it’s a fucking rush knowing that the onus is entirely on you. even if your opponent chokes, that still doesn’t seal the deal…gotta put the knife in yourself. no teammates to fall back on.

I can fully back that opinion. I know I have more fun when every 3rd whole requires a beer. I bet the pros would too. Would definitely get more casual viewers if Tiger was shitfaced by the 12th hole and John Daly was crushing bitches with no tolerance.

Golf sounds strange, because in every sport I have ever played you can most assuredly get better by playing against inferior opposition. My tennis game improves more rapidly when I’m coaching high school players because it makes me think about what I’m doing instead of relying on muscle memory.

golf’s different because you can’t influence the opponent directly. you can only hide flaws in your game so much that eventually they’ll get exposed. a stronger player already knows how to deal with the situations a shitty player finds themselves in so it’s hard to learn anything new.

current college players, club pros/assistant pros, or anyone else who has the luxury of playing/practicing anytime they want aren’t “just guys.”

but yet, they’re playing in amateur tournaments so someone must consider them “just guys.”

i hate it…there’s no reason college golfers should be considered amateurs considering they’re earning a scholarship and practice facilities due to their game.

So why are those guys playing with you? Do they not want to get better? Not that you are a bad player, but you’ve said they are better than you.

i think you and i have different definitions of “just guys.”

current college players, club pros/assistant pros, or anyone else who has the luxury of playing/practicing anytime they want aren’t “just guys.” that’s why i questioned your statement. i don’t doubt you play or know a handfull of excellent players, but once real life starts to cut down on how dedicated you can be to the game, you’re not likely “just a guy” firing -6 under every other week.

it really doesn’t anymore…i was talking with the pro at the course they’re hosting this week’s cleveland amateur at this weekend and said there are a few HS/college aged kids who’ll probably fire up a 65 or 66. and this is in the tundra, not florida, cali or texas.

LOL! Like that matters. At one club in town there are EIGHT former State AM champs. 8. At my rinky-dink club, there are 6 D1 and 4 D2 players. The level of golf here is ASTOUNDING. Good courses, good instructors, good players. One of my buddies just finished 6th in the Club Championship (which I have NO chance of winning)–the week after he finished 4th in the city championship. My assistant pro missed the cut at a Nationwide event last year by a shot. He plays with us a little, but he’s a legit player–not just a dude. One of the local D1′s shot 63 in the Monday qual of a Nationwide Event this year, then made the cut on the number–he’s not the club champ at his course. If “none of them would ever say this” they aren’t playing with enough good players. I can’t imagine “top notch” AMs would think EVEN could win a side.

i know a lot of top-notch “leisure” players and none of them would ever say this.

I play in a BIG money game about once a month on Wednesday afternoons at a club about 45 minutes away. I’m below a 1, headed back to a + hdcp. VERY OFTEN, out of 16 guys, I’m clearly the worst player. And these are just guys. Not mini-tour players, nothing. Just guys. I mean, there are some accomplishments in that group–all of us have gotten to at least the last 32 in the state AM at one point or another, but not like it’s tour pros. You want to win a side? Better shoot 32. Even par makes you a BIG donater. So, I donate. But damn it’s fun to watch guys shoot 65, even if that makes my 68 seem shitty. I’ll be back down there soon. Rededicated myself to the game. my 7 year old boy (who can freakin PLAY) loves it and so he’s happy to go chip and putt for 3 hours with Dad and then play 6 holes, which is nice. And my 4 year old daughter is more athletic than him, and asks every night “Can we go to the golf course Daddy?” I’ve given myself to June 1 to be back to +. Diet, fitness, everything tracking for that. Nightly stretching, really working on ankle and thoracic spine mobility.

What’s the reason for the big improvement, Urinal? Seemed like you’d hit the wall a while back?

Made a small swing change a couple of weeks ago and it’s made a huge difference with ball striking.
