Drew Brees is the Best Because He Does Things Like This
Drew Brees is probably the coolest QB in the NFL – sorry Tebow and Sanchez – and I admit that I’ve been a big fan since this cool interview he did with 60 Minutes. He just seems like a good dude.
And then you hear stories like this …
Marques Clark thought his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity came last summer. After six years away from football and getting laid off from a couple of jobs, the former Henderson State receiver landed a job as the receivers coach at Westview High School in his hometown of San Diego.
Westview just happened to be the place where some NFL players such as New Orleans Saints quarterbacks Drew Brees, Chase Daniel and Sean Canfield spent their summers doing passing drills.
And sure enough, Brees saw Clark coaching players and asked if he wanted to run some routes …
After Clark spent the past two summers joining the NFL and college players two or three times a week in those practice sessions, Brees was so impressed that he suggested the Saints give the 28-year-old Clark a tryout. The Saints, of course, took Brees’ recommendation seriously — especially since it’s not something he does often– and brought Clark in for a look earlier this week. And they liked what they saw enough to sign him to the 90-man roster for training camp.
… and you think to yourself … Brees is one of the few athletes who could make a suitable role model. [NOLA.com via Cajun Boy]

He is an awesome dude becauSe he did something that could directly benefit himself in the near future? He isn’t blind, the Saints don’t exactly have an abundance of weapons.

I’m printing this story out, highlighting this portion of it, laminating it, getting it framed, and hanging it on my wall.
He isn’t blind, the Saints don’t exactly have an abundance of weapons.
Yeah….no abundance of weapons at all…
Season – yards (TDs)

I kinda wish there was some sort of filter that could separate what athletes do that are just flat out generous from the stuff that’s done for publicity. Brandon Jacobs taking the Giants’ fan kid (who sent him all of his piggy back money in the mail to get him to stay with NY) to some BounceTown type kids place with his own son and Jon Cena having his own conference room with Make-A-Wish because he does so many of those requests are awesome to hear.

Lebatard had a respected filmmaker come on his show recently who emphatically called Drew Brees a liar and an attention whore who says one thing in front of the camera but does whatever’s in his best interest off it. I’ve always thought most of Brees’ bullshit was grandstanding. I’m sure he’s pals with Lance Armstrong too. They’re the same dude.
July 30th, 2012 at 8:53 PM
It actually was quite an interesting interview, as it also delved into the bounty scandal, player safety, etc. Made Brees look pretty terrible. I’d recommend a listen. It’s a shame this comment has a 50/50 shot at seeing the light of day. Obviously comments about whether one would stick it in the butthole of some slovenian jumper add more to the site.

i think Butters mentioned it last week, but hearing Hawk Harrelson say “it’s all good” was startling and honestly worse than anything else he’s said after a positive Sox play. yikes!

July 30th, 2012 at 9:43 PM
Holy crap, Taguchi and ATL_Badger today, Nick P over the weekend. Are we witnessing a thaw in blogger-commenter relations?
July 30th, 2012 at 9:43 PM
From what we’ve read about Brees here and other places, he’s done some good & some self-serving stuff. Much like most of us.
A.P., I agree with your point about his contract dispute. He did appear to put his own desires over team. I dunno if that is particularly different from most starting QBs. Maybe he sees the end of his career coming quickly and wants that one, last good deal to tide him over.
Ya got that right. Me too, brotha. Me too.
July 30th, 2012 at 9:45 PM
anyone care to share the history on why these three were banned? nickP was before my time, the others just disappeared and were either asked to be freed (TST) or NOT to be freed (ATL_B)

Nick P was banned for linking to something called fourgirlsfingerpainting. Except that I’m not sure he was banned. I always thought him and Rusty were the same person, though. He’s from my lurker days, really.
Taguchi… I don’t quite know what happened. Something to do with sharing his login with Dirt one of the times Dirt was banned but then Dirt was un-banned but Taguchi was still banned pending a public apology that had already been made but was ignored. Does that make sense to you?
ATL_Badger just complained about the site a lot.
July 30th, 2012 at 9:55 PM
One day when there were server problems, ATL engager said, flat out, that the site was a piece of shit. Boom, went Jmac
July 30th, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Glad my similar comment didn’t post that one night when they redid the server. Which the next day brought about ‘the posting too fast’ issue and removed like 12 comments from the night we were first talking about chewing tobacco. although from what i know, the EIC doesn’t really check this late night shiat.

i don’t think people think that way, otherwise they would go elsewhere, right? i mean, i’m living at my in-laws so i am limited with internet, comp, etc and i can say i wake up, grab my phone, and check email, Twitter, TBL roundup, and Facebook in one fell swoop. there’s one thing in that mix that doesn’t necessarily fit, but i check it like it’s the morning paper. so bravo!

