Yes, but that’s several blocks north of us on the other side of The Village. So we’re safely insulated from that. But like I said, there’s about to be a lot of construction right across the street from us starting this fall. So we’ll have to deal with that for a year or so.

I live at Lovers and Greenville. My commute in the morning is less than 10 minutes by car and I don’t have to get on a single freeway.

I noticed this with Brooklyn vs. Manhattan as well – you don’t really end up paying too much less (if at all) you just get more space. And often less amenities and a shitty landlord to boot.

I’m moving to Dallas in two weeks with my fiance. We’re both lawyers, both will be working downtown (at least for the foreseeable future). Gonna live in an apartment near the AAC for a year, but will soon be house hunting. I would love to be near the Park Cities, as you are. Just wondering, if you don’t mind giving out numbers, what’s a “reasonable” mortgage like there?

It will vary a bit. We are on the east side of 75, just south of Lovers Lane (right by Central Market). Newer condos around here start at $1,200/month and some are higher. We live in an older building (it was built in the 70s) so place is not quite as expensive as some of the newer ones. In this part of town, you’ll see a mixture of older condos and newer ones, so if you want to find a good value for the location, you certainly can.

Our combined mortgage/HOA is about $1,000/month. Our condo is on the second floor, has two covered parking spaces, and is about 1,300 sq. st. Our property value has gone up though since the initial purchase (my wife purchased the condo in 2006 before we even met), but it’s still relatively stagnant right now because there is a huge vacant lot across the street from us, in which development is supposed to start this fall. After the development is complete, I expect our property value–but also our taxes–to go up quite a bit. But that will make reselling this place an awfully pleasant experience, so we’re happy about it.

A friend of ours bought a condo three years ago about one block south of us. It was in a former apartment complex which had been converted to condos and given all new fixtures, floorplans, etc. He paid $120,000 which is quite a bit more than my wife paid for our place in 2006. I have two other friends who live in a house on the other side of Skillman. The house is not that much bigger in terms of sq. ft. than our condo and the neighborhood is older (1950s-60s construction). But the location is great and they paid I think around $280,000 or so (can’t recall the exact amount, but their mortgage is $2,500/month).

I live Uptown because I can walk to work from my apartment. The higher prices are the trade-off for not wasting two hours a day sitting in traffic.

The Gables- or Marquis-type places Uptown start out about $1,200-plus for an effiency. Two BRs going for well over $2,000. I pay less, but I’m living small.

Cost of living in D.C. is out of control. My friend pays $900 a month for rent in a four-person townhouse at the edge of the Northwest-Northeast divide.

I don’t think this seems unreasonable, but that’s probably because I pay $2000 / month for a 1BR in Dupont Circle.

Re: Hipsters, Austin seems to have a higher concentration of them, but they don’t seem to have the hipster obnoxiousness nearly as much as those in Brooklyn or SF. I would rate the hipster experience in NYC as MUCH worse than Austin, and slightly worse than SF.

SF’s annoyance is definitely coming more from collar-popping bros than anything else. City wasn’t like that when I was growing up, and now it’s almost insufferable. DC has that similar feel to it as well – very “Lax-ish.”
