Dwight Howard: Trade Me to the Nets or Lakers, or I’ll Sign with Dallas in 2013
Dwight Howard still hates Orlando. And he still doesn’t want to be traded just anywhere (stop me if you’ve heard this before). The only teams the mercurial center will sign an extension with are the Lakers (that’s Shaq you hear snickering) and Nets (Brook Lopez, put down the comic book and pay attention).
If the Magic aren’t able to trade him either place, sources tell Woj that Howard will sign with … DALLAS (!) in 2013.
The Mavericks? The gutted Mavericks who will be lottery-bad in 2012-2013? Perplexing. I almost wonder if this is Howard’s bluff. “Everybody stay away, I’m calling the shots, and if you don’t trade me, next July I’m going to the rich owner who is just 13 months removed from winning a title.” Woj writes that Howard is so adamant about Dallas, he’s warned Houston they’re going to get burned if it trades for him:
Despite the Houston Rockets’ determination to trade for Howard and convince him to stay long term, Howard’s camp has repeatedly warned Houston owner Les Alexander and GM Daryl Morey that they will lose Howard to rival Dallas in free agency next July, sources said.
As we previously examined, even with the cap space Dallas has, why would Howard want to join old man Nowitzki? Is Howard that confident the Mavericks could quickly build another title contender? (Who knows, maybe he’s talked it over with Chris Paul and both will join Dirk in Dallas. Then again, we heard similar scuttlebutt about Deron Williams earlier this year. That never happened.)
Maybe Howard has this all figured out, and once his master plan is executed, everyone will be like, “oh, wow, nice move, D12.”
I guess I’m just the type of guy who would rather go to a team with a nice mix of youth and veterans (see Atlanta and Houston, which have the youth, and could acquire the veterans) to try and build something that lasts for 4-5 years, rather than chasing a ring in the next 1-2 years.

Mavericks fans to Dwight:
No thanks, we already had our mopey bitch episode with Lamar.

Thank god, I was wondering what was happening to D-Wigit.

I’m starting to really freaking hate this. it’s code for “some guy floated a rumor to” and nothing more.
July 26th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Hennigan should try to trade for a star and make one last run at a title. Play Dwight 45+ minutes a game like a rented mule, then let him walk. Fuck him.

Dirk is still much better than anything the Hawks or Rockets have. Those two would be a deadly combo for a couple of years.
July 26th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
I’m hoping that HOU does trade for him and then he does go to DAL.
July 26th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
maybe you are, but nobody wants you to run game for them with your weak gear.
July 26th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Pretty sure that the ORL newspaper would be justified to use “Howard Tries Another Bitch Move” in a headline.

Miz, you can hate that, while I hate on this:
The Mavericks? The gutted Mavericks who will be lottery-bad in 2012-2013?
I’ll give this for J-Mac: he sticks to his guns.
Why would he sign with Dallas? Cause Cuban’s rich, Dallas has as shitton of strip clubs and he’d be coddled.

July 26th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
They have a better roster than last year and almost every player they brought in has an expiring deal. The “gutted Mavericks” pieced together a competitive roster while still being in play for both Dwight AND another high-level FA. Rather impressive.

Dwight is a self-centered jerk who is a coward to boot. Having said that, if by any chance he decides to sign a long-term deal with the Hawks, I’d be the first in line to buy a season ticket.
July 26th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
This is just false. There’s no way the Mavs are worse then the 8th best team in the West. They had a solid off season.

Yeah, at this point, if I’m Orlando, I ship his ass out with Turkoglu’s bad contract, take on expiring deals and draft picks and just bottom out. If you can fleece a team desperate for a move out of some young talent, all the better. But this cannot continue or it’ll eat up this season like it ate up last season.

“Who the hell would want to live in Dallas? Or Houston for that matter?”
No income tax, great restaurants, tons of year round golf….wait, D-Ho ain’t a white guy. No idea, really. But only so many of these guys can be in Miami, LA, and New York.
The Rockets would be dumb to trade for him at anything close to what they were initially offering. If he won’t sign a long term deal as a part of the trade, I wouldn’t give up anything more than Kevin Martin. Otherwise, he ain’t worth it. He’s not the type of player that can single handedly bring you a championship like a LeBron or Durant. Fuk Dwight.

