Michael Phelps Misses the Touch, Finishes 2nd in the 200 Meter Butterfly
Michael Phelps was going for his third Olympic gold medal in the 200 meter Butterfly, one of his best events. He led the entire race, but as he stretched for the wall with a slight lead over South African Chad Le Clos, he didn’t reach, and Le Clos out touched him by .05 seconds.
Phelps still earned his 18th swimming medal all-time in the Olympic Games, tied for the record, but none are probably as bittersweet as losing out on history in trying to become the first man to win an event in three straight Games.

shit final stroke, though he did die on the last leg just a bit. he’s gonna be much more pissed about this race than the 400IM
July 31st, 2012 at 3:07 PM
but none are probably as
bittersweetbustumental as losing out on historyJust because I like it when things and people are busts
July 31st, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Can all you dumb assholes complaining about NBC just go here and shut the fuck up.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Not just the event, ANY event. Never happened before.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Writing headlines for men’s swimming is the easiest thing ever: “__________ Chokes” Just fill in Lochte/Phelps depending on the day.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:10 PM
It’s worth mentioning that he won this race by 1/100th of a second four years ago. He should have won this, yes, but he probably should have lost four years ago. It happens.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:10 PM
How many more events is Phelps scheduled to swim?
July 31st, 2012 at 3:11 PM
that was the 100 fly.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:13 PM
I’ve missed “The Touch” ever since I lost my copy of Transformers: The Movie.
/not the Michael Bay one, kids

It’s worth mentioning that I am an idiot
July 31st, 2012 at 3:18 PM
4 I believe
4×200 relay today
100m butterfly
200IM
Medley relay
US should easily win both relays. Lochte will beat Phelps in the 200IM and I think Phelps will pull out the 100 since right now his endurance is what’s hurting him so the shorter race should help.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:19 PM
needless to say, the idea still rings true. he came back in that event, and took a half stroke to win while the other guy coasted. this time, he coasted and it bit him in the ass.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:21 PM
he should, but Lochte has been for shit. That 400 gold wasn’t a great race. Phelps has to take his fly out faster.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Oh so now we are mad when a US Swimmer doesn’t touch.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:24 PM
I just find it utterly astounding that anyone with a choice would watch pool swimmin’ and girls’ tumbling rather than Phils (Lee) vs. Nats (Strasburg) tonight.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:25 PM
It was 0.05 seconds, not 0.5 seconds (an eternity, in swimming).
July 31st, 2012 at 3:26 PM

Uh yeah. Strasburg pitching against Philly farm team isn’t exactly exciting right now. This is the Olympics!
July 31st, 2012 at 3:26 PM
t was 0.05 seconds, not 0.5 seconds (an eternity, in swimming).
yes. .5 seconds is an eternity in lots of sports.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:28 PM
Yup sign me up for guys standing around waiting to throw a ball for 25 seconds.
/snooze

Al Orter won the discus 4 straight Olympics. Did they mean swimming?
July 31st, 2012 at 3:29 PM

Rod Tidwell wants you to show him the bail money.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:31 PM
I think they mean real sports that aren’t just playing Frisbee.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:31 PM
Oh. The announcers kept saying nobody had ever done it in the Olympics, fuckers lied.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:31 PM
For one of Phelps’ golds in the last Olympcs (a relay), the Australian touched the pad first, but Phelps touched it harder, thus activating the timer first, to get the win by like .01. So, he’s caught some fortune on these close calls and lost a tough one today.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Carl Lewis, won the long jump 4 straight times too. These people are retards. I know of some rowers who’ve golded a few times in a row.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Sloppy, sloppy writing.

Rod Tidwell wants you to show him the bail money.
I still can’t believe that he has an Oscar to his name.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:34 PM
We’re also mad when the swim coach DOES touch.

July 31st, 2012 at 3:34 PM
I was thinking of him too when they said that. Kept seeing it in print too. Guess they were referring to just swimming, but sure as shit weren’t indicating that.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Frank Defords retrospective on Al Oerter was an amazing piece, fwiw.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:35 PM
Man… whoever took the mug shots for Olympics website did these female swimmers no favors.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:35 PM
They showed a Frisbee football highlight on SportsCenter at noon today. Really. It was like being back in 1979 or something.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:36 PM
It’s happened before. But not in swimming. Kitajima is going for the triple in the 200m breastroke tomorrow night.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:37 PM
The Oscars after Boat Trip came out, he should have been dragged up on stage and made to give it back.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:37 PM
HEY DOES ANYONE KNOW IF IT’S HAPPENED BEFORE?
July 31st, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Except for the two women who’ve done it, it’s never been done.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:40 PM
There are Olympians who’ve won 6 straight golds in lesser-known team event: kayaking, fencing, etc.
Add to Oerter and Lewis in four straight individual golds: Per Elstrom in sailing.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Strasburg pitching against Philly farm team isn’t exactly exciting right now.
An 81 pitch, 27 strikeout perfect game sounds pretty exciting to me
July 31st, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Or besides the men who’ve done it on team relays, it’s never been done.
REACHING FOR WAYS TO VALIDATE.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:41 PM
Sorry, Paul Elstrom.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:41 PM
If Ryan Howard is playing, I’m going to give Strasburg a bump on those stats.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:41 PM
Yeah this is seeming less and less impressive, only one way to qualify the statement further in accuracy and yet everyone in the media expanded it instead. Assholes.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Jets: Hey Wayne? We were just kidding.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:43 PM
You must have missed it when the Dear Leader did that in the North Korean League.
Right after shooting 38 under par with six aces.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:45 PM
The Pittsburgh Pirates will likely finish over .500 this year. THEY’VE NEVER DONE IT BEFORE.

According to NBC Sports, Ryan and the Jets have won three straight Super Bowls, something no one has ever done before.
Oops, I mean according to Ryan and the Jets.
And TBL.

Yeah that’s an all-time race of any Olympics.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:51 PM
This lady outside my work bay is telling this guy that a Hawaii vacation is not that good. As her sister went out there, and there was nothing to do, except go bowling. I am not making this up.
July 31st, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Oh look, Ye blew out another world record. Hmmm!
July 31st, 2012 at 3:57 PM
No she didn’t, she broke the Olympic Record, wasn’t close to the WR.
July 31st, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Do the guys who got the USA into the final but aren’t racing in the final of the relay get a medal too?
July 31st, 2012 at 4:01 PM
That opening split for Lochte would have won him a silver alone in the 200 free.
July 31st, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Unless they changed something I think so…didn’t Phelps get a gold in 2008 since he was just part of a relay heat but skipped the final?
July 31st, 2012 at 4:03 PM
The Dude abides.
July 31st, 2012 at 4:07 PM
Absolutely. Yes.
July 31st, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Word thanks.
Impressive way to set the record. Sweet jesus that wasn’t even close.
July 31st, 2012 at 4:09 PM
They got old Carl Lewis another gold that way I think.
July 31st, 2012 at 4:15 PM
The US can’t be touched in long distance freestyle relays. They are just too fucking good.
July 31st, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Its these kind of posts where I miss 10-Post-Mole and his glitch in the matrix.
July 31st, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Ah, the good ol’ days with USA Swimming and its pedo coaches.
