Hall of Fame Game: New Orleans Saints Open Their Year Without Sean Payton Against the Arizona Cardinals
In 2009, Kurt Warner was targeted by several hard hits in the playoff game against New Orleans. That game is at the center of the “Bountygate” penalties handed down against New Orleans. Now with Sean Payton suspended for the year, the Saints begin their preparations for this season against that same organization. The Arizona team, though, is much different, particularly at quarterback where competition to replace Kurt Warner is still ongoing.
The Hall of Fame game was canceled last year, which only meant that our thirst for football, even in small, hard to swallow drops, was delayed. Now, we get to start this season off, albeit in likely unsatisfactory dosage. Small steps, so you can build up your stamina heading toward September. It’s doubtful you’ll need to engage in a three hour football marathon here.
The key points tonight are the transition for the Saints, who will have Joe Vitt working the sideline ahead of his own suspension, and the depth chart at receiver with Robert Meachem out of the mix. Adrian Arrington, who has 9 career catches, is currently in the top 4 on the depth chart, along with Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, and Lance Moore. Can he sustain training camp success? The opportunity is there, and whoever emerges will be a sleeper. Courtney Roby, who has operated almost exclusively as a special teams player, and rookie Nick Toon, are next on the depth chart.
For the Cardinals, the key issue is the quarterback rotation. Kevin Kolb is likely the leader entering the preseason games, but he’s not guaranteed it if John Skelton outplays him in the preseason. I expect both to get some action this game.
Finally, it is the first game with replacement referees as the league and officials still face off in a labor dispute. I expect more talk than actual proof of any fall off. It is after all, a preseason game with lots of players who won’t be starting in September, and officials–replacement or not–need practice too.
The game starts at 8 eastern time on NFL Network.

I see what you did there. I’m going to have to see about tweeking my work schedule here soon with football gearing up. Highlights the next morning just won’t do.

The AZ QB situation doesnt look good. The money for Kolb looks wasted at this point. Anyone feel like he can be a true # 1

Inappropriate comment.

Fuck yeah Football!

In Lexington, Insight was our cable provider, and they offered the NFL Network. Thankfully (not really), Time Warner Cable bought Insight, and their first move was to remove the NFL Network from the lineup because grown billionaire men are arguing over money, ruining it for the customers who want to watch preseason football. That’s just awesome fucking news.
Goddammit, I absolutely despise the modern telecom industry.
August 5th, 2012 at 7:34 PM
I won’t allow my sons to play football, because that would require being in a shower filled with naked men after the game.

August 5th, 2012 at 7:43 PM
I don’t think he was worth the money, but I believe he can be an above average QB in the NFL. Doesn’t help that the Cards have a horrible line, but IMO the jury is still out for Kolb.

This is how stupid I am.
I have Time-Warner, got it back in February. During NBA season, watched NBA network. During MLB season, have watched MLB network. Since NFL was out of season, did not notice until tonight that I DO NOT HAVE NFL NETWORK FUCK YOU TIME-WARNER YOU FUKCIN’ FUCKHEADS.
I feel really, really stupid. And rather outraged.

I am grateful to not have the NFL Network.
When they argue on NFL network, I don’t know why but it reminds me of little girls bickering back and forth. Other networks can argue, more debate, but NFL Network wouldn’t surprise me if I turn it on and hear them going back and forth saying uh uuuh. Yes huuh. Uh uuuh. Yes huuh.
August 5th, 2012 at 8:05 PM
the dog is giving me the “I gotta go pee” looks.
At least your dog gives you the “I gotta go pee look”
My dog use to just give me the “I just shit look”
He’s gotten a lot better, though. And it sucks because my now exgirlfriend is taking him when she gets back, and I’m the one that put in all the fucking work training him. I feel like that poor bastard on Band of Brothers when his wife sent him a letter saying she was divorcing him, and after he reads it he says “SHE’S TAKING THE DOG!?!? IT’S MY DOG!!!”

