Eight Female Badminton Players Disqualified From Olympics For Trying to Throw Matches
Four women’s badminton doubles teams have been disqualified from the London Olympics. The teams involved were world doubles champions Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang of China, South Korea’s Jung Kyun-eun and Kim Ha-na, South Korea’s Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min-jung and Indonesia’s Meiliana Jauhari and Greysia Polii. The four teams were accused of throwing matches in order to gain favorable seeding. From the National Post:
The Badminton World Federation said in a statement it had charged the doubles players from China, South Korea and Indonesia under its players’ code of conduct with “not using one’s best efforts to win a match” and “conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport.”
Xiaoli/Yang and Kyun-eun/Ha-na played a match that saw the crowd boo them over losing points deliberately. Then Jung-eun/Min-jung and Jauhari/Polii took the court only to be warned by officials for the same thing. While this is shocking, there is good news – this is the first time that an athlete has gotten into trouble or been sent home from the 2012 Olympics and it had nothing to do with Twitter! Progress!

Say it ain’t so, Ha…say it ain’t so
Found myself a little relieved that this was because of the draw thing and not because organized crime and gambling has gotten its claws around the most beautiful game

Just London? That doesn’t seem harsh enough. They should be banned from future Olympics too. This is worse than doping. I feel bad for the people who paid to watch this crap.

Badminton is forever tarnished. How will we ever love badminton again?

Please don’t give Roger Goodell any ideas on how to spruce up Week 17

China did the same thing in Beijing. One of their teams (or maybe individuals) threw a match so a teammate with a better shot at medaling could advance.

China’s Olympic delegation has launched an investigation into the allegations, state media said.
“The Chinese Olympic Committee… opposes any kind of behaviour to violate the sporting spirit and morality,” Xinhua news agency quoted a Chinese Olympic spokesman as saying.
From one of the link. Good for them. At least they’ve taken the initial steps to investigate the matter, rather than cry racism when people dare question their athletes. Like with that 16 year old swimmer.

This was the worst deliberate throw of a match since Sensei told Bobby to sweep the leg.

I was shocked that this wasn’t an Italian scandal but I suppose Italian women have a little to much bolognese in the trunk for badminton.

hahaha they just showed some of the highlights from these matches. these players were literally hitting directly into the net or whiffing on swings and then play-acting like they were upset. you’d think they’d be good enough to place their shots so they “just” went out-of-bounds.

Ray Allen took time off the men’s hoops team to watch some badminton. When he came in, the announcer alerted everybody that “Jesus Shuttlecock” was there.

Hmmm. When they do this in the NBA, they’re rewarded with lottery picks.

Losing a match to gain favorable seeding? Maybe that’s an issue that should be reviewed.
