The Houston Astros Are a Horrific Train Wreck
The Houston Astros have spent the 2012 baseball season continuing to set new wonderful lows in Major League Baseball’s department of suck, specializing in severely comical ineptitude and a healthy side of endless embarrassment.
This inspiring Astros bunch has lost an astonishing 22 of its last 24 baseball games. They own a putrid record of 10-41 on the road. They sport a run differential of -114, sharing the triple-digit honor with only the Minnesota Twins, who currently sit at 100.
In a word? Disgrace. In another word? Hilarious.
Rebuilding is one thing, but throwing officially licensed Houston Astros apparel on the first nine people to walk into the stadium and referring to it as a starting lineup is quite another. If you’re not feeling too queasy, take a look at the Astros morbid depth chart. It’s more pathetic than the existence of fanny packs. Rosie O’Donnell crashing a line of strutting Victoria’s Secret models would be less offensive than this. Can they at least pretend to try?
Believe it or not, the longest tenured player on the current Houston roster is three-year mainstay Wesley freaking Wright, who has courageously managed to remain the happiest baseball player alive. Wright wears the honorable patch of seasoned, go-to veteran by default mostly because new owner Jim Crane has of course decided to stick to tradition and once again clean house this year; just like last year.
Remember when the Astros traded for Carlos Beltran in 2004? Or when they picked up Randy Johnson at the deadline in 1998 for a playoff run? That feels like 103 years ago. The only remotely intriguing storyline involving this clusterfuck of a franchise is just how easily they will bust through that all-too familiar 100-loss barrier. Beyond that enticing nugget, it’s truly a horrendously filthy time to be a fan of the Houston Astros.

To be fair, that’s always been the case.

Holy shit MATT DOWNS is their first basemen.
That is unequivocally hilarious. He’s a former Giants prospect who was too poor of a hitter for a second baseman to stick with the big league club pre-Freddy Sanchez.

Drayton McLane didn’t believe in rebuilding. So he he constantly traded away prospects in order to rent aging veterans, just so we’d have enough to stay competitive. If you look at how far we’ve fallen since 2005, you’ll see decreasing wins almost every year. It’s because McLane refused to blow up the team in the past, that it’s gotten so ugly now. What Crane and Luhnow are doing is the same as trying to flip a house that looks a little rough but reasonable on the outside, only to find out that the foundation has to be completely rebuilt once you get to work.
Every single player they’ve traded away was going to cost more in the long run than we were going to get in wins from them. You have to get this ugly in order to rebuild. This is the legacy of Drayton McLane and his Yes-men Tim Purpura and Ed Wade.

And unfortunately the only context I can provide to that depth chart is the fact that Jed Lowrie is on the DL. He has been by far our best hitter outside of Jose Altuve.
The Astros were consistently graded as having a top 3 farm system in the late 90s. Drayton then spent the next 10 years completely liquidating it. He also failed to sign roughly half of the team’s draft picks each year. Talent was shipped off or allowed to leave, and the pantry was not restocked. It’s ironic actually that the GM who stopped and changed the direction by bringing in prospects again was Ed Wade.
Anyway, it’s going to look ugly for awhile, but Luhnow is maximizing value on the players available and we signed all of our draft picks this year, including Lance McCullars. So long as they don’t change direction and start trading away prospects again, this process will pay dividends down the line in the AL West, just as the core of the Rangers is becoming middle aged.

And one last point that I’ll make: ALL teams in baseball go through cycles where rebuilding is necessary. Some are able to weather the rough parts and make them short because they drafted well and kept talent developing in the minors. Others attempt to buy their way out of the rough times. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. But this is going to be so ugly precisely because the team neglected to go through this process for so long.
Fin.
/lets out long steady fart.