I only want it for preseason/Thursday night/Thanksgiving games. So I can watch at home and not get skunked in a sports bar those games.

August 5th, 2012 at 8:16 PM
monster, I can empathize with your loss. Losing a dog in some ways hurts worse than losing a girl. Dogs give such unconditional love and loyalty.
My daughter’s dog has only been here since Friday, and we have bonded a little bit. It’s gonna feel weird when she comes back to get him, unless I just don’t answer the door when she knocks…
August 5th, 2012 at 8:16 PM
If by a large part you mean 3 games then it was because there weren’t any better options. Whiz messed up in signing Horseballs and then cut Leinart. When DA sucked as bad as he did Whiz turned to the local kid and gave him a shot thy quickly failed.
August 5th, 2012 at 8:16 PM
And that statement is, the Cardinals’ defense sucks.
August 5th, 2012 at 8:17 PM

Any St. Louisians in the house tonight? I’ll be out there for a few days next week and looking for suggestions on restaurants, etc. We’ll be working/staying out near South County Mall. Plan on going to the Cards game next Wed. night.
Unfortunately tomorrow I have a day trip to Norfolk. Have to get up at 4 am to catch the flight down.

I’m going to argue this point. Cardinals defense will be top 10 this year.
Never! As painful as it is I’m a Cardinals fan and proud.
August 5th, 2012 at 8:44 PM
This game is quickly becoming as dreadful as, well, a preseason NFL game.
Can we have Brees back in, please?

Yeah, let me know when you’re in town. I got a few nice places to recommend. How much you looking to spend and do you have anything you’re NOT a fan of? And by South County Mall, do you mean the Crestwood Mall?

No – I know it’s called South County Mall. It’s essentially at the intersection of 55/270. As for costs, it doesn’t matter too much. We’ll be on the company/client dime. Typically though we limit meals to the $15-$20 range though (plus the bar bill).
August 5th, 2012 at 8:48 PM
Mullet will die in a fiery Coop-ddmcd sandwich.
August 5th, 2012 at 8:49 PM
Not from the Lou but my company HQ is there so I have been enough. Rigazzi’s in the Hill district is fantastic. One of the best italian joints I’ve ever been to.
August 5th, 2012 at 8:50 PM

My knowledge of St. Louis is pretty much limited to the Arch, the Holiday Inn downtown near the Arch, and Baldwin.
August 5th, 2012 at 8:51 PM
No bias necessary. I can’t believe how bad Kolb is.
August 5th, 2012 at 8:52 PM
Mullet will die in a fiery Coop-ddmcd sandwich.
That probably tastes like hesitation and regret.

“The safety squats”
I was hoping that would be followed by “and he punches a biscuit.”
/ Or, as vez would have it, “punches a grumpy”
August 5th, 2012 at 8:52 PM
OK, so Kolb has bruised ribs. Gonna miss at least a bit of time in pre-season. Is Skelton gonna be the starter opening day? Does that make the Cards a better team?
August 5th, 2012 at 8:53 PM
That sounds like a line Sinatra would sing.
August 5th, 2012 at 8:55 PM

August 5th, 2012 at 8:55 PM
Question 1: I sure as fuck hope so.
Question 2: Undeniably, yes (but not by much)
August 5th, 2012 at 8:56 PM
Willie Roaf is a rather large specimen of human being. I saw him out one night at Cat’s Meow. He is a big, big man.
August 5th, 2012 at 8:56 PM
Andy Reid’s system makes QB’s look like the second coming of Montana
August 5th, 2012 at 8:56 PM
Personally I think they both suck. Skelton is wildly inaccurate, but plays well in the 4th quarter and led the team to a few Ws last year with a ton of help from PP21 and a strong defense. Kolb seems to have the better pedigree but has happy feet and can’t seem to stay in the pocket. It’s split pretty evenly among Cardinals fans on who they prefer.
August 5th, 2012 at 8:57 PM
Hey, St. Louis people, is what we’re seeing now what we can generally expect from a Spags defense?
August 5th, 2012 at 8:57 PM
Roethlishotdog: You should at least try an Italian joint in The Hill neighborhood while you’re here. Actually, I found a Spanish-Italian hybrid place that’s in your dollar range. And I also found you an inexpensive Greek joint: Olympia Kebob House. And because I’ve become an STL dessert honk, I gotta recommend you and pals try some frozen custard at a Ted Drewes.

