Gabby Douglas: Olympic Gold Medal in the Gymnastics All-Around Competition
Gabby Douglas, the 16-year-old gymnast, captured gold in the All-Around competition in London, narrowly edging out Russia’s Victoria Komova in a thrilling competition. (NBC didn’t show it, and won’t until tonight, but if you watched the BBC feed, you were able to enjoy it.) Douglas finished with a score of 62.232; Komova a 61.973. American Alex Raisman finished 4th. [UPDATE: Raisman actually tied for 3rd with a Russian, but for reasons that are not quite clear, was awarded 4th place. The word "execution" is being thrown around as a possible reason. Seems vague. Stay tuned.]
According to Christine Brennan of USA Today, Douglas became the first African-American All-Around champ in Olympic history. The scores from Douglas:
Floor: 15.033
Vault: 15.96
Bars: 15.733
Beam: 15.5
Komova went last on the floor, and was virtually flawless, but her routine was not nearly as complex, and Douglas edged her out for gold. Douglas is the first American woman to win gold in both the team & individual all-around.

Raisman was so close for Bronze
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:27 PM
haven’t watched much of the games, but wow, that was exciting stuff. ratings will be huge tonight.
heck, i might watch it again!
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Yes! I just checked the scores on ESPN. Raisman had the same exact score as the Russian. WTF. Judges are corrupt!
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:27 PM
It’s outstanding listening to the BBC announcers kill every piece of the Americans’ routines but slobber over the British gymnasts.
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:29 PM
From ESPN.com:
1 USA Gabrielle Douglas 62.232
2 RUS Victoria Komova 61.973
3 RUS Aliya Mustafina 59.566
4 USA Alexandra Raisman 59.566
what’s the tie-breaker that gave the commie the Bronze?

I sure hope I hear a lot about HER SISTER tonight! Trautwig won’t STFU about it.
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Tiebreaker is you drop the lowest of the four scores for each and whoever has the highest after that wins.
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Should there be ties in the team finals in London, the lowest apparatus score will be dropped and the remaining scores added. If that doesn’t break the tie, additional apparatus scores will be dropped, one at a time, until there is a winner. If no winner emerges, the tie stands.

I love the Olympics. It’s one of the few places where helicopter parents get praised.

Craig James will not let this aggression stand.
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:43 PM
i keep seeing the word “execution” on twitter.
sounds pretty weak. i assume there will be an appeal of some sort?
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:44 PM
The juiceheads had to whip it out for measuring.
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:45 PM
LOL. It’s probably in the rulebook, not exactly something you can appeal.
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Nope. It was on Twitter, so it’s fact.

if that’s accurate – might be, no idea – why are all the reporters raising a stink about it?
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:49 PM
One, that’s wrong, it’s not execution. Execution is the tiebreaker for individual apparatus events, NOT for the all around.
Two, it’s the rules, so no.
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Because they’re idiots.

Because they cover gymnastics once every four years and don’t have a clue.

August 2nd, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Fridzon’s buzzer beater 3-pointer was the tie breaker. Mustafina is going to make one helluva Russian dancer in Moscow for KHL players in about 2-3 years.
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:55 PM
Seems to defeat the purpose of an “All-Around” title. Should drop the highest score.
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:56 PM
J-Mac’s getting to the bottom of this injustice!
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:56 PM
No one comprehends the comments.
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Eh, reasoning is the same, just get rid of one outlier in either direction to get a better overall picture. But yeah.
Either way her beam routine was really safe so this is her fault alone.
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:58 PM
These new tie breaking rules are apparantly why there was a gold and 2 silvers in that swimming event a couple days ago
August 2nd, 2012 at 1:59 PM
Because they don’t know what the hell they are talking about or anything about the sport they are covering? Dude, we already explained to you that they drop lowest score per apparatus until the tie is resolved. What is so hard to understand about that? It’s the sports way of rewarding the high scores (i.e. great performances on a rotation) and culling the bag ones. Just because you don’t understand and you see a word on twitter doesn’t mean that the rules weren’t decided long ago.

Good info. Much better than the alternative:

Soooooo, tie in swimming, both swimmers get medal. Tie in gymnastics, there is a tie-breaker? The Olympics!

I don’t get it. So you’re saying Raisman loses the tiebreaker because she killed Steve McNair?

How could you have a tie-breaker in swimming? You’d have to go based on qualifying round scores, which probably doesn’t make sense. In gymnastics, there’s a few fairly logical approaches available.
August 2nd, 2012 at 2:04 PM
It’s a shame the comments will fade into Bolivia in a few months.

The vague word “execution” refers to the execution score, which is one of the two scores they flash on that little score screen for each gymnast. Hope this clears it up.

Maybe someone needs to lay off the twitter machine and perform a fairly easy internet search for the info that you seek. Moreover, you could’ve been a harbinger of sanity to the twitter masses with your new-found tiebreaker info. Hell, it could have gained you a few thousand more followers!
August 2nd, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Execution for individual events.
Lowest apparatus for overall. Mustafina had a 16.1 uneven bars, and got to drop her lowest score. She must have really beamed when she vaulted to the bronze.

Good for her. Ratings will be astronomical tonight and NBC is going to make a fortune. But yeah, they should probably show it live.

I was hoping that search would provide answers…now I’m as puzzled as ever
August 2nd, 2012 at 2:40 PM
I’m sorry, the word you were looking for is “self-righteous”.
August 2nd, 2012 at 2:43 PM
To be fair, a much more reasonable tiebreaker would be to take the higher number of higher scores. So, for instance, Raisman got higher scores in three of the four events. Therefore, she should have probably been awarded the bronze. Makes more sense than pretending events didnt happen.
But really, who cares? It’s gynmastics.
