Illinois Coaches are on Penn State Campus to Recruit Players, Savor the Unusual Culture in Happy Valley
The culture of football at Penn State needed an overhaul. The loss of scholarships, bowl ban, and ability of players to transfer without sitting out ensures it will happen. The culture of college football in general? Oh, that’s just fine. Nothing to see here. This was a Penn State thing, and not a human being problem thing.
So, it’s good to see reports from ESPN where Penn State coach Bill O’Brien says he walked past six coaches with Illinois bags in his parking lot on the way to Bristol. Illinois has acknowledged that a group of coaches are on campus to recruit current Penn State players. According to O’Brien, some of his players have received up to 50 different scholarship offers from other schools.
It’s NFL style free agency at the college level. Cue a speech from Mark Emmert about the student athlete now to wipe our minds clean. Too bad that Penn State had such a bad football culture that they adopted a win at all costs mentality and the leadership ignored or minimized a horrific crime. Now enjoy the pickings, the rest of you. Need some depth or a player on that line? Team message boards pouring over speculation of who they can grab up? Depth chart updates so we know where we are when a player tragically dies? You better get to Happy Valley and savor the culture, coaches, before Illinois beats the rest of you. It’s different there than everywhere else.

-1 to the O’Brien and PSU students for not engaging in some Billy Batts stompdown on those people.
Poor form on the Illini. When you poach, best to do via aggressive text messaging or more cloack & dagger methods. Discretion is key.

Illinois should have just set up a folding table outside the football complex, armed with brochures and t-shirt giveaways. Like the Enterprise Management Training Program.
July 25th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
ron zook was there too…but only in support of jerry sandusky.
July 25th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Oh, so now people notice when a coach is on the campus who shouldn’t be there.

That’s ghetto, right there. On my property, poaching?

That North Carolina hillbilly on “Mountain Men” would know exactly how to handle these guys.

Boom, goes the dynamite.
This reminds me of when somebody gets evicted, their stuff is out on the curb, and others are “shopping” as they walk by.

the article notes they were clothed, with Illinois paraphernalia. Apples to oranges.
July 25th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Team message boards pouring over speculation of who they can grab up?
I thought the problem with grabbing up was really just at Penn State and that Montana school. Is it more prevalent than I’ve been lead to believe?

While the lack of discretion on the part of the Illinois coaches can be overlooked, Chief Illiniwek handing out logo blankets near the stadium was a bit much.

Applause.

That Illini coach looks like he just saw a woman naked for the first time.

Vlad, did that guy get to keep his land? Last one I saw, he and his buddy were stuck in traffic on their horses, late for court.

I feel awful for these PSU players who want to play somewhere with a chance to win without the stigma of Sandusky hot on their trails and only have to walk into their parking lot to find a school willing to pay for their education to do so. Just awful.

Illinois isn’t the only one…
“Asked if he had glanced at the Penn State roster, Weis answered with a single word: Yes.”
Matt Tait, writer, KUSports.com
“First of all, you have to be respectful to (PSU) coach (Bill) O’Brien and the people who are trying to make good of a bad situation. But, at the same time, the rules are the rules. When the dust settles, I think there will be several players that entertain the thought of going somewhere else, especially the way it was presented to them. So I think that any program that didn’t do homework prior to this decision coming out was behind on that one.”

“These kids don’t want to leave Penn State,” O’Brien said. “They want to play for Penn State. It is my opinion these coaches should leave them alone, but if they don’t want to leave them alone, they should make sure they give me a call before they try to recruit them.”
Love the irony of a Penn State coach telling people to “leave the kids alone”.

I can have no problem with players making a choice to go elsewhere and still point out hypocrisy about the culture of football and win at all cost mentality that manifests itself in a variety of ways.

*Only applies to young boys

The Illinois coaches were just on campus to help us reduce our football culture and embrace mediocrity.

Liar! Penn State has no blue chip recruits.
July 25th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Win at all costs? They aren’t pumping steroids into their players. They aren’t paying for these guys (no Cam jokes, please). They aren’t cheating. Illinois isn’t hiding the fact that one of their coaches is a repeat sex offender. Is it in bad taste? Sure. I’d hate to see Auburn coaches doing the same. But as far as desperate coaches potentially making a positive influence on a kid, I don’t think that’s an example of the college football “culture” problem that everyone is talking about that no one can seem to adequately define.

Well like the old saying goes “if your school’s ex defensive coordinator didn’t rape anyone, you are free to poach players from the one that did”

In college, I defeated a member of the women’s golf team from the back tees. Great day in the life.

Who posted that infernal racket from the ESPN coverage of PSU-tOSU ’08 the other day? I’ve developed a Pavlovian response where every time Penn State comes up that song pops into my head.

A very touchy subject on the Penn State campus
July 25th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Good post, the hypocrisy of Emmert and the NCAA can’t be more obvious.
Fuck Illinois, went to a game there a few years ago and there were more PSU people tailgating than Illini. Weakest crowd/stadium I’ve ever seen, pitiful.
July 25th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Awesomeness ensues! I used to work at a summer camp where we would have cabin cookouts once a week, and you would get the supplies beforehand and it always included a bunch of apples. Well, needless to say the age group I had was about as interested in apples as a ddmcd would be in watching bert and ernie re-runs, so we always had a bunch of apples left over. Well, all of the cabins in our camp (16) would compile our apples that night take them out behind one of the cabins on the river and whack the shit out of them with old wooden clubs. The next morning it looked like an apple delivery truck exploded behind the cabin and in the river.
July 25th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Well like the old saying goes “if your school’s ex defensive coordinator didn’t rape anyone, you are free to poach players from the one that did”
The origins of this saying date back to the Oliver Cromwell years, I believe.

Do you think this is bad form or shocking Lisk? Season starts in less than 2 months and PSU is a public campus. Not like they could put snipers up around Beaver Stadium to keep people out. 30 for 30 had some clips of the same thing after SMU got bodied by the NCAA.
I was actually expecting something akin freshman year when you had all the clubs and organizations lined up the first week of school in the quad trying to convince you that to join up, but with middle aged men in kahkis and 20 year old “fax girls” chatting up the

to all of you bitching about this, it was just on Chicago radio that the Illinois AD had been in contact with the PSU AD about the coaches intentions and the fact that they are seeing players they had recruited before. Evidently, O’Brien has been ignoring all contact from other coaches including phone calls, text messages and emails. Way to show you have your players’ best interests at heart O’Brien

The culture of Penn State didn’t need an overhaul. The entire college athletics culture needs an overhaul. NCAA sux ass. Illinois sux just as bad
