Penn State Players’ Statement Already Showing Folly of NCAA Involvement
No one would fault players, who committed no crime, expressing pride and connection to their university, even though the greater significance to their statement is the 60 or so players that did not show up for it. Legacy seniors for 2012 are great. The more significant question is what happens to the freshmen and sophomores with three or four years of eligibility remaining.
The players are reacting naturally and in some sense admirably, though this sentiment supports the criticism of the NCAA getting involved initially and getting involved and not imposing a death penalty. The NCAA’s heavy-handed response took a story well beyond football and made it about football. Penn State’s story is no longer a story about horrifying crime, victims and corruption. This story will be about finding the “true Penn Staters.” It will be about suffering, endurance and rallying through an imposed crisis, rather than rebirth and sober reflection.
Intending to break down the prideful football culture that facilitated a callous act, the NCAA will only end up fortifying it.
As for transfers, Silas Redd is said to be considering joining USC’s national title run. Todd Graham thinks two Penn State linebackers should break a previous commitment in Pennsylvania to join him at Arizona State. Shocking. Penn State also just announced no players will be attending Big Ten media days. Previously, three players were set to attend. Coincidence?

you should do an entire AM Round Up with links to the posts from the previous day.
July 25th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Duffy still crushing it with coverage of this.
July 25th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Agree. I think they still average 95+ fans, even when they are getting their shit pushed in.
July 25th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
…yep. We’re still building the “Penn State football as underdog” narrative.
Give it a few years. We’re gonna get that TV movie yet.
July 25th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
So, as a alum, I’m not supposed to go the games?
July 25th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Well, they’re sure not lacking for “opportunities”….
July 25th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
2013. Look at their schedule. They could, even with a reduced roster, still be 5-0 heading into their game against Michigan. It would be a huge game.
July 25th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
I am not saying that. There are those that think interest will be lost.
/glares at spencer
July 25th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
I’ll be rooting for Penn State this year. Fuck the NCAA and Mark Emmert.
July 25th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
With your rooting interests already all over the map – why not?
July 25th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
With Michael Rappaport as Matt McGloin…all the Emmys
July 25th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
He roots for the indians. He likes failure
July 25th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
I’ll be rooting for them, but mostly because I’d enjoy getting TBL all up in arms.
July 25th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
That’s golden. +1 Butters
July 25th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
I almost want to watch every game just to see them get their asses whipped.
July 25th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
So how upset should I be if Virginia can’t beat Penn State this season?
July 25th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
WE ARE…
July 25th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Co-starring Neal McDonough as Robert Quarles as Mark Emmert

Intending to break down the prideful football culture that facilitated a callous act, the NCAA will only end up fortifying it.
Yes because america loves rooting for the school that hides and protects pedo’s.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
kinda an unfortunate figure of speech to use in this situation.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
should we be drawing our own conclusions about this?
July 25th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
I’m now VERY interested in the results from the UNC and Miami issues, particularly Miami’s with their “football culture”.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Uh, Duf, J-Mac would like to see you in his office…
/SHUT EM DOWN
July 25th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
Well said, Duffy.

