USA Women’s Gymnastics Team Gold Medal is First in the Olympics Since 1996
Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross – the Fab 5 – just became the first USA women’s gymnastics team to win a gold medal since 1996. USA easily captured the gold, with Russia taking the silver. According to tweets – NBC is tape-delaying the event, and as luck would have it, the online feed froze, so fans couldn’t watch it in real time – Douglas had the high score on the floor exercise, and Raisman solidified the victory with a strong floor performance.
The last USA team to capture the gold was known as the Magnificent 7 – Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, Dominique Dawes, Kerri Strug, Amy Chow, Amanda Borden and Jaycie Phelps.

Spoiler? Spoiler.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:48 PM
It would be nice to tuck the result after the jump…Yahoo is doing it.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:48 PM
I have to wonder if you put the results in the headline just to support your anti-tape delay position.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:48 PM
My fault for being on the internet.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:50 PM
I watched it live, bunch of crying emotionally battered anorexics on their way home to being tortured in their fascist countries for failing. Compelling television.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:52 PM
I have to wonder if you put the results in the headline just to support your anti-tape delay position.
It is a sporting event. If NBC wants to show it delayed, that is their decision. I find it funny that people want a spoiler on a notable news story that happened.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Team America, fuck yeah!
July 31st, 2012 at 1:53 PM
I’d say the spoiler thing goes out the window once NBC spoiled Franklin’s gold last night right before it happened.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Immediately put a halt to this besmirchment of two classics.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:54 PM
I’ll be watching Missy Franklin and Michael Phelps in an hour also. We will post what happens, probably.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:55 PM
Her vaults the other night were incredible. It was scary how high she could get over the vault.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:55 PM
Rosebud is a sled.
Dil is a guy.
Gus Fring got defaced.
Walt is planning to take out Mike and once again has no idea the shitstorm he’s getting himself into.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:55 PM
When’s the individual all-around stuff?
July 31st, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Shoutout to the hometown kid. Really pissed she didn’t qualify for the All-Around, I thought she was underscored a little.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:57 PM
This is not appropriate. These girls actually won something.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:58 PM
When I was 7, I was sure I would marry her one day.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:58 PM
From the ESPN.com main page, how fucking dare they
July 31st, 2012 at 1:59 PM
No kiddin. That title should go towards the men’s team. That was fucking embarrassing.

