USA Beats Canada 4-3 On Alex Morgan Header, Advances to Gold Medal Match With Japan
A fitting end to a thrilling match. Alex Morgan scored on a dramatic header in the 122nd minute, giving the United States a 4-3 win over Canada in extra time and advancing them to the Gold Medal match against Japan. It will be a rematch of the 2011 Women’s World Cup Final.
The U.S. were resilient, coming back from a goal down three times in the match, though, to be fair, they were a bit fortunate. Megan Rapinoe’s corner slipping into the net was the product of luck and awful defending (though her second goal was a genuine golazo). Both the time-wasting call to set up the indirect free kick and the penalty awarded against Canada on the third U.S. goal were poor decisions. An exhausted Canada team had little to offer once the match hit extra time.
Hat tip to Canada’s star striker Christine Sinclair, who had three excellent goals. Canada had not beaten the U.S. since March 2001 and will be absolutely heartbroken.

heartbroken is an understatement… we Canadians haven’t medalled in a teams sport since 1936, and to have beaten the Americans would have been a fitting way to finally get that medal.

Jeebus, I’ve been stuck in the same meeting since 8 a.m., and the only thing anyone’s decided is that maybe they don’t really want the project we’ve been working on since last fall and have spent upwards of $50,000 on.
And this meeting is scheduled to run on for the next two days.
I envy Rollo. At least the sweet release of death is a possiblity for him.

Duffy – are these people just crazy Penn State fans, or should we actually proceed with discussing the legitimacy of the people who have a grievance with the way the NCAA/Freeh Report dicked over PSU?

too soon.

A normal PSU fan like me got over it quickly because shit happens and life isn’t fair sometimes. It’s the minority that are batshit crazy that get’s the attention.

Now seems like a good time to announce Alex Morgan and I are engaged. She doesn’t know it yet, but it’s true.

That is a bald-faced lie, sir. I know, because she is my own true betrothed.

The first problem was making a meeting that long. That’s ridiculous.
August 6th, 2012 at 6:43 PM
Will probably go into it into a post tomorrow, but there was agreement between Penn State’s president and the NCAA. Not sure that “the Freeh report was wrong” without naming specific reasons and “the penalties are unfair” is really a substantial case for the federal injunction it sounds like they are aiming for.
August 6th, 2012 at 7:47 PM
I love that this will go to court. Finally taking uninformed public opinion out of the equation.
BTW, replay of this game is on NBC sn right now. Two minutes left in second ot.
August 6th, 2012 at 7:48 PM
Duffy, I think the trustees are saying the president lacked the authority to agree to the sanctions without board approval. Which I’m almost certain is true.
August 6th, 2012 at 8:01 PM
This site has been nothing if not dismissive of people who thought, on legal grounds or otherwise, that the president overstepped his bounds and that the Freeh report was never given its due examination. It will be refreshing to see TBL actually engage in the counter-point side of this issue.
This. This is really one of the two grievances I have. As a non-PSU person, all i care about is did the President have the authority to do this, and has anyone seriously challenged the findings of the Freeh Report. Looks like both of these questions will now play out.

hey canada – we’ll trade you this win for the men’s hockey final in 2010. deal?
August 6th, 2012 at 11:32 PM
Canada was robbed by poor officiating. those two “poor calls” were part of a cheating ref’s agenda. NBC is loving this. They will have a ratings boon from the rematch with Japan.