July 25th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Didn’t UNC alsready come down?
I’d be more interested in what the NCAA will do with rapes and cover u-ps at Montana, which is they only thing I can think of as in the same universe as Penn State.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
I don’t know about this season, as most of our core group appears to be intact. Next year, after this year’s recruits bail, next year’s class dwindles to crap, and most of the core group graduate, then I’d be pissed about losing.
You have any plans to come up to State College for the game next year? I should be the UVa game this fall.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Great, great song by Public Enemy.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Is George Kennedy too old to play Sandusky?
July 25th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
If only the J-Macs of the world would get all riles up and start a media frenzy about this. What the fuck is taking so long?
July 25th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Him or Nick Nolte
July 25th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
There was never going to be a happy resolution to this situation. I’m surprised people keep looking for one.
And what I still don’t get is the PSU players and fans are mad at the NCAA but the school itself is part of the NCAA and signed off on every single thing Mark Emmert put on them. You can argue that the BOT and the people in charge had their arms twisted but, in the end, they paid for Freeh’s investigation and report and then agreed to take whatever medicine the NCAA gave.
Complaining about that now seems futile.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
Eh probably not. I may not be going to the game this season actually. I like college football but it can add up actually going to the games.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
Montana needs the same punishment as Penn State, though dialed back from 1-A to i-AA stadards, which would mean a $50 fine and 50 scholarships.
I might even be willing to throw Notre Dame asgetting close to a similar punsihment with their sexual assualt records and lack of investigations.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
The only fucking done in this whole situation was by Sandusky.
I’m going to keep repeating this, but the thing going in Miami’s favor is that once all this mess with Shaprio came out, the athletic department cooperated fully with the NCAA. That is a big bonus in all this. Covering up ends up being the most egregious offense. That is why you can’t compare what happened at USC to what will happen at Miami.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Nah. He’d do a good job. I love his work.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
I’m expecting beatdowns like on Waterboy when other teams start using towel boys and water boys trying to replicate the success of Bobby Boucher
July 25th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
That’ll do. That’ll do just fine.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Is it allowed that a head coach can bail from his contract with no penalty?
July 25th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
/Whole new meaning’d
July 25th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Great statements by the players though.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
One of the shameful things about this Penn State situation, and there are many, is that the media is completely focused on them when they should be focused on the shit that is still being uncovered at North Carolina. When all is said and done with that investigation, they could be looking at Death Penalty worthy offenses.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
That individualized. BOB’s (allegedly) has some really stiff buyout/exit clauses should he elect to leave on his own accord.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
yeah, but nobody gives a shit about UNC football.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Need to meet with Mike Leach and steal his offense, it’s only way a team of scrawny kids can compete. How about never punting? PSU is going to have to get creative.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
postscript...NERDS!!!
July 25th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Well at least he has no expectations on the field and there’s no way he’d get fired if he happened to be a bust.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Well at least he has no expectations on the field and there’s no way he’d get fired if he happened to be a bust.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
I don’t understand this sentiment at all. Of course there is fallout that isn’t directly related to the issue of child rape. You could also say “By firing Paterno, the BOT took a story well beyond personnel issues and made it about personnel issues.” Or “By covering the scandal so extensively, TBL took a story well beyond pageviews and made it about pageviews.”
Is the implication that all reaction must be directly related toward alleviating the issue of child abuse? That the collateral results aren’t worthy of attention? Because that’s how it comes across.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Seth Green or Carrot Top can play McQueary.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Well, Notre Dame got a free pass for this sort of thing, so there’s that.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
yeah, but nobody gives a shit about UNC football.
I don’t care whether or not people do, I care that the NCAA not forget that there is still a school being investigated which may have dramatically violated the most basic NCAA rules about student-athletes.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
.
I wanna see ‘em go to the veer, or maybe the wishbone (if they can come up with enough backs). Triple option is the way to go, baby.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
True. Wake me when UNC hoops gets busted.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
The A-11 offense and hire that inventor. Get weird with it, you are not going to get 4 yards and a cloud of dust anymore.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
Nolte. Vastly underrated actor and career.
All my life I’ve been taking shit from inferior people. No more!
July 25th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Also, it would be a nightmare for DCs to prepare for an offense that they’d only see once a year. They’re gonna need to do something to keep up now that they’re gonna be outmanned in the near future.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
FARMERS! du-du-dudu-dududu-duuuu
July 25th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Theres a chance you will get a wakeup call sooner rather than later
July 25th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
it’d be an absolute nightmare on offense.
any defensive coach worth his shit would be able to stop it incredibly easy, provided they had enough DB’s. it’s completely one-dimensional…two rushers with 9 db’s in a conservative tampa 2.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Recruit only Danny Woodheads and have your QB double as a power rusher (like Jared Lorenzen).
July 25th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
spencer, as much as I admire your clear-eyed vision, respectively in this case we diverge.
After watching USAFA up close for a number of years, one-off offenses can work in today’s D-1 environment. Precision & quickness are keys. You need consistent technique rather than sheer physical domination at the points of attack.
What kills the USAFAs of the world are a) their defenses are usually physically outsized – they get manhandled late in games; and b) such option offenses aren’t good for come-from-behind/two-minute drill scenarios.
What that kind of offense gives you is clock control. If you can play keepaway with a superior opponent, you can keep the game close & have a chance to win late.
And another thing:
Most teams, they may be pretty good at the nickel/dime level, but after about 6 – there may be some DBs you can attack.
July 25th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
a power rusher with no blockers and a bunch of defenders swarming?
/pours one out for the hefty lefty
July 25th, 2012 at 1:49 PM

Oh.
/frantically tries to figure out “what would Morey Amsterdam do?”
July 25th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
Drives me crazy when teams try to lateral their way to a last play touchdown and lineup with 5 fat asses. Take your 5 best open field runners and blockers stick them in the line.
July 25th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
“By covering the scandal so extensively, TBL took a story well beyond pageviews and made it about pageviews.”
I like this one.
July 25th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Because 8 months of pedo talk hasn’t been enough. The only people left who want to continue to make the story about that have an angle called pageviews. The rest of us want to talk about football.
