think those of you who are plumbers will really enjoy this…
“This lawn supervisor was out on a sprinkler maintenance job and he started working on a Findlay sprinkler head with a Langstrom 7″ gangly wrench. Just then, this little apprentice leaned over and said, “You can’t work on a Findlay sprinkler head with a Langstrom 7″ wrench.” Well this infuriated the supervisor, so he went and got Volume 14 of the Kinsley manual, and he reads to him and says, “The Langstrom 7″ wrench can be used with the Findlay sprocket.” Just then, the little apprentice leaned over and said, “It says sprocket not socket!”

This may be it, because when I go to the Adobe site to update, it freezes.
Does make it kind of hard to update, though.

Kobe is trying to force offense in the limited amount of time he’s playing. He sees it as him getting himself ready for the Gold Medal game when the team is going to need him. Whether
August 7th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
not me, steve martin
August 7th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Kobe’s one of my favorite players of all time but he’s done now. He doesn’t have to be done, but because of the way he plays he’s done. Manu has to have about the same mileage as Kobe but he’s not done cause he chooses to be a team player and impact the game every way he can and not just by scoring as much as he can.

Actually he was dropping it off to pay a golf gambling debt…3 a side? sure.
August 7th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
??? If you factor in injuries and missed games, Kobe has played 8 more years worth of NBA seasons. And Kobe is done? he averaged 15 more PPG last season than Ginobli.
August 7th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
This is just fuckin insane!
Durant vs. Kobe
TS%: 65% – 52%
eFG%: 60% – 43%
TRB% 13% – 8%
Ast%: 27% – 22%
Stl%: 1.7% – 2.3%
Blk%: 1% – 0%
ORtg: 126 – 109 (!!)
DRtg 96 – 114 (!!)
But, go ahead and talk to me about how he gutted some shit out or provided leadership or whatever other bullshit, nebulous intangibles he provided.
August 7th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
Scalia, I’m talking about in their head to head series. Kobe outscored him and shot a similar percentage (with a worse supporting cast)
August 7th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Those numbers were from their “head to head series”
See Respective usage rates.
False. (efg%: 60% vs. 43%)
August 7th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
I see cursedcleveland continues to be a jackass who makes outright false claims to try and prop up Kobe
August 7th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
False claims? name one
August 7th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
You’re addressing claims I never made. You must love posting on message boards.
August 7th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
So you never claimed they shot a similar percentage? Because this
sounds like you are. In which case, 60% is not similar to 43%. What am I missing here?
August 7th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Like my man Winston Churchill said: “Statistics are like a drunk with a lampost: used more for support than illumination.” The list below are the point guards in the NBA who are better than Rajon Rondo according to PER.
1 Chris Paul, LAC
2 Derrick Rose, CHI
3 Russell Westbrook, OKC
4 Tony Parker,
5 Kyrie Irving, CLE
6 Stephen Curry, GS
7 Deron Williams, NJ
8 Steve Nash, PHX
9 Lou Williams, PHI
10 Jeremy Lin, NY
11 Ty Lawson, DEN
12 Kyle Lowry, HOU
13 Brandon Jennings, MIL
14 Nate Robinson, GS
15 Goran Dragic, HOU
16 Jarrett Jack, NO
17 Jerryd Bayless, TOR
18 John Wall, WSH
19 Isaiah Thomas, SAC
20 Rodney Stuckey, DET

Oh, you know, that Kobe “outplayed Durant in the playoffs.” Laughable. Durant was killer in the clutch up until the finals, meanwhile Kobe was choking away winnable games in that Thunder series.
You always do shit like that. I remember one time you said Jordan had way more bad Finals games than Kobe ever did, which is also laughable when you look at the facts…

He’s an old bitch now. Starting to slide like MJ did at the end of his career. Hate to say it, but it’s inevitable.
August 8th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Just stop. You’re looking more and more foolish as you go. And apparently, you’re the one who likes to hear himself talk.
