Nolan Ryan vs. Josh Hamilton: As Contract Showdown Looms, Rangers President Says Hamilton Gives Away At-Bats
Josh Hamilton is going through a slump in July. At the end of May, he was hitting .368, getting on base 42% of the time, and slugging .764. He led the league with 21 home runs. Since then, he has hit only seven. So far this month, he is getting on base at a .238 clip, and only slugging .345 (Dayton Moore perks up his ears).
So, it is true that Josh Hamilton has been having an off month. No one is going to continue the hot stretch that he had in May, but the Rangers would probably like somewhere in between. It’s too bad he wasn’t a free agent then, everyone was willing to give him all the money he wanted, and wanted him to star in movies about his life. The Rangers even opened negotiations that had been shut down in the offseason.
Enter Nolan Ryan, the Rangers president and CEO, and baseball Hall of Famer. Speaking on 103.3, he had this to say:
I think we’re all seeing the same thing. You’re right that some of his at bats aren’t very impressive from the standpoint that he doesn’t work deep into the count, he’s swinging at a lot of bad pitches, he just doesn’t seem to be locked in at all. So what you’re hoping is that his approach will change and he’ll start giving quality at bats because there’s a lot of those at bats that he just gives away. One of the things I’ve always commented on is I can’t ever say that I ever saw Henry [Hank] Aaron give an at bat away.
Hamilton’s struggling, but these seem like posturing. You hear that, Josh? You are no Hank Aaron, he never gave away at bats like you are doing almost every time up lately. Let’s set aside the ridiculousness of the statement and chalk it up to Nolan walking to school up hill both ways in the snow. How many Hank Aaron at bats did Ryan really see? They played in the same league, but on different teams, for four years early in Nolan’s career, and then for two late in Aaron’s career when he joined the Brewers.
The Rangers are probably hoping that the rest of the league now overreacts to the slump just as everyone declared him the best player two months ago. But just in case they want to think before they give him 150 million or so, Nolan Ryan wants everyone to know that he gives away at-bats, something the greats never ever do.

I’m actually inclined to agree with Nolan on this. I watched the Rangers-Angels game on Sunday, and he was swinging at every first pitch (he leads the league in this stat), and was having an awful time with sliders and pitches that broke at least four inches horizontally. Pitchers are exploiting his aggresiveness on 0-0 counts and throwing a variety of sliders and cutters.

I don’t have an issue with what Ryan said. I think sometimes Hamilton gets a free pass because we all admire what he’s overcome. I hope he realizes Texas is the best place for him.

Hamilton leads the league in swinging at pitches out of the strike zone.

He didn’t even say he isn’t Mays. Just that he isn’t Mays… yet. But somehow I’m the asshole for insulting ESPN/writers.

josh hamilton orioles.
Lisk… you are no Hernia.

Pretty sure it was Joe Nathan before so even though history will view you as a fool since that comment can never be undone there are some who will know the truth
Since Nolan Ryan is almost 1,000 walks ahead of #2 on the all-time list it’s possible he gave away plenty of at-bats too so the man knows what he’s talking about

hank aaron is no pete rose when it comes to not giving ABs away.

I wish I was smart enough to figure out if you could break that down my month. I would bet, that Pujols was high up in that list during his slow start. He’s been fine since. Baseball is streaky.

It’s all a big misunderstanding. Nolan said that in honor of Josh Hamilton the Rangers are giving away phat tats.
July 24th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Thanks! That gives me a false sense of pride, thinking I know what I’m talking about every once in awhile.
July 24th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Aaron took speed back in his playing days (along with tons of other major league players) so maybe he can hook Hamilton up.

Nolan Ryan. Not the boss. Jon Daniels. The boss. This quote means a lot less than most people seen to think.

Chuck Greenberg was a co-owner and partner of Nolan Ryan when they bought the Rangers. Now he’s not. Don’t fuck with Nolan.

I have no problem with what Ryan said. I don’t see it as posturing.

Ah shit. Forgot he was “principal owner” now. You’re right, though I still think people assume he makes or deserves credit for the work that falls under Daniels
July 24th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
When has calling out a player in the media ever worked?
July 24th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
whenever someone else holds the power to fire you, you are not the boss.
July 24th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
But seriously… how freaking good is Mike Trout. Will any jackass writers not vote for him for MVP solely because he’s a rookie?
July 24th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
Huh?
/Bobby Valentine
He spent the Spring passive-aggressively calling out Daniel Bard telling him what pitches to throw, through the media. God that pissed me off.

Are there still old men in the BBWA? Then yes.

Can we have this conversation in two months? Still a bit premature, I think.

What the fuck. The tigers swapped a 2nd for a 1s draft pick in the trade yesterday. Did I just miss this? That Tigers get a competitive balance draft pick in the first place is just weird.

clearly sir, you don’t recall Jeremy Lin’s MVP performance during this past NBA season.
July 24th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
See I waited as long as possible to think about it. A month ago he had missed a greater %age of the season. He’s at the point where you can say “if the season ended today…”, simply because his stats are so much better, and his counting stats actually hold up pretty well now. He’s qualified for the batting title. It always will come down to health/no slumps, but I don’t see how he isn’t the front-runner, even if season ended Aug 1.

Bit of breaking news here: Mark Trout just read WWoS’s fulsome praise and then took a step and tore his ACL.
July 24th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Who is Mark Trout?

He sells homes in Kennewick. http://www.marktrout.com/ Or he did, until a tragic knee injury.

I laughed at this (for two reasons), then momentarily panicked and pulled up Twitter and the Angels website as fast I could.

Mark Trout is Mike Trout’s evil twin. He exists to scare Angel’s fans and fantasy owners.

I can’t not say that I don’t negate this not statement.
July 24th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
The original picture was Joe Nathan. It was marked as Josh Hamilton by the photo service, so it came up on my search for a photo of Josh Hamilton. I thought it looked a little off but figured it was the expression on the face. I would have noticed if it was Michael Young or Ron Washington, but Nathan looked close enough.

July 24th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
Nolan is right. Josh chases pitches down & away and never lays off the first pitch.
If a pitcher has reasonable control, Hamilton is a high percentage strikeout right now. He needs to get his head right and fast.