The fallacy of this argument is the assumption you are making that either a) people want to be spoiled or b)since you are news site you may risk the chance of getting your viewers to click your link if you DONT put the results in the lead-in.
Both of these assumptions are ridiculous and indefensible. It really isnt’ too much to be vague about the results in the lead and you know it. Trying to convince us that we are out-of-touch for making said request is laughable. Almost as laughable as the “coincidence” that NBC’s streaming coverage went out. Might as well be Enron telling some power stations to go down for a few hours.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:02 PM
Now that everyone knows the U.S. won the gold, everyone will tune in to witness the glory.
Had the U.S. choked and someone broke their face, everyone would have tuned in to witness the train wreck.
It’s a win-win for NBC.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:03 PM
So did the USA team have the best makeup?
July 31st, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Maroney has been fantastic on the vault, but that was her only event the whole Olympics, I think… do you need more contribution from everyone to be a “Fab Five” or just five people and wait for some to coin some unoriginal alliterative moniker.
She finished behind her teammates in qualifying, and she finished lowest on her team in all three of her events today. I shrug at all the outrage over it. The other girls did great.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:03 PM
That one girl looks like a Whoville character.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:05 PM
It’s not the posting the spoilers that bothers these people… it’s when you climb on their computers and re-direct their browsers to your breaking sports stories on a sports websites.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:06 PM
LEO IS A PATIENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 31st, 2012 at 2:06 PM
Lisk – Just do what NBC does… make people shut their eyes 5 seconds ahead of time and then just flash the story on the webpage about who won.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Clearly. Just dont use your eyes all day and you big whiner.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:09 PM
No site that I’ve seen is hiding the news (Yahoo’s main page is but not their main sports page), don’t frequent sports sites if you don’t want to know sports results
July 31st, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Is Phelps for sure swimming both the 200 Fly and 4×200 Free finals? Or is there a chance he doesn’t swim the relay final (I guess he’d only get a medal if he swam a prelim round, so that may factor in).
July 31st, 2012 at 2:12 PM
The gun was set to “whore” for most of the girls.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:14 PM
BBC feed was perfect. No idea why anyone would resort to the NBC feed given the problems, that’s on you, people.
And to quote myself on how dominant this performance was
July 31st, 2012 at 2:15 PM
don’t frequent sports sites if you don’t want to know sports results
Yeah, while I would like to try to not know the results, I don’t know how I’d get through the day without sports sites/twitter. And I still watch at night anyways (because it always turns into even though I know the results I still want to see how it happened) so I guess NBC is the big winner.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:17 PM
I watched on the NBC Olympics iPhone app. It was live and the quality was great.
/team McKayla Maroney
July 31st, 2012 at 2:18 PM
+1 timeout
July 31st, 2012 at 2:18 PM
I’m on the anti-NBC side here, but it seems really obviously gratuitous to have the big words at the top of the page explicitly state what happened. I guess when EIC has the most transparent and belabored agendas on earth, I’m not as likely to give the benefit of the doubt that it wasn’t intentional.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:19 PM
holy crap, Rowing is the worst sport in the Olympics.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:20 PM
What about the overall score? Russia really helped them out late.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:22 PM
I don’t know – I turned it on this morning and all they had was horse jumping. That needs scratched from the Olympics ASAP. Can’t believe they have that crap and not baseball, softball, etc.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Eh. You’re probably right and it’s probably why I don’t care about the Olympics anymore.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Hey, the Romneys of the world need something to watch, too.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:30 PM
NBC should have placed the gymnastics in the middle of a Mad Men or one of those other dumb ass show. Then, we’d have a spoiler alert.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:32 PM
witness the glory hole
/jerrah’d
July 31st, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Dude, this is happening everywhere…the agenda here is to report sports news as it happens so go troll ESPN.com, SI.com, et all
Mad Men plots aren’t sports news, this didn’t work
July 31st, 2012 at 2:34 PM
why do all lady gymnast have five heads?
July 31st, 2012 at 2:35 PM
Mad Men plots aren’t sports news, this didn’t work
To be fair, most of what he suggests does not work.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:37 PM
the Duff-mans head would have exploded if that had happened.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Huh? I am referring to the overall score.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:40 PM
Obama likes horses too!
July 31st, 2012 at 2:42 PM
Neither are GoT episodes, yet both get their own posts on TBL, while Breaking Bad is ignored like a redheaded assistant coach.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:43 PM
Aren’t you a sports journalist? That’s an awfully bullshit attitude to have.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:44 PM
I believe that’s how Obamacare got bulldozed through Congess.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:44 PM
Edward Norton was pretending to be Aaron, “Roy” was real.
Primal Fear’d
July 31st, 2012 at 2:44 PM
Everyone knows its sports news and everyone also knows its being shown on tape delay. Neither TBL or any other media outlet would have violated some journalistic code by placing some kind of spoiler alert for the gymnastics results for people who may be on a sports site looking for some other sports news. It doesn’t bother me, because I found out the information earlier, but the idea that there was no other way around them being able to present the results is weak.

July 31st, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Wait I’m thinking of someone else sorry.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:47 PM
son, don’t have me take out the verbal backhand for you yet again.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:48 PM
If you don’t want a sporting events result, stay the fuck off sports sites. End of.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:49 PM
No worries.
July 31st, 2012 at 2:55 PM
There’s a hint for you.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:00 PM
I don’t go to sports sites. I come here.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:08 PM
This doesn’t seem like much of a spoiler. The most important aspect of the event is whether there was a coaching challenge of scoring where the team has to break out some cash money like the Japanese team did last night. And, I haven’t learned that here.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Nada i dont know who mole was thinking of but for the record i havent veen paid to write a sports story since 2007. I just like sharing glory days links
July 31st, 2012 at 3:17 PM
Missed opportunity for a “glory hole links” capper there