August 5th, 2012 at 9:00 PM
Hey, St. Louis people, is what we’re seeing now what we can generally expect from a Spags defense?
Unsure. He had mediocre players to begin with, outside of Road Warrior Animal’s kid and Howie Long’s son, and those other guys kept getting injured, so he was dealt a shitty hand on defense. He made the most with what he had, I guess. And he coached up the Giants a few years back, so take that for what it’s worth.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:01 PM
Well, give sports fans a choice between sports and the Olympics, and they’ll choose sports.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:02 PM

August 5th, 2012 at 9:09 PM
Because Fits is GOAT. Yeah i said it.
/Cardinals fan bias’d
August 5th, 2012 at 9:09 PM
That is impressive. I’m surprised it was that much. Admittedly, I didn’t track the Cardinals that close last season. Kinda expected the total to be less, and expected Fitzgerald to kick up a stink wanting more touches.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:11 PM
Fitzy is ahead of pace on everyone’s numbers except for Rice’s TD mark. If he stays healthy, there’s no reason to think he won’t be at or close to every receiving record. Especially if he ever gets a half decent QB.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:11 PM
For me, Tim Brown oughta be in sooner rather than later, for his return skills and his WR work. I’m non-committal on Cris Carter. I don’t think Andre Reed is gonna get in for a while, since a few Bills of that era are already in.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:12 PM

August 5th, 2012 at 9:17 PM
Thats why I hoped Arizona would land Peyton, and I honestly thought they had a chance in the beginning. The thought of Peyton to Fitz is orgasmic.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:17 PM
With some quick research, only Rice, Holt and Moss surpassed 10,000 yards by age 30. Fitz turns 29 the end of August and sits at 9,615. With his production there’s no reason he shouldn’t end up top 10 in yards when it’s all said and done.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:17 PM
“And five years after he retires, he’ll have a bust there.”
Will the Brees bust include that big birthmark?
August 5th, 2012 at 9:19 PM
I don’t think Holt has a shot at the HOF any time soon, simply because of the backup discussed earlier. Maybe it’s not fair, but Rice and Moss are probably perceived to be a level above him. That could happen to Fitzgerald as well, especially if he doesn’t get a QB any time soon.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:19 PM
Nada, It was on Friday as well. She was so gorgeous. In “Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House”, she was too sexy.

“Reports coming from the locker room are, Kolb sustained a sizeable anal contusion at the hands of rather inept NFL defense. We hear he’s in the shower now, so it may get worse.”

Hilarious! Just don’t let Walking Underwear see that. He took unkindly to that Joepa spoof post earlier.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:47 PM
FYI, SROD, Yojimbo:A Fistful of Dollars::Seven Samurai:The Magnificent Seven. And in both cases, the original is vastly superior to the remake.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:48 PM
Ya know, if you never play extended snaps, no one can say for certain that you suck.
As long as Kolb keeps getting hurt, he will always have “potential”.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:52 PM
I’ve seen bits of Fistful and Magnificent Seven, and enjoyed the parts I’ve seen. Over the years, I’ve heard many say the originals were much better. I am big-time looking forward to seeing the originals this week.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:52 PM
Vez is a standup guy. One of the TBL old guard came into TBLAD the other night and demanded an end to the coop’d meme, and vez basically told him to go Twat himself.
Also, he’s a lethal assassin.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:54 PM
Based on the limited number of snaps he got, I am comfortable in saying that JaCarcass Bustall sucks.
In regardsto actual NFL QBs, however, you probably have a point.
August 5th, 2012 at 9:55 PM
Vez, you still here? Did you see the mentally disturbed douchebag ex-boyfriend this weekend?
August 5th, 2012 at 9:57 PM
Whenever I hear about JaMarcus, I can’t help but think of purple drank. Always makes me laugh. And yep, he did suck.
I’ve never done drank, but I have taken a nip or two of NyQuil when I thought I might possibly come down with a cold…the following week or so…lol

Why? It’s a harmless joke.