Fair enough. They are the 4th (Houston) and 9th (Dallas) biggest cities in the country. I’m guess I’m just a “one coast or the other, why be stuck in the middle” type.
July 26th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Make it stop? Well how about writing about this pretentious asshole? Dude, you are the guy pushing this non-story. I can’t imagine he brings THAT many page views. “Look! Dwight Howard said something! Pageviews! Profits! LULZ!” You are the one flooding the zone with these non-stories, and yet he is still plays for the Magic and he still has that shit-eating grin on his face.
July 26th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Who the hell would want to live in Dallas? Or Houston for that matter?
You’d be surprised.
Even though I grew up there, I can understand the knock against Houston. It takes at least 30 minutes to get anywhere of value, no matter where you live. It’s got all the heat of being in the south, all the humidity of being near the ocean, but none of the breeze. It’s very spread out. Possibly one of the least walkable cities in the entire country. It’s not for everyone.
Dallas is like Houston, but no oil refineries, not nearly as much humidity, but even more heat. But Dallas at least has zoning so that you don’t have a retirement home, next to a bar, next to a strip mall, next to a body shop. But Dallas is not an overly expensive city and if you can get past the fact that a lot of people here think they were born with a better pot to piss in than everyone else, then it’s a pretty cool place to live.

Definitely pricey there, but relative to other large cities? My wife and I live just across North Central Expressway from the Park Cities and we have a very reasonable mortgage.

True, NYC is hipster Mecca — where they all want to go. Austin though is the place they all settle because they can’t afford to live in NYC.

I think there needs to be some population studies — does NYC or Austin have more hipsters per capita?
July 26th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Link?
Howard got just as close as KD (at the same age), and with a lesser roster. He’s acted like a chump for the past year, but I think people have forgotten just how good this guy is.
July 26th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Rent for a nice place in Uptown, West Village and Deep Ellum is similar to what I experienced in San Francisco.
July 26th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
THIS!
OMG the annoying non-stop updates Howard is putting us all through!
He didn’t ask Orlando GM to come pay him a visit so he can repeat what everyone already knows. If you’re tired of Dwight then put your pen down and slowly walk away instead of writing about how you’re so so so so sick of writing about Howard. You are the problem not Dwight.
July 26th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
All of you clowns are wrong. The hipster capital of America is the Berkeley/San Fran area, and it isn’t even close.
July 26th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Offset by Antone’s, The Oasis, Zilker Park and about a hundred other great places to hang.
July 26th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Maybe Berkeley. One thing I like about the areas I lived in SF was the relative paucity of hipsters. On the other hand, the abundance of collar-poppin’ brahs was almost unbearable.
July 26th, 2012 at 11:57 AM

Just askin here – how are the Texas areas on the coast from Houston to C. Cristi? You never hear about them.
In what sense are you asking? Galveston is a fine beach community. You won’t confuse it for Los Angeles or Miami, but it’s very pleasant. They’ve really cleaned up the beaches quite a bit in the last 20 years. Going further down the coast you have more saltwater marshes, then near Corpus Christi, you have beaches again. They’re nice beaches, not huge, but also not overly crowded. Then once you get to Padre Island..well if you’ve seen Girls Gone Wild, you’ve seen the beaches at Padre.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
The most I hear about these areas comes from fishing magazines and blogs when you see pictures of GIGANTIC speckled trout.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Hey ms, got a question for you.
I’m moving to Dallas in two weeks with my fiance. We’re both lawyers, both will be working downtown (at least for the foreseeable future). Gonna live in an apartment near the AAC for a year, but will soon be house hunting. I would love to be near the Park Cities, as you are. Just wondering, if you don’t mind giving out numbers, what’s a “reasonable” mortgage like there?
July 26th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Rent for a nice place in Uptown, West Village and Deep Ellum is similar to what I experienced in San Francisco.
There’s your problem. Those are some the most expensive parts of town. You can find a nice place adjacent to those areas which are much more reasonable.
Deep Ellum has gotten quite cheap, mainly because a lot of bars and nightclubs have closed and moved to other parts of the city. Deep Ellum is not quite as lively as it used to be.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
By the way, even apartments in Uptown can be on the cheaper side compared to other cities. Got a buddy who’s moving to DC and they are getting a 2-bedroom apartment for around $2700 a month. We looked at several two-bedrooms in Uptown for much less than this, and ended up with a place on the outskirts of downtown for significantly less.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
DC is a creature unto itself. It’s like paying strip club prices for everything.