Who didn’t see this coming? They were a trainwreck and McLane got out when the getting was good. Prospects and players were allowed to be traded with a vision for the short-term but zero long-range planning. The good news is that it can’t get worse than it is now. In 2-3 years, the Astros will be back.
Also, they aren’t that far removed from a good stretch of post-season play that most teams would love to have.
In Wright’s rookie year, the Cubs would not let him in parts of the stadium because they thought he was a bat boy.

Sometimes you have to hit solid rock bottom to hope for a successful future.
Better than being the team that is always just below .500 every single season and never sniffing the playoffs.
Long term pain is sometimes necessary to cleanup a long time mess, and the Stros are doing what they can to become relevant in 4 to 5 years.
July 26th, 2012 at 7:43 PM
The funny thing is you could have written a similar post about the Pirates in 2010.
July 26th, 2012 at 7:45 PM
Also whats worse?
Being a shitty team that was picked to be shitty and realizing those expectations, or being a team that was expected to contend and being shitty?
I would say the latter.
July 26th, 2012 at 7:47 PM
only gonna get worse when they join the AL.
July 26th, 2012 at 7:50 PM
I think the Stros are doing something the Twins should be doing, blowing it all up and rebuilding.
July 26th, 2012 at 8:08 PM
I would expect this from TBL, but not Hernia

I love the totally random “ATTENTION: THIS TEAM SUCKS” posts on here. Makes zero sense but that’s why its fun. I wish ESPN did this. “Tonight on SportsCenter: The Browns! They’re HORRIBLE! A retrospective, after this!”

The Browns! They’re HORRIBLE!
This from a Vikings fan.

only gonna get worse when they join the AL.
Pshaw, we’ll have one of those fancy Designated Hitters to use next year. Offensive numbers should skyrocket*.
*or not.
July 26th, 2012 at 8:22 PM
Hey, at least soon the M’s and the ‘Stros will be able to battle for the title of shitty baseball teams, head-to-head.
July 26th, 2012 at 8:23 PM
So losing 22 of 24 doesn’t deserve its own post? HA.
July 26th, 2012 at 8:25 PM
Spoken like a true Yankees fan, Tim.
July 26th, 2012 at 8:42 PM
If by “horrific train wreck” you mean solid management and intelligent baseball decisions, I think you’ve aptly described what’s happening in Houston.
I’m not an Astros fan, but I have to imagine that the majority of Houston fans are optimistic for the first time in a while.

This. Completely.
So many teams start this process, then panic halfway thru (see the Pirates & Royals for many years, or the Expos/Nationals until recently).
Stay the course, sign the right young guys, wait until they are really ready for the Show, then go compete.

This is almost as bad as a TBL joint. Baseball insiders agree that ss a result of the past 6 weeks the Astrid have remade their farm system into a top 10 in all of baseball. Laying any of this at cranes feet. Is ignorance
July 27th, 2012 at 12:22 AM
It was pretty rough being at the Dbacks-Stros game on Saturday. Kubel with the 3 homers and the coaching decisions are beyond baffling. Bases juiced and they let the starting pitcher take his at bat only to pull in the bottom of the inning.
July 27th, 2012 at 12:28 AM
They have dropped 22 of 24. You are criminally retarded. It’s been a sad, depressing decline, much like the crap comments being offered up on a regular basis.
July 27th, 2012 at 12:33 AM
@s1rweeze: So losing 22 of 24 should be ignored? Really? This is us picking on a team? Just stop talking. Take a walk. You’re much smarter than this.
July 27th, 2012 at 4:35 AM
It is what it is

I think this is awesome personally. I work late nights and need this comfort before bed. Thanks, Tim.

First they complain about no baseball posts, and then they complain when there is one. The Astros are moving into record-setting areas (see the July W/L record, the season road record, and the all-too-rare consecutive 106+ loss seasons) and I think that deserved mention.
July 27th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
I think this approach makes a lot more sense than overpaying for mediocre veterans and trying unsuccessfully to reach .500 every year. At least this could possibly pay off.