August 5th, 2012 at 10:04 PM
Back in 2000, I dated a lady who told me “the listed dose isn’t enough for a guy your size. You should take 1.5x or even 2x the normal dose.”
She shouldn’t have suggested that. “Lights out” is exactly what it is.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:04 PM
Methinks the old guard gets crotchety when a meme becomes popular and they didn’t come up with it.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:06 PM
My sister the nurse tells me the same thing about medications based on my body mass. I willingly take her advice.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:06 PM
Smallie, you gotta breathe, brotha. At least you have hope with Kolb. Coulda been worse. Coulda been Kyle Boller.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:07 PM
Nah. I didnt go.
Thanks for the kind words
August 5th, 2012 at 10:10 PM
I actually turned the channel after Kolb hurt his vagina. I don’t think Kolb is any good, but I think he’s better than Skelton. And they could still have Derek Anderception as the QB so it could definitely be worse.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:11 PM
SROD, who do the Chargers have if something happens to Rivers? Whitehurst?
August 5th, 2012 at 10:13 PM
Smallie, did you ever get your AC issue fixed? I think it was AC, something with a line icing up?
August 5th, 2012 at 10:16 PM
Yeah, there were a bunch of issues. AC unit was 30 years old so in the end it made more sense to replace than to repair. I have a sunroom that was added after the central air was put in so we had them add a vent to the back room, which has been nice. Funny though, there were 2 brick walls and a metal plate in between that took 4 hours to cut through and put the vent in.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:20 PM
This is not the summer to be having AC issues, though.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:20 PM

August 5th, 2012 at 10:22 PM
Although I doubt there’s much of one on her.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:23 PM
True but I knew it was coming. My furnace blew up 2 winters ago, and we knew then that it was only a matter of time before the AC followed suit. It made it through last summer, and we were hoping to get this summer out of it too, but no dice. Not the end of the world, the new AC unit is significantly better than the old one.

After Whitehurst, the roster shows Kevin O’Connell (who was a backup in NE for a cup of coffee) and LSU’s Jarrett Lee.
Now, I feel uneasy. Picking at Kolb earlier could mean karma comes back as a Rivers season-ending injury.

a chicago doc today died trying to save two kids from drowning in lake michigan. he leaves three kids of his own, 10, 7, 3.
my feeling is that because he has three kids, at those ages, not in their 20s, it was highly irresponsible to risk his life.
single, i would have risked my life for those in need. since kids, no way

August 5th, 2012 at 10:34 PM
I think that you don’t think in such a situation, vez, you just react. And the guy’s obvious gut reaction was, save them.
It’s like Joe Delaney trying to save those kids when he couldn’t even swim himself. He simply reacted.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:34 PM
I don’t have kids, but I would probably try to save the kids too. I’m not sure having kids of any age would change that.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:34 PM
You guys are good. Real good.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:37 PM
the TBLAD moral dilemma of the night, best answered by parents, is what would you do?
It depends. Were these kids screaming “ALLAHU AKBAR” as they were floating down the river?
August 5th, 2012 at 10:37 PM
If Jarrett Lee can make it to the NFL, then I sure as fuck can make it. I’m just as white, awkward, and unathletic as that fuckin dick hole. I’m mad as shit just thinkin about that cock gobbler wearing an NFL uniorm.