Jmac, i dont believe most regulars think the site aucks. We just like to bust balls and many of us truly do provide honest, constructive criticism. This place is full of intelligent, funny characters and is one of the best commenter groups I’ve encountered on various blogs and message boards
Aside from the technical snafu with commenting, it has been a good month. We had a few really productive TBLADs in July which is more than the past few months. It’s been fun with the infusion of new blood, even the dopes like ddmcd and the Stop the Bus guy, shortlived as their time here was.

AP summed it up pretty well. All of the morning regs like to give JMac a hard time when he earns it, but overall this site is one of the best out there. I think there is a lot of truth to the “Comes for the comments, reads the links later” sentiments. The TBL/TBLAD community is one of the most active, engaging, and well rounded group I have ever encountered.

Brees puts up gaudy stats but take a look at his weapons. Graham is outstanding, Sproles is good and then what? Colston is slow and injury prone but an okay reciever. Stack the Saints weapons against teams like the Pack or Pats, not even close…

calling it now. W-Sox win tonight in extras vs the Twins, they win the division. lose, they don’t. mark it down AP and no one else that is here (Walking U, Meth, SROD…where are you guys?!?!?!?)

July 30th, 2012 at 11:23 PM
Meth’s girl left him. it was a painful story. I’m worried less about SROD. He’s just…old.
July 30th, 2012 at 11:24 PM
Twins win.
Red Sox slap the Tigers around
Missy Franklin and her women’s size 13 feet win a gold medal
Yankees lose
Meth probably isn’t working tonight. He’s only on if he is at work
July 30th, 2012 at 11:25 PM
i would move him way outta that role. like 8th. when he gets lucky with a homer maybe someone is on base. other than that, he leaves 5+ on-base per game. dont ever care who goes in that spot.
July 30th, 2012 at 11:25 PM
I hope Michael Phelps loses everything. I can’t stand him
July 30th, 2012 at 11:27 PM
White Sox don’t really have another good lefty to put in the 3 spot. Ventura probably doesnt want to put three righties in a row with Youk, Konerko, and Rios

Bruce Levine and he’s with … of course … ESPN. ESPN Chicago to be exact.
Hack.
July 30th, 2012 at 11:39 PM
The lineup works with Dunn at #3…he hits home runs and gets on base, if you focus on the average you’re doing it wrong
July 30th, 2012 at 11:42 PM
can’t believe Levine is still working. but second, how could moving Dunn down in the order hurst, Butters? he’s a guaranteed 1-for-4 at best.
/more interested in your thoughts on “it’s all good”
July 30th, 2012 at 11:43 PM
I like getting Maholm – his stats look pretty good over the last several weeks – even w/o making any concessions for that tremendous suck of a team that surrounds him.
July 30th, 2012 at 11:45 PM
It hurts because you’d be putting a worse hitter in his spot unless it’s Rios I suppose but then you have Dunn and #5 and Pierzynski at #6 and I’m not sure you want to bunch the lefty hitters
And he’s better than 1-4 per night if you add walks into it, just because Gordon Beckham or whoever grounds out more doesn’t make him better because his average is higher

You’re a hoot. You really are.
Not even close against the Pats, you say? Well, except for that time two years ago when they whopped their ass so bad on national television that Bill Belichick waved the white flag early in the fourth quarter. Hoodie never does that.
Not even close against the Pack, you say?
Yeah, except for the first game of this last season, in which the Saints were down 8 and marched the length of the field, coming up just short of getting an overtime game.
But yeah…the Saints don’t belong on the field with any of these teams.
Again, you’re a hoot.

Heldover, I said nothing about Brees’ stats or the Saints not being a good team. I said they could use more weapons, that’s it. Their 3rd best option in the passing game is Devery Henderson, the Pats 3rd best is Lloyd or Hernandez and the Packs would be Finley… It really isn’t close. Thus going back to the article, it isn’t surprising that Brees would be looking for additional offensive threats no matter what the venue.
July 31st, 2012 at 1:49 AM

I don’t “know” Brees any more than I (or most other fans) know other athletes. It does seem like there are a few (Brees, Tebow, John Lynch) that seem to be quite willing and eager to be on camera, especially when they do something good, and others (Todd Helton, even Cutler) that would prefer to never see a camera even when they are being generous.
