Ye Shiwen, 16-Year-old Swimming Gold Medalist, is Embroiled in a Doping Controversy
Ye Shiwen, a 16-year-old female swimmer, captured Gold in the 400 m individual medley over the weekend, setting a world-record in the process. Congrats! Now that her record has set it and been scrutinized a bit … here come the doping allegations:
It was her final 100m of freestyle, in which she recorded a split time of 58.68sec, that aroused Leonard’s suspicion. Over the last 50m she was quicker than the American Ryan Lochte, who won the men’s 400m individual medley in the second-fastest time in history.
Doping at the Olympics? No way! John Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, has been the most vocal about Shiwen’s shady performance. His best quote so far:
“Any time someone has looked like superwoman in the history of our sport they have later been found guilty of doping.”
Leonard also pointed out to the Guardian that “five junior Chinese swimmers were banned after testing positive for the anabolic agent clenbuterol” in 2009.
It’ll be interesting to hear Leonard’s reaction to the World Doping Agency just announcing Shiwen has passed all her tests. [Guardian]

What? Can’t 16 year old girls outswim Ryan Lochte?
Jeez girl, try to make it look a little closer next time.

Lochte sucks, so a girl swimming faster than him doesn’t surprise me in the least bit.

Not much of a controversy then.

Those two aren’t exclusive. It sometimes takes time. Lance, Barry, Marion Jones and hundreds of others passed initial tests only to be found dopers later.

“Any time someone has looked like superwoman in the history of our sport they have later been found guilty of doping.”
Oh, well, if she looked like superwoman there should be an automatic five year ban.
/because Superwoman doesn’t exist, and I fear John Leonard’s attempts to remove the sexist overtones of Supergirl’s name.

John Leonard’s apology:
“So the Chinese super teen with the impossible time was clear of all the drugs we presently know about, Ye enjoy your new penis”

TBL: “Good morning Mr. Leonard. I was hoping to get your opinion on the clean test results for Ye Shiwen.”
Leonard: “Who is this? How’d you get this number??”
TBL: “Thats not important. What’s important is since she is clean, then she is obviously a HE. With that being said, I was hoping you could provide some dong pics.”
Leonard: “You need to contact Dong’s camp to get pics of him. Good day, sir”
TBL: “Wait, that’s not what I mea..”

When they said “This is the Social Media Olympics”, what I guess they meant is this is the Olympics that will make you hate both Social Media and the Olympics.
July 31st, 2012 at 10:53 AM
It’s not like China would have teams of doctors and scientists working around the clock to come up with ways to beat drug tests. They certainly don’t care about the Olympics that much, right?

Definitely suspicious. But then again, I’m always suspicious of anyone not from Europe, North America, and Australia winning gold medals.

mullet – i have been wondering the same thing. been meaning to talk golf equip and wrist injuries with him.

Perhaps I’m too jaded, but clean drug tests don’t always equal a clean athlete. The important questions are: how much did Shiwen outperform her previous bests, how was she trending heading to the olympics, and does she have a prominent adam’s apple?
July 31st, 2012 at 10:56 AM
In that case, let’s hope he keeps on hiding.

I was wondering the same thing. Did he go back to being a drug mule for the Zetas?

The Chinese are now accusing Phelps of doping. Their reasoning… is it natural for someone to set seven world records during one Olympics?
I enjoy the Winter Olympics much more than this shit.

In China they treat their athletes kindly and with their bests interests at heart.

The Ye Shiwen medal controversy has left me shaken and disturbed, and all the questions keep coming up over and over again, like bubbles in a case of club soda. Who was this new swimmer And why was she setting crazy records? And how? Did the Chinese coaches lie to us? I didn’t have any proof, but somehow, I didn’t entirely trust them either. Why was the ‘I Luv You’ not listed in Ludwig’s records? And if it was, did he know about it? And if he didn’t, who did? And where the hell was I?

Big big story, but more importantly – what’s going on with Ryen Russillo at ESPN?

Trivial compared to Erin Andrews new role at Fox.

That right there is a female swimmer. Now let’s talk about female swimmers. Can we talk about female swimmers, please? I’ve been dying to talk about the female swimmers with you all day, OK? “Ye Shiwen,” this name keeps coming up over and over again. Ye Shiwen! Ye Shiwen! I look on the webs, and everyone is talking about Ye Shiwen! So I say to myself, “I gotta find see this chick! I gotta go home and watch this chick get in the goddamn water!” So I go home and turn on the TV and what do I find out TBL? What do I find out?! Ye Shiwen is involved ina doping controversy. The chick may or may not be doping, okay? So I decide, “Oh shit, buddy, I gotta dig a little deeper.” Ye Shiwen is faster than that suck-ass Lochte? You gotta be kidding me! She’s gotta be doping! Everyone’s talkin about Ye Shiwen! All right. So I start marchin’ my way down to my buddy Brians office and I knock on his door and I say, “Brian! Brian! I gotta talk to you about Ye Shiwen.” And when I open the door what do I find? There’s not a single goddamn desk in that office! There…is…no…Brian. Guys, half the employees in this building have been made up. This office is a goddamn ghost town. AND WHAT ABOUT YE SHIWEN? AND WHAT ABOUT DONG DONG?