August 5th, 2012 at 10:43 PM
To be fair, Lee was having a pretty good season last year until he ran into Bama in the first game. Miles completely fucked up how he handled the situation from there on out, and word is he refused to play Lee in the NC game because they had a blowup late in the season over the whole matter.
I guess what I’m saying is, he got zero coaching at LSU, and if he actually gets some coaching in the NFL, Lee might pan out as a decent backup.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:43 PM
i get the instinct to save folks. like i said, i’d hero it up all day….single. but to place your family in that situation, choosing a stranger over your kids?
easy choice for me, now
August 5th, 2012 at 10:45 PM
That was definitely a case where you not only don’t jump for the rescue, you actually push the head below the surface and hold it there if you can.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:46 PM
hell yeah. i’ve been on team maroney this whole time.

August 5th, 2012 at 10:46 PM
Nada, to be fair, I’m a Bama fan.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:48 PM
to be fair, it’s hard to say what you would do until you’re in that situation. My guess is instinct would take over for most of us.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:52 PM
vez, you make a great point about the kids left without a dad. But, I don’t know if I could stand by and watch innocent kids drown without trying to do something. I can’t put down anyone who thinks of his own family first, though.
My two are in their 20s. Conceptually, I would say yes. You never know how you are gonna react in that moment, though.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:53 PM
The battle was well met, sir, but I think we would have prevailed in the rematch if only Les Miles had developed a game plan that did not consist entirely of “give Jefferson the ball and see what happens.” And stick with it even after the deer-in-the-headlight first half it produced.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:54 PM
What I’m saying, Mullet, is you guys have a much, much better coach.
August 5th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
So how many episodes of Toddlers and Tiara’s do you guys have on your DVR’s?
August 5th, 2012 at 10:56 PM

which instinct, the protect my family one, or the hero one?
August 5th, 2012 at 10:57 PM

August 5th, 2012 at 11:04 PM
vez, you make a great point about the kids left without a dad.
it’s possible that my own dad-less upbringing (after 7 saw him once) affects my feelings, but idk…it still seems natural to not risk leaving your kids w/o a parent, especially for a stranger. no qualms at all with my feelings on this

August 5th, 2012 at 11:11 PM
Vez,
I don’t think there’s a lot of risk/reward analysis going on in that situation. I do, however, live by the credo that a man has to know his limitations. If I was in that situation and I resonably believed I could save those kids, I’d jump in. If not, I dial 911 and hope.
Sorry to hear about not having a dad growing up. My dad was/is far from the greatest but we always had a roof over our heads and food in our mouthes.
August 5th, 2012 at 11:11 PM
Your experience opens up a discussion avenue that I wrestle with daily.
Premise: A stable dad in the home makes a difference in a child’s life, to the point where it can be a direct impact on the local community (writ large, of course).
As much as single moms like mine, yours, etc., sacrificed and tried to fill the role, guys being around for their kids fill a niche moms just can’t fill.
In no way do I mean to insult anyone in any present-day family configuration or circumstance. But I do wonder how my life would have been different if my dad had been in the home (my folks divorced when I was 9).
And, his not being there then definitely shaped how I look at my own kids, even though they are adults now. It shaped so many things about my own character, how I deal with women (not as a misogynist), etc.

I like Mayock, when he’s not so self-referent. Nessler has a solid track record, but maybe he is just bored with pre-season games.
They were about as solid as the play on the field. I expect ‘em to do better once the season starts.

srod, would love to shoot the fatherless shit over some colorado craft beers. it has been a huge part of my psyche affecting i believe just about all i’ve done, some good some bad.
still does, as i married and had kids, thankfully two boys here i can try to be what he wasn’t. still we all know that having a dad around can be worse than not, depending on the dad.
can’t say i’d have it different, only that now he’d been dead since the late 80s, i wish he and i could do things that sons do with their older dads….i suppose it’s the same except drinking cocktails that they do when everyone’s younger

Okay, here’s the deal: when you decide to post the whole story, you need to make multiple appearances throughout the day, popping into posts saying, “tonight’s the night.” That way you get a maximum audience. Maybe we break a thousand on TBLAD for the first time in a long while.
Just make sure we got a Notre Dame post to do it in….