Cost of living in D.C. is out of control. My friend pays $900 a month for rent in a four-person townhouse at the edge of the Northwest-Northeast divide.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
If you don’t know about D.C., he lives not far from where it starts to get sketchy is what I meant in that last post.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
From SF, lived in NYC (Manhattan + BK), currently reside in DC and am (likely) moving to Austin soon.
Re: Hipsters, Austin seems to have a higher concentration of them, but they don’t seem to have the hipster obnoxiousness nearly as much as those in Brooklyn or SF. I would rate the hipster experience in NYC as MUCH worse than Austin, and slightly worse than SF.
SF’s annoyance is definitely coming more from collar-popping bros than anything else. City wasn’t like that when I was growing up, and now it’s almost insufferable. DC has that similar feel to it as well – very “Lax-ish.”
In terms of cost of living, it’s NY/SF (really just splitting hairs) and DC a little lower. Seeing costs in Austin it’s like a whole new fucking world.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
North or south of Florida Ave?
July 26th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
I don’t think this seems unreasonable, but that’s probably because I pay $2000 / month for a 1BR in Dupont Circle.
DC is overpriced, but it’s nothing like NYC or SF.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
Property taxes in NJ are so much worse than this, and I don’t even own yet, just rent.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
DC is close as far as housing costs (though you get more sq.ft.), but the rest (like groceries) is far cheaper in DC.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
I should say unreasonable with the qualification of “in the DC rental market”
July 26th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
I live Uptown because I can walk to work from my apartment. The higher prices are the trade-off for not wasting two hours a day sitting in traffic.
The Gables- or Marquis-type places Uptown start out about $1,200-plus for an effiency. Two BRs going for well over $2,000. I pay less, but I’m living small.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Hey ms, got a question for you.
I’m moving to Dallas in two weeks with my fiance. We’re both lawyers, both will be working downtown (at least for the foreseeable future). Gonna live in an apartment near the AAC for a year, but will soon be house hunting. I would love to be near the Park Cities, as you are. Just wondering, if you don’t mind giving out numbers, what’s a “reasonable” mortgage like there?
It will vary a bit. We are on the east side of 75, just south of Lovers Lane (right by Central Market). Newer condos around here start at $1,200/month and some are higher. We live in an older building (it was built in the 70s) so place is not quite as expensive as some of the newer ones. In this part of town, you’ll see a mixture of older condos and newer ones, so if you want to find a good value for the location, you certainly can.
Our combined mortgage/HOA is about $1,000/month. Our condo is on the second floor, has two covered parking spaces, and is about 1,300 sq. st. Our property value has gone up though since the initial purchase (my wife purchased the condo in 2006 before we even met), but it’s still relatively stagnant right now because there is a huge vacant lot across the street from us, in which development is supposed to start this fall. After the development is complete, I expect our property value–but also our taxes–to go up quite a bit. But that will make reselling this place an awfully pleasant experience, so we’re happy about it.
A friend of ours bought a condo three years ago about one block south of us. It was in a former apartment complex which had been converted to condos and given all new fixtures, floorplans, etc. He paid $120,000 which is quite a bit more than my wife paid for our place in 2006. I have two other friends who live in a house on the other side of Skillman. The house is not that much bigger in terms of sq. ft. than our condo and the neighborhood is older (1950s-60s construction). But the location is great and they paid I think around $280,000 or so (can’t recall the exact amount, but their mortgage is $2,500/month).
Is that helpful?
July 26th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Pretty much talking (and ahve only experienced) the rental markets.
I noticed this with Brooklyn vs. Manhattan as well – you don’t really end up paying too much less (if at all) you just get more space. And often less amenities and a shitty landlord to boot.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
I live Uptown because I can walk to work from my apartment. The higher prices are the trade-off for not wasting two hours a day sitting in traffic.
I live at Lovers and Greenville. My commute in the morning is less than 10 minutes by car and I don’t have to get on a single freeway.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Lots of development going on along NW Highway in that area. Including that big shiny new Wal-Mart!

July 26th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
I know several people who own around where I live/work and they pay $6-7k of property taxes on a house that is maybe worth $370k?
July 26th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Lots of development going on along NW Highway in that area. Including that big shiny new Wal-Mart!
Yes, but that’s several blocks north of us on the other side of The Village. So we’re safely insulated from that. But like I said, there’s about to be a lot of construction right across the street from us starting this fall. So we’ll have to deal with that for a year or so.
July 26th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
You know, if Dwight Howard is checking out TBL (and why wouldn’t he be?), all this talk of affordable housing just might tip him to the Mavs!

Why are teams still interested in this joke?
