AFC West New Faces for 2012: From Tracy Porter to Peyton Manning
The new faces in the AFC West for 2012 feature a lot of guys who missed all or almost all of the 2011 season, whether or not they are notably changing teams or not. Kansas City is expecting a rebound because of the sheer number of stars returning, while Denver is planning on getting the old Peyton back. Here are the top ten new faces in the AFC West.
10. CB Tracy Porter, Denver. Three years after his most famous moment coming off the hand of Peyton Manning, Porter joins him in Denver, where he will start opposite Champ Bailey.
9. RB Peyton Hillis, Kansas City. Hillis had a horrible last season in Cleveland after being a revelation the year before, and should quickly become a fan favorite in Kansas City. His presence will allow Jamaal Charles to ease back from a knee injury, and he is an instant upgrade over Thomas Jones.
8. DE Melvin Ingram, San Diego. The Chargers defense has dropped off dramatically the last two years, particularly in generating a pass rush. As a rookie, Ingram will be part of the rotation expected to improve that in 2012.
7. CB Stanford Routt, Kansas City. Routt moves over from division rival Oakland to replace Brandon Carr, who signed with Dallas. Routt looks the part speed wise but doesn’t always show well in advanced analysis. With Brandon Flowers on the opposite side, expect Routt to get tested early.
6. NT Dontari Poe, Kansas City. The most intimate moment of the draft belongs to Poe, and he now brings his talents to a team with needs at nose tackle. Kansas City hopes Poe can handle the position in year one, or it’ll be a bleak December.
5. Former Houston offensive linemen to the AFC West: No team filled need with a talent upgrade as much as the Chiefs adding Eric Winston to address their right tackle needs. Winston’s teammate last year with the Texans, Mike Brisiel, will be the starting right guard for the Oakland Raiders.
4. OLB Jarret Johnson, San Diego. In need of a major influx of pass rush, the Chargers went out and got Johnson from the Ravens and hope that the maturation of other young defensive players, as well as the addition of Ingram and Johnson can change things this year.
3. Front Office Changes for the Silver & Black. The Raid-ahs were Al Davis team since almost the beginning, and so one of the biggest shifts this season will be that Al will not be watching from the stadium. His son Mark Davis immediately brought in the autumn winds of change in the offseason, hiring Reggie McKenzie from the Packers. McKenzie fired head coach Hue Jackson in short order, despite consecutive 8 win seasons. Dennis Allen has been brought in as head coach.
2. Chiefs Stars returning from knee injuries. First round pick from 2010 Eric Berry tore up his knee in the first quarter of the season opener. Jamaal Charles did the same thing in the first quarter of the next game against Detroit. Tony Moeaki was pencilled in as the tight end starter, but tore his ACL in the preseason. All three should be back, and just how quickly they get back will determine how improved Kansas City is in 2012.
1. QB Peyton Manning, Denver. You might have heard of him. He’s now in Denver, in case you missed the news.

All I am saying is that if Peyton goes down in the 1st quarter of the 1st game a lot of people in the Denver area will be going to church to ask for forgiveness in Week 2.

he went down faster than a troubled youth getting a tour of the lasch building from a former defensive coordinator last year…im afraid he was neutered.

Instant upgrade.
Excuse me while I go #3 at my desk.
Good Mark Davis caption, except somewhere far worse than Great Clips is required. I realize that really only leaves ‘handing a meth addict a pair of scissors.’

Hate to threadjack your post Lisk, but I feel like everyone should be made aware of the MLB hacker right now. Some very, very funny stuff. Deadspin has the goods on it.
August 2nd, 2012 at 5:09 PM
And to be on topic, I anticipate this list will include Norv Turner’s replacement next year. They pretty much have to win it all for him to keep the headset, yeah?
August 2nd, 2012 at 5:11 PM
3 in a row? Well, here’s to the revolution finally happening in Lisk’s hometown as Ricky is allowed to take the reins and lead the Chiefs to glory. No better year than an Olympic year. USA! USA! USA!

Seconded. Pretty decent stuff.

Also, Jim Furyk doing work at the Bridgestone (-7 through 17).

