Hope Solo Goes Off on Former Women’s Star and Current Commentator Brandi Chastain

Hope Solo apparently did not like something that Brandi Chastain, now a commentator on game coverage for NBC during the Olympics, said today. I watched the match, and am not sure what set Solo off. It was a chippy match– at one point, a Colombian defender intentionally punched Abby Wambach away from the ball, undetected by the official. The U.S. Women won 3-0 to advance to the quarterfinals, so it’s not like the performance was bad.

Here’s what Hope Solo had to say right after the match:

Cat Fight! And Solo just called Chastain old, so this should go over well.

[UPDATE: As a reader points out, the best guess is Solo is pissed about Brandi Chastain's comments about Solo's failed drug test as a result of PMS medicine last week. I would make a joke about needing to increase the dosage, but that would be insensitive and my wife might rip my face off. So, I won't do it. But if this was based on something before the match, Solo was letting this one stew for a while.]

Chastain’s greatest fame is ripping her shirt off to reveal not much of anything. It overinflated her ability to the general public. Hamm, Akers and Lilly and then it is a long way to go to find any other equals from that generation.

KC, I know you’re making a joke, but what the fuck does her husband have to do with anything? It seems to me as though she’s calling out an idiot announcer which we do around here all the time. Plenty of male athletes rip on announcers and booth folks. No one goes around saying that those athletes are going to go home and beat their wives (even though they often actually do!).

As for “Some Random Old Dude”, “Some Random Misogynist” is spot on. You hate women and have no wife. That seems appropriate. Good luck with that.

Ted, you are completely incorrect. As you have no doubt seen, many of us here wish no harm on anyone. It was an attempt at humor. No more, no less.

I don’t hate women. But as a victim of domestic violence (!) from a woman, I have little patience for displaced anger.

I treated both my wives with the utmost respect and honor. I was at my first wife’s bedside as she passed away in ’97, and I refrained from striking/retailation towards my second wife as she repeatedly showed her frustration through physical violence. I did not initiate such response, nor did I threaten/abuse her verbally, non-verbally, etc.

In neither marriage was I perfect, but I attempted to treat each of my wives (and every woman I encounter) in accordance with Biblical principles to the best of my abilities.

I don’t have a problem with you putting me in check. You should get to know me first, however. I am many things. Misogynist, I am not.

Not for the reason I took it off, though. Girlfriend called me Thursday from overseas at 11:45 in the morning and said that her co-workers were coming at 1 PM to get all her stuff because she was breaking up with me. After realizing she was serious and all that, I said I needed more notice than an hour, and called out of work to pack all her stuff. Worst part is my brother had taken a week off of work to go visit my dad, and decided it was too boring. 5 minutes before my girlfriend called he called and asked if he could come up and stay with me for a few days. He arrived to me packing her stuff and now for a few days I’ve got to put on that “man face” and pretend I’m not tore up about it. Can’t fucking eat, sleep. Shit sucks. She also asked for the dog.
