Randy Lerner is in Negotiations to Sell the Cleveland Browns
Randy Lerner, the owner of the Cleveland Browns, released a public statement this morning as rumors swirled that he had sold the team. ESPN 850 in Cleveland was the first to discuss it on air this morning.
Lerner’s statement:
“In connection with current rumors and press inquiries, I can report that I’ve been approached by Mr. Jimmy Haslam, who is interested in making an investment in the Cleveland Browns,” Lerner says. “We are currently in negotiations and both sides have agreed to keep that dialogue and its details private. Given that any transaction would require League approval, care has been taken so that this process will not be disruptive to the organization, in particular the football team, as it prepares for the upcoming season. We will share further details or make an announcement if it becomes necessary.”
Haslam is the current CEO of Pilot Flying J Travel Centers, which sells a delicious arrangement of smoked meat jerkies. He is the son of the founder of that company (who bears the same name). The statement said “investment”, but it’s hard to believe that investment is for anything other than a majority or full ownership of the team.
Randy Lerner, who also owns the Aston Villa Football Club in England, has been the owner since his father, Al, passed away in 2002. Over the last decade, the Browns have won only 35% of their games, and in my owner rankings, I had Lerner at #32 out of a possible 30. I’m sure Browns fans will welcome some change.

Sell it to the people!

Haslam’s brother is the Governor of Tennessee. God damnit I hate legacy families so much.
Bright side, this family is from Detroit, and Browns fans getting bought by a Michigan family would be fucking hilarious and hopefully several of the fans would kill themselves.

I had Lerner at #32 out of a possible 30.
I just don’t get this new math.

Mmmmm.

I don’t think they would care about the Michigan thing at all. Anything is better than Lerner.

What an asshole.
I’m sure the diehard OSU fans that live there will, they have nothing to live for other than talking shit about Michigan.

great news for Browns fans.

So is Lerner also going to sell Aston Villa? I’d be surprised if he sold the Browns and kept the Villains.
I’m guessing Haslam wants to move the team to Flint to give them even less hope.

YYYYYYYEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
Lerner’s been a shitty owner in a sea of shitty owners. Gilbert, Lerner and the less crappy Dolan haven’t allowed CLE fans to have much faith in the heads of their major teams.
NOOOOOOOOOO!!
Apparantly Lerner’s in talks with a minority owner of the Steelers. Hopefully bar rape and bad hygiene don’t become a part of the Browns DNA if its sold.

OH I’M SORRY DID OHIO STOP BEING THE STATE I THOUGHT IT WAS?

Meanwhile, in New Orleans, Tom Benson tries to wrap up a triumvirate of suck …

Gilbert? How is he a bad owner? He’s been everything but so far here in Cleveland
July 27th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Sounds about right. Rich guy gets bored with owning a small part of an NFL team, thinks it may be more exciting to own all of a minor league football team.

I’ll give you that Gilbert has been a lot less so than either Lerner or Dolan, but he’s embarrased himself with both the Lebron and Chris Paul trade stuff.

Embarrassing yourself doesn’t make you a bad owner…not spending money and hiring the wrong people does. Chris Grant has been pretty solid so far as GM, and he’s spent money

Dolan’s issues stemmed from the Decision. Before that, it seemed like he and the organization did everything short of fellatio to keep Bron happy and in Clev. When that failed, he went all Comic Sans on us.

Also a Michigan guy, and Cavs fans didn’t self-immolate when he bought out Gund.
July 27th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
As long as the new guy isn’t over-leveraged and keeps Heckert we should be fine. I’d prefer that he be a Billionaire vs. multi-millionaire. If he helps put a good product on a field that beats the Steelers, nobody will give a shit.

Also, Dan Gilbert is a very, very good owner locally, national perspective be damned. He updated the arena, built a world-class training facility, invested heavily in the city via multiple business angles. He inherited a team with Paul Silas, shitty GM Paxson, and built a good front office and has upgraded coaching hires.