I wouldn’t hold my breath on Hillis being useful for KC.

SC, those were great

Huffster will have a post on it tomorrow, Deadspin is down for him so he can’t research at the moment.

I’m cautiously optimistic about the Chiefs. Even if Romeo is average as a coach, he will be an upgrade over Todd Haley. Bowe needs to get into camp. The defense should be decent, and if Poe can at least occupy blockers, he’ll be an upgrade over Tyson Jackson and Glenn Dorsey. Linebackers should be solid and secondary will be OK if Berry’s knee holds up. I’ll never be sold on Matt Cassell, but this will be a running/tight end team which should cover up his BB gun arm.

Breaking news, the Chiefs have just disbanded.

Broncos 9-7
Chargers 8-8
Chiefs 8-8
Raiders 6-10

The Madden cover got him…
August 2nd, 2012 at 5:31 PM
Is Cliff Lee on waivers Duckworth’d?
I know theres no chance anyone will claim him with that contract, but then he is free to be traded anywhere correct?
August 2nd, 2012 at 5:35 PM
If nobody claims him, he stays with the team. He would only be free to be traded anywhere if he was DFA’d and passed through the waivers there.

Broncos 9-7
Chargers 9-7
Raiders 8-8
Chiefs 6-10
No love for Meachem or Goodson as new faces? With all the run M. Bush got, Goodson should play a big role for the Raiders when DMac goes down.
August 2nd, 2012 at 5:37 PM
Yes, if he clears waivers he can be traded.
August 2nd, 2012 at 5:41 PM
Al-Farouq Aminu absolutely DOMINATING the US team right now. Four points from the floor. Unstoppable. Story of the summer.

I should have slipped Meachem in there. I had him down as a possibility.

Poe is playing the position occupied by 63-year old Kelly Gregg last season. Jackson and Dorsey will be starting along side him.

I secretly want the Broncos to go 12-4 to shove it in the face of the Tebow worshipers.
August 2nd, 2012 at 6:00 PM
Rumor I heard was that they were going to start by using him in pass rush situations.
August 2nd, 2012 at 6:13 PM
I’m looking forward to that KC defense. Lots of young talent, but like the Thunder in the NBA… better put it together before you can’t afford it all. That window could close quickly.
August 2nd, 2012 at 6:20 PM
Just seems strange to me, how the Phillies had to outbid everyone for him, or he took less money to be there, but now no one would want that contract for free? The Yankees were begging for that contract two years ago.
August 2nd, 2012 at 6:24 PM
WWoS, you see Lavarnway is starting tonight behind the plate?
August 2nd, 2012 at 6:30 PM
Aren’t Jarrett Johnson’s pass-rushing skills essentially nonexistent?
August 2nd, 2012 at 6:30 PM
Yeah… I’m not actually very high on Lavarnway. I see him basically as Kelly Shoppach, or Salty with a little less power. I hope I’m wrong and he can hit more consistently, but his stats the past two years are really padded by a single great month.
August 2nd, 2012 at 6:34 PM
that’s what i was thinking…his best attribute was “lining up on the other side of terrell suggs.”
August 2nd, 2012 at 6:36 PM

Dude, we get it: you hate the Saints now for some reason after apparently supporting them for more than 40 years and going through all the shitty years.
August 2nd, 2012 at 6:37 PM

Secretly? Shit, I’m rooting for this quite loudly and proudly. I respect the hell out of Peyton Manning and want to see him do well. And I still want my boy Tracy Porter to have continued success.
August 2nd, 2012 at 6:40 PM
Those expecting great things from Meachem will be sorely disappointed. He’ll show a flash every now and then, but there’s a reason the pass-happy Saints let him walk.
August 2nd, 2012 at 6:43 PM
Bountygate — and the response to it — was the last straw. I backed them for four-plus decades no matter how crappy they were, but the arrogance and condescension the organization displays today was not part of that history.
August 2nd, 2012 at 8:58 PM
I guess A.J. Smith is tired of addressing this every year. Norval has to win it all AND cure cancer AND make the Van Halen reunion stronger.
Turner is done at season’s end. Mark tape: my name, present time.
